1 Et il arriva, après cela qu’Absalom, le fils de David, avait une sœur belle, dont le nom était Tamar ; et Amnon le fils de David, l’aima.

 1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

2 Et Amnon était si tourmenté jusqu’à en tomber malade, à cause de sa sœur, Tamar ; car elle était vierge, et il semblait trop difficile à Amnon de lui faire quoi que ce soit.

 2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her.

3 Mais Amnon avait un ami, dont le nom était Jonadab, le fils de Shimeah, frère de David ; et Jonadab était un homme très sournois.

 3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man.

4 Et il lui dit : Pourquoi, toi, étant fils du roi, dépéris-tu ainsi de jour en jour ? Ne me le déclareras-tu pas ? Et Amnon lui dit : J’aime Tamar, la sœur de mon frère Absalom.

 4 And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.

5 Et Jonadab lui dit : Couche-toi sur ton lit, et fais le malade ; et quand ton père viendra te voir, tu lui diras Je te prie, que ma sœur Tamar vienne, et qu’elle me donne à manger, qu’elle prépare un mets devant moi afin que je le voie, et que je le mange de sa main.

 5 And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.

6 ¶ Amnon se coucha donc et fit le malade ; et quand le roi vint le voir, Amnon dit au roi : Je te prie, que ma sœur Tamar vienne et me fasse deux gâteaux devant moi, afin que je puisse manger de sa main.

 6 ¶ So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.

7 Et David envoya vers Tamar à la maison, disant : Va dans la maison de ton frère, Amnon, et prépare-lui un mets.

 7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house, and dress him meat.

8 Et Tamar alla dans la maison de son frère Amnon, et il était couché. Et elle prit de la pâte, et la pétrit, et en fit devant lui des gâteaux, et fit cuire les gâteaux.

 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.

9 Et elle prit la poêle et les versa devant lui ; mais il refusa de manger. Et Amnon dit : Retirez tout homme d’auprès de moi. Et chaque homme se retira d’auprès de lui.

 9 And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.

10 Et Amnon dit à Tamar : Apporte le mets dans la chambre, afin que je puisse manger de ta main. Et Tamar prit les gâteaux qu’elle avait faits, et les apporta à Amnon, son frère, dans la chambre.

 10 And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.

11 Et quand elle les lui apporta à manger, il la saisit et lui dit : Viens, couche avec moi, ma sœur.

 11 And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.

12 Et elle lui répondit : Non, mon frère, ne me force pas, car on ne fait pas ainsi en Israël ; ne fais pas cette folie.

 12 And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.

13 Et moi, où ferais-je aller ma honte ? Et quant à toi, tu serais comme l’un des insensés en Israël. Maintenant donc je te prie, parle au roi, car il ne me refusera pas à toi.

 13 And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.

14 Néanmoins il ne voulut pas écouter sa voix, mais étant plus fort qu’elle, il la viola et coucha avec elle.

 14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.

15 ¶ Puis Amnon la haït énormément, en sorte que la haine dont il la haïssait était plus grande que l’amour dont il l’avait aimée. Et Amnon lui dit : Lève-toi, va-t’en.

 15 ¶ Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.

16 Et elle lui dit : Il n’y a pas de raison ; ce mal de me chasser est plus grand que l’autre que tu m’as fait. Mais il ne voulut pas l’écouter.

 16 And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.

17 Puis il appela son serviteur qui le servait, et dit : Mettez dehors cette femme d’auprès de moi, et verrouille la porte après elle.

 17 Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.

18 Et elle avait une robe de diverses couleurs, car les filles du roi qui étaient vierges étaient habillées de telles robes. Puis son serviteur la mit dehors, et verrouilla la porte après elle.

 18 And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.

19 ¶ Et Tamar mit de la cendre sur sa tête, et déchira sa robe de diverses couleurs qu’elle avait sur elle, et elle mit la main sur sa tête, et s’en alla en pleurant.

 19 ¶ And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying.

