1 De plus Ahithophel dit à Absalom : Laisse-moi maintenant choisir douze mille hommes, et je me lèverai, et je poursuivrai David cette nuit.

 1 Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:

2 Et je viendrai sur lui pendant qu’il est fatigué et que ses mains sont affaiblies, et je le rendrai craintif ; et tout le peuple qui est avec lui s’enfuira, et je frapperai seulement le roi.

 2 And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only:

3 Et je ferai revenir à toi tout le peuple ; l’homme que tu cherches est comme si tous retournaient ; ainsi tout le peuple sera en paix.

 3 And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.

4 Et le propos plut bien à Absalom et à tous les anciens d’Israël.

 4 And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

5 Et Absalom dit : Appelle maintenant aussi Hushai, l’Archite, et nous entendrons ce qu’il dira, lui aussi.

 5 Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.

6 Et quand Hushai vint vers Absalom, Absalom lui parla, disant : Ahithophel a parlé de cette manière ; ferons-nous selon son propos ? Sinon, parle, toi.

6 And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou.

7 Et Hushai dit à Absalom : Le conseil qu’Ahithophel a donné cette fois, n’est pas bon.

 7 And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.

8 Car, dit Hushai, tu connais ton père et ses hommes, qu’ils sont des hommes puissants, et qu’ils ont le cerveau irrité, comme une ourse dans les champs à qui on a pris ses petits ; et ton père est un homme de guerre, et il ne passera pas la nuit avec le peuple.

 8 For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

9 Voici, il est maintenant caché dans quelque fosse ou dans quelque autre lieu. Et il arrivera lorsque quelques-uns d’entre eux seront battus au commencement, que quiconque l’entendra, dira : Il y a un carnage parmi le peuple qui suit Absalom.

 9 Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.

10 Et celui-là même qui est vaillant, dont le cœur est comme le cœur d’un lion, se fondra complètement ; car tout Israël sait que ton père est un homme puissant, et que ceux qui sont avec lui sont des hommes vaillants.

 10 And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.

11 C’est pourquoi je conseille que tout Israël soit rassemblé vers toi, depuis Dan jusqu’à Beersheba, nombreux comme le sable qui est le long de la mer, et que toi-même en personne, tu ailles en bataille.

 11 Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

12 Alors nous viendrons sur lui au lieu où il se trouvera, et nous tomberons sur lui comme la rosée tombe sur le sol ; et de lui et de tous les hommes qui sont avec lui, il n’en restera pas un seul.

 12 So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.

13 De plus, s’il s’est retiré dans une ville, alors tout Israël apportera des cordes vers cette ville-là, et nous la traînerons dans la rivière, jusqu’à ce qu’il ne s’en trouve pas même une petite pierre.

 13 Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.

14 Et Absalom et tous les hommes d’Israël dirent : Le conseil de Hushai, l’Archite, est meilleur que le conseil d’Ahithophel. Car le SEIGNEUR avait décrété de faire échouer le bon conseil d’Ahithophel, afin que le SEIGNEUR fasse venir le mal sur Absalom.

 14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

15 ¶ Alors Hushai dit à Zadok (Tsadok) et Abiathar, les prêtres : Ahithophel a conseillé ainsi et ainsi à Absalom et aux anciens d’Israël ; et moi j’ai conseillé ainsi et ainsi.

 15 ¶ Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

16 Maintenant donc envoyez promptement, dire à David, en disant : Ne passe pas cette nuit dans les plaines du désert, mais traverse rapidement de peur que le roi ne soit englouti et tout le peuple qui est avec lui.

 16 Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.

17 Or Jonathan et Ahimaaz se tenaient près de Enrogel, car ils ne pouvaient se montrer entrant dans la ville, et une servante vint les avertir, et ils allèrent le rapporter au roi David.

 17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by Enrogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.

18 Néanmoins un jeune garçon les vit, et le rapporta à Absalom ; mais ils s’en allèrent tous deux rapidement, et arrivèrent à la maison d’un homme, à Bahurim, qui avait dans sa cour un puits, où ils descendirent.

 18 Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; whither they went down.

19 Et la femme prit une couverture, et l’étendit sur l’ouverture du puits, et y répandit du grain pilé, et la chose ne fut pas connue.

 19 And the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth, and spread ground corn thereon; and the thing was not known.

20 Et quand les serviteurs d’Absalom vinrent vers la femme, dans la maison, ils dirent : Où sont Ahimaaz et Jonathan ? Et la femme leur dit : Ils ont passé le gué de l’eau. Et après les avoir cherchés, et ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.

 20 And when Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

21 Et il arriva, après leur départ, ils remontèrent du puits, et s’en allèrent, et rapportèrent au roi David, et dire : Levez-vous, et passez l’eau rapidement, car Ahithophel a conseillé contre vous.

 21 And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.

22 Alors David se leva, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, et ils passèrent le Jourdain ; et à la lumière du matin il n’en manqua pas un qui n’ait passé le Jourdain.

 22 Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan.

23 ¶Et quand Ahithophel, vit qu’on n’avait pas suivi son conseil, il sella son âne, se leva et s’en alla en sa maison, dans sa ville ; et mit ordre à sa maison, et il se pendit : et mourut ; et il fut enterré dans le sépulcre de son père.

 23 ¶ And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

24 Alors David arriva à Mahanaim. Et Absalom passa le Jourdain, lui et tous les hommes d’Israël avec lui.

 24 Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

25 ¶ Et Absalom établit Amasa capitaine de l’armée, à la place de Joab. Amasa était fils d’un homme dont le nom était Jithra, un Israélite, qui était allé vers Abigail, la fille de Nahash, sœur de Zeruiah, mère de Joab.

 25 ¶ And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man’s son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab’s mother.

26 Et Israël et Absalom campèrent au pays de Gilead (Guilead).

 26 So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.

27 ¶ Et il arriva, lorsque David arriva à Mahanaim, que Shobi, le fils de Nahash, de Rabbah des enfants d’Ammon, et Machir (Makir), le fils d’Ammiel de Lodebar, et Barzillai, le Gileadite, de Rogelim,

 27 ¶ And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

28 Apportèrent des lits, des bassins, des ustensiles en terre, du blé, de l’orge, de la farine, et du grain grillé, des fèves, des lentilles, et des plantes grillées,

 28 Brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentiles, and parched pulse,

29 Et du miel, du beurre, des moutons, et des fromages de vache, pour David et pour le peuple qui était avec lui, pour qu’ils mangent ; car ils disaient : Le peuple est affamé, et fatigué, et il a soif dans le désert.

 29 And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
