1 Et Paul, regardant intensément le conseil, dit: Hommes et frères, j’ai vécu en toute bonne conscience jusqu’à ce jour devant Dieu.

 1 And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

2 Et le grand prêtre Ananias commanda à ceux qui se tenaient près de lui, de le frapper sur la bouche.

 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

3 Alors Paul lui dit: Dieu te frappera, toi muraille blanchie: car tu es assis pour me juger suivant la loi, et tu commandes de me frapper contrairement à la loi?

 3 Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

4 Et ceux qui se tenaient là dirent: Injuries-tu le grand prêtre de Dieu?

 4 And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God’s high priest?

5 Alors Paul dit: Je ne savais pas, frères, qu’il était le grand prêtre: car il est écrit, Tu ne parleras pas mal contre le dirigeant de ton peuple.

 5 Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

6 Mais lorsque Paul perçut qu’une partie d’entre eux étaient Sadducéens, et l’autre Pharisiens, il s’écria dans le conseil: Hommes et frères, je suis un Pharisien, le fils d’un Pharisien: et pour l’espérance et la résurrection des morts je suis accusé.

 6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

7 Et lorsqu’il eut dit cela, il s’éleva une dissension entre les Pharisiens et les Sadducéens: et la multitude était divisée.

 7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

8 Car les Sadducéens disent qu’il n’y a ni résurrection, ni ange, ni esprit: mais les Pharisiens confessent l’un et l’autre.

 8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

9 Et il s’éleva un grand cri: et les scribes qui étaient du parti des Pharisiens se levèrent, et objectèrent, disant: Nous ne trouvons aucun mal en cet homme: mais si un esprit ou un ange lui a parlé, ne nous battons pas contre Dieu.

 9 And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees’ part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

10 Et lorsqu’il s’éleva une grande dissension, le capitaine en chef, craignant que Paul ne soit mis en pièces par eux, commanda aux soldats de descendre, et de l’enlever de force du milieu d’eux, et de l’amener dans le château.

 10 And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

11 Et la nuit suivante le Seigneur se tint près de lui, et dit: Sois plei d’ardeur, Paul: car comme tu as attesté de moi à Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu rendes témoignage aussi à Rome.

 11 And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

12 Et lorsqu’il fit jour, certains des Juifs s’unirent, et se lièrent sous peine de malédiction, disant qu’ils ne mangeraient ni ne boiraient jusqu’à ce qu’ils aient tué Paul.

 12 And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

13 Et ils étaient plus de quarante qui avaient fait cette conspiration.

 13 And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

14 Et ils allèrent vers les principaux prêtres et anciens, et dirent: Nous nous sommes liés sous peine d’une grande malédiction, que nous ne mangerons rien jusqu’à ce que nous ayons tué Paul.

 14 And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

15 Maintenant donc vous avec le conseil signifiez au capitaine en chef qu’il le fasse descende vers vous demain, comme si vous vouliez vous enquérir plus parfaitement à son sujet: et nous, avant même qu’il approche, sommes prêts à le tuer.

 15 Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

16 Et lorsque le fils de la sœur de Paul entendit parler de leur guet-apens, il vint, et entra dans le château, et le raconta à Paul.

 16 And when Paul’s sister’s son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

17 Alors Paul appela un des centurions vers lui, et dit: Amène ce jeune homme vers le capitaine en chef: car il a une certaine chose à lui dire.

 17 Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

18 Ainsi il le prit, et l’amena au capitaine en chef, et dit: Le prisonnier Paul m’a demandé de venir vers lui, et m’a prié d’amener ce jeune homme vers toi, il a quelque chose à te dire.

 18 So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

19 Alors le capitaine en chef le prit par la main, et alla à part avec lui, et lui demanda: Qu’est-ce que tu as à me dire?

 19 Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

20 Et il dit: Les Juifs ont convenu de désirer de toi que demain tu fasses descendre Paul au conseil, comme s’ils voulaient s’enquérir plus parfaitement à son sujet.

 20 And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

21 Mais ne leur cède pas: car plus de quarante hommes d’entre eux lui tendent un guet-apens, lesquels se sont liés avec un serment qu’ils ne mangeraient ni boiraient jusqu’à ce qu’ils l’aient tué: et maintenant ils sont prêts, attendant une promesse de toi.

 21 But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

22 Ainsi le capitaine en chef laissa alors partir le jeune homme, et lui recommanda: Prends garde de ne dire à personne que tu m’as déclaré ces choses.

 22 So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

23 Et il appela vers lui deux centurions, disant: Préparez deux cents soldats pour aller à Césarée, et soixante-dix cavaliers, et deux cents hommes avec lances, à la troisième heure de la nuit;

 23 And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Cæsarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

24 Et procurez-leur des montures, afin qu’ils puissent mettre Paul dessus, et le conduire sain et sauf vers Félix, le gouverneur.

 24 And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

25 Et il écrivit une lettre suivant cette manière:

 25 And he wrote a letter after this manner:

26 Claude Lysias, au plus excellent gouverneur Félix, envoie ses salutations.

 26 Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.

27 Cet homme a été pris par les Juifs et aurait dû être tué par eux: alors je suis venu avec une armée, et je l’ai secouru, ayant compris qu’il était un Romain.

 27 This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

28 Et lorsque j’ai voulu connaître la cause pour laquelle ils l’accusaient, je l’ai amené vers leur conseil:

 28 And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:

29 Lequel j’ai perçu être accusé concernant des questions de leur loi, mais de n’avoir rien à sa charge digne de mort ou de liens.

 29 Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

30 Et quand on m’a dit que les Juifs tendaient un guet-apens contre l’homme, je te l’ai aussitôt envoyé, et donné ordre aussi à ses accusateurs de dire devant toi ce qu’ils avaient contre lui. Adieu.

 30 And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.

31 Puis les soldats, comme il leur avait été commandé, prirent Paul, et l’amenèrent de nuit à Antipatris.

 31 Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

32 Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers aller avec lui, et retournèrent au château:

 32 On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

33 Qui, lorsqu’ils vinrent à Césarée, et remirent l’épître au gouverneur, présentèrent aussi Paul devant lui.

 33 Who, when they came to Cæsarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

34 Et lorsque le gouverneur eut lu la lettre, il demanda de quelle province il était. Et quand il comprit qu’il était de Cilicie;

 34 And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;

35 Je t’entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront aussi venus. Et il commanda de le garder dans la salle de jugement d’Hérode.

 35 I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.
