1 En ce jour-là, on lut dans le livre de Moïse, tout le peuple l’entendant ; et on y trouva écrit que l’Ammonite et le Moabite ne devaient pas entrer dans la congrégation de Dieu, à jamais ;

 1 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;

2 Parce qu’ils n’étaient pas venus à la rencontre des enfants d’Israël avec du pain et de l’eau, mais qu’ils avaient soudoyé Balaam contre eux, pour qu’il les maudisse ; néanmoins notre Dieu changea la malédiction en une bénédiction.

 2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

3 Et il arriva, lorsqu’ils eurent entendu la loi, qu'ils séparèrent d’Israël toute la multitude mixte.

 3 Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

4 ¶ Et avant cela, Eliashib, le prêtre, étant préposé sur les chambres de la maison de notre Dieu, était allié à Tobiah (Tobija) ;

 4 ¶ And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah:

5 Et il lui avait préparé une grande chambre, où auparavant on plaçait les offrandes de farine, l’encens, et les ustensiles, et les dîmes du grain, le vin nouveau et l’huile, ce qui était ordonné à être donné aux Lévites, et aux chanteurs et aux portiers, ainsi que les offrandes des prêtres.

 5 And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.

6 Mais pendant tout ce temps-là je n’étais pas à Jérusalem ; car en la trente-deuxième année d’Artaxerxes, le roi de Babylone, j’étais allé vers le roi ; et au bout de quelque temps j’obtins congé du roi.

 6 But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:

7 Et je vins à Jérusalem, et je compris le mal qu’Eliashib avait fait à Tobiah, en lui préparant une chambre dans les cours de la maison de Dieu.

 7 And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

8 Et cela me chagrina beaucoup donc je jetai toutes les choses de la maison de Tobiah (Tobija,) hors de la chambre.

 8 And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.

9 Puis on nettoya les chambres selon que je l’avais commandé ; et j’y fis rapporter les ustensiles de la maison de Dieu, ainsi que l’offrande de farine et l’encens.

 9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

10 ¶ Et je discernai que les portions des Lévites ne leur avaient pas été données, car les Lévites et les chanteurs, qui faisaient le service, s’étaient enfuis, chacun vers son champ.

 10 ¶ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.

11 Et je contestai avec les dirigeants, et je dis : Pourquoi la maison de Dieu est-elle abandonnée ? Et je les rassemblai, et les rétablis à leur place.

 11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

12 Puis tout Judah apporta la dîme du grain, et du vin nouveau et de l’huile, dans les greniers.

 12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

13 Et j’établis des trésoriers sur les greniers Shelemiah, le prêtre, Zadok (Tsadok), le scribe, et d’entre les Lévites, Pedaiah ; et à côté d’eux il y avait Hanan, le fils de Zaccur, fils de Mattaniah, parce qu’ils étaient réputés fidèles, et leur charge était de faire les répartitions à leurs frères.

 13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.

14 Souviens-toi de moi, ô mon Dieu, concernant ceci, et n’efface pas mes bonnes actions que j’ai faites à l’égard de la maison de mon Dieu et envers ses fonctions.

 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.

15 ¶ En ces jours-là, je vis en Judah quelques-uns foulant aux pressoirs le jour du shabbat, et rentrant des gerbes, et chargeant les ânes, et aussi du vin, des raisins, et des figues et toutes sortes de fardeaux, qu’ils apportaient à Jérusalem le jour du shabbat et je témoignai contre eux le jour où ils vendaient leurs vivres.

 15 ¶ In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

16 Aussi des hommes de Tyre (Tyr) demeuraient à Jérusalem, lesquels apportaient du poisson et toutes sortes de marchandises ; et ils les vendaient aux enfants de Judah à Jérusalem le jour du shabbat.

 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

17 Puis je contestai avec les notables de Judah, et leur dis : Qu’est-ce que cette mauvaise chose que vous faites, de profaner le jour du shabbat ?

 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

18 Vos pères n’ont-ils pas ainsi fait, et notre Dieu n’a-t-il pas fait venir tout ce mal sur nous et sur cette ville ? Néanmoins vous apportez plus de colère contre Israël, en profanant le shabbat.

 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

19 Et il arriva que, lorsque les portes de Jérusalem commencèrent à être dans l’obscurité, avant le shabbat, je commandai que les portes soient fermées et j’ordonnai qu’elles ne soient pas ouvertes jusqu’après le shabbat ; et je plaçai quelques-uns de mes serviteurs aux portes, afin qu’aucun fardeau n’entre le jour du shabbat.

 19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

20 Et les marchands, et ceux qui vendaient toutes sortes de marchandises passèrent la nuit hors de Jérusalem une fois ou deux.

 20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

21 Puis je témoignai contre eux, et leur dis : Pourquoi passez-vous la nuit devant la muraille ? Si vous faites cela de nouveau, je mettrai la main sur vous. À partir de ce temps-là, ils ne vinrent plus le jour du shabbat.

 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.

22 Et je commandai aux Lévites qu’ils devaient se purifier et qu’ils devaient venir garder les portes pour sanctifier le jour du shabbat. Souviens-toi de moi, ô mon Dieu, concernant ceci aussi, et épargne-moi selon la grandeur de ta miséricorde.

 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

23 ¶ En ces jours-là aussi je vis des Juifs qui avaient pris des femmes d’Ashdod, d’Ammon et de Moab.

 23 ¶ In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

24 Et leurs enfants parlaient à moitié le dialecte d’Ashdod. et ne savaient pas parler la langue des Juifs, mais selon la langue de chaque peuple.

 24 And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

25 Et je contestai avec eux et je les maudis, et j’en frappai certains d’entre eux, je leur arrachai les cheveux, et je les fis jurer par le nom de Dieu, en disant : Vous ne donnerez pas vos filles à leurs fils, et vous ne prendrez pas de leurs filles pour vos fils, ni pour vous-mêmes.

 25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

26 Salomon, roi d’Israël n’a-t-il pas péché en ces choses ? Quoique entre beaucoup de nations il n’y avait pas de roi comme lui ; il était bien-aimé de son Dieu, et Dieu l’avait fait roi sur tout Israël ; toutefois même lui, les femmes étrangères le firent pécher.

 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

27 V ous écouterions-nous donc pour faire tout ce grand mal, pour transgresser contre notre Dieu en nous mariant à des femmes étrangères ?

 27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

28 Et l’un des fils de Joiada, le fils d’Eliashib, le grand-prêtre, était gendre de Sanballat, le Horonite ; c’est pourquoi je le chassai d’auprès de moi.

 28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

29 Souviens-toi d’eux, ô mon Dieu, car ils ont souillé la prêtrise, ainsi que l’alliance de la prêtrise et des Lévites.

 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

30 Et je les purifiai de tous les étrangers, et je désignai les charges des prêtres et des Lévites, chacun selon son office,

 30 Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;

31 Et pour l’offrande de bois aux époques fixées, ainsi que pour les prémices. Souviens-toi de moi en bien, ô mon Dieu.

 31 And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
