1 Hommes, frères et pères, entendez ma défense que je fais maintenant envers vous.

 1 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

2 (Et quand ils entendirent qu’il leur parlait dans la langue hébraïque, ils firent encore plus silence: et il dit):

 2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

3 Je suis véritablement un homme qui est un Juif, né à Tarse, une ville en Cilicie, élevé cependant dans cette ville aux pieds de Gamaliel, et instruit selon la manière parfaite de la loi des pères, et j’étais zélé envers Dieu, comme vous l’êtes tous aujourd’hui.

 3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

4 Et j’ai persécuté ce chemin jusqu’à la mort, liant et jetant en prison hommes et femmes.

 4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 Comme aussi le grand prêtre m’en est témoin, et toute la classe des anciens: de qui j’ai aussi reçu des lettres adressées aux frères, et j’allais à Damas, pour amener à Jérusalem, ceux qui étaient liés, pour être punis.

 5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

6 Et il arriva, comme je marchais, et étais arrivé près de Damas vers midi, qu’une grande lumière soudainement brilla du ciel tout autour de moi.

 6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

7 Et je tombai au sol, et j’entendis une voix me disant: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?

 7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

8 Et je répondis: Qui es-tu, Seigneur? Et il me dit: Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.

 8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

9 Et ceux qui étaient avec moi virent en effet la lumière, et eurent peur; mais ils n’entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.

 9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

10 Et je dis, Que ferai-je, Seigneur? Et le Seigneur me dit, Lève-toi, et va à Damas; et là, on te dira toutes les choses qui te sont ordonnées de faire.

 10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

11 Et lorsque je ne pouvais pas voir à cause de la gloire de cette lumière, j’entrai à Damas, étant conduit par la main de ceux qui étaient avec moi.

 11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

12 Et un Ananias, un homme dévot selon la loi, ayant une bonne réputation auprès de tous les Juifs qui demeuraient là,

 12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

13 Vint vers moi, et se tint debout et me dit: Frère Saul, reçois ta vue. Et à l’heure même je levai les yeux sur lui.

 13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

14 Et il dit, Le Dieu de nos pères t’a choisi, pour que tu connaisses sa volonté, et voies ce Seul Juste, et que tu entendes la voix de sa bouche.

 14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

15 Car tu seras son témoin envers tous les hommes, de ce que tu as vu et entendu.

 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

16 Et maintenant pourquoi tardes-tu? Lève-toi, et sois baptisé, et nettoyé de tes péchés, faisant appel au nom du Seigneur.

 16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

17 Et il arriva, lorsque je fus venu de nouveau à Jérusalem, pendant que je priais dans le temple, je fus en extase;

 17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

18 Et je le vis, me disant: Hâte-toi, et sors rapidement de Jérusalem: car ils ne recevront pas ton témoignage me concernant.

 18 And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

19 Et je dis, Seigneur, ils savent que j’emprisonnais et battais dans chaque synagogue ceux qui croyaient en toi:

 19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

20 Et lorsque le sang de ton martyr Étienne fut versé, moi aussi je me tenais là, et consentais à sa mort, et gardais l’habillement de ceux qui le tuaient.

 20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

21 Et il me dit, Pars: car je t’enverrai loin d’ici vers les Gentils.

 21 And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

22 Et ils l’écoutèrent jusqu’à ce mot, et alors ils élevèrent leurs voix, et dirent: Retire de la terre un tel individu: car il n'est pas propice qu'il vive.

 22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 Et comme ils s’écriaient, et jetaient leurs effets, et lançaient la poussière en l’air,

 23 And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,

24 Le capitaine en chef ordonna qu’il soit mené dans le château, et demanda qu’il soit interrogé par le fouet; afin qu’il puisse savoir pourquoi ils criaient ainsi contre lui.

 24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

25 Et comme ils le liaient avec des courroies, Paul dit au centurion qui se tenait là: Vous est-il permis de fouetter un homme qui est Romain, et pas condamné?

 25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

26 Lorsque le centurion entendit cela, il alla le dire au capitaine en chef, disant: Prends garde à ce que tu fais: car cet homme est un Romain.

 26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

27 Alors le capitaine en chef vint, et lui dit: Dis-moi, es-tu un Romain? Il dit: Oui.

 27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

28 Et le capitaine en chef répondit: J’ai obtenu cette liberté pour une grande somme. Et Paul dit: Mais moi, je suis né libre.

 28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

29 Alors ceux qui devaient l’interroger le quittèrent aussitôt: et le capitaine en chef aussi eut peur, après qu’il eut su qu’il était un Romain, et parce qu’il l’avait fait lier.

 29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

30 Le lendemain, parce qu’il voulait savoir avec certitude pourquoi il était accusé des Juifs, il le délia de ses liens, et ordonna aux principaux prêtres et à tout le conseil de comparaître, et fit descendre Paul, et le plaça devant eux.

 30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