20 Et Absalom, son frère lui dit : Est-ce qu’Amnon, ton frère, a été avec toi ? Mais maintenant ma sœur, tais-toi, il est ton frère ; ne t’en inquiète pas. Ainsi Tamar demeura désolée dans la maison d’Absalom, son frère.

 20 And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.

21 ¶ Mais quand le roi David entendit parler de toutes ces choses, il en fut très irrité.

 21 ¶ But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.

22 Et Absalom ne parlait à Amnon ni en bien ni en mal ; car Absalom haïssait Amnon, parce qu’il avait violé sa sœur Tamar.

 22 And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

23 ¶ Et il arriva, après deux années entières, qu’Absalom avait les tondeurs à Baalhazor, qui est près d’Ephraim (Éphraïm), et Absalom invita tous les fils du roi.

 23 ¶ And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baalhazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king’s sons.

24 Et Absalom vint vers le roi, et dit : Voici maintenant ton serviteur a les tondeurs je te prie, que le roi et ses serviteurs aillent avec ton serviteur.

 24 And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant.

25 Et le roi dit à Absalom : Non, mon fils, non ; nous n’irons pas tous, de peur que nous ne te soyons à charge. Et il le pressa, cependant il ne voulut pas aller ; et il le bénit.

 25 And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.

26 Alors Absalom dit : Si tu ne viens pas, je te prie, que mon frère Amnon vienne avec nous. Et le roi lui répondit : Pourquoi irait-il avec toi ?

 26 Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?

27 Mais Absalom le pressa tant, qu’il laissa aller Amnon, et tous les fils du roi avec lui.

 27 But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.

28 ¶ Or Absalom avait commandé à ses serviteurs, disant : Faites attention, quand le cœur d’Amnon sera égayé par le vin, et que je vous dirai : Frappez Amnon, alors tuez-le, ne craignez pas ; ne vous ai-je pas commandé ? Soyez courageux et soyez vaillants.

 28 ¶ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

29 Et les serviteurs d’Absalom firent à Amnon comme Absalom l’avait commandé. Puis tous les fils du roi se levèrent, et montèrent chacun sur sa mule, et s’enfuirent.

 29 And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.

30 ¶ Et il arriva, comme ils étaient en chemin, que la nouvelle vint à David, disant : Absalom a tué tous les fils du roi, et il n’en reste pas un seul.

 30 ¶ And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left.

31 Alors le roi se leva et déchira ses vêtements, et se coucha par terre ; et tous ses serviteurs aussi se tenaient là avec leurs vêtements déchirés.

 31 Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.

32 Et Jonadab, le fils de Shimeah, frère de David, répondit et dit : Que mon seigneur ne pense pas qu’on a tué tous les jeunes hommes, les fils du roi ; car Amnon seul est mort ; car Absalom s’était proposé à exécuter depuis le jour où il viola sa sœur Tamar.

 32 And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.

33 Maintenant donc, que mon seigneur, le roi ne prenne pas la chose à cœur, en pensant que tous les fils du roi sont morts ; car Amnon seul est mort.

 33 Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead.

34 Mais Absalom s’enfuit. Et le jeune homme qui était en sentinelle leva les yeux et regarda, et voici, un grand peuple venait par le chemin derrière lui, du côté de la montagne.

 34 But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.

35 Et Jonadab dit au roi : Voici les fils du roi qui viennent ; comme ton serviteur a dit, ainsi cela arrive.

 35 And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king’s sons come: as thy servant said, so it is.

36 Et il arriva, aussitôt qu’il achevait de parler, voici, on vit arriver les fils du roi, et ils élevèrent la voix et pleurèrent ; et le roi aussi et tous ses serviteurs pleurèrent beaucoup.

 36 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.

37 ¶ Mais Absalom s’enfuit, et alla chez Talmai, le fils d’Ammihud, roi de Geshur (Gueshur). Et David menait deuil tous les jours sur son fils.

 37 ¶ But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.

38 Ainsi Absalom s’enfuit, et alla à Geshur (Gueshur), et y resta trois ans ;

 38 So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

39 Et l’âme du roi David languissait d’aller vers Absalom, car il était consolé concernant Amnon, de ce qu’il était mort.

 39 And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
