1 Puis nous nous sommes tournés et avons entrepris notre voyage vers le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme le SEIGNEUR me l’avait dit ; et nous avons tourné autour du mont Seir de nombreux jours.

 1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.

2 Et le SEIGNEUR me parla, disant :

 2 And the LORD spake unto me, saying,

3 Vous avez assez tourné autour de cette montagne ; dirigez-vous vers le Nord ;

 3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

4 Et commande au peuple, disant : Vous allez traverser le territoire de vos frères, les enfants d’Esau (Esaü), qui demeurent en Seir, et ils auront peur de vous ; soyez donc bien sur vos gardes ;

 4 And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:

5 N’ayez pas de démêlé avec eux ; car je ne vous donnerai rien de leur pays, non, pas même la largeur d’un pied ; parce que j’ai donné à Esau (Esaü) le mont Seir en possession.

 5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

6 Vous achèterez d’eux la nourriture pour de l’argent, pour que vous puissiez manger ; et vous achèterez d’eux aussi l’eau pour de l’argent, pour que vous puissiez boire.

 6 Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

7 Car le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu t’a béni dans toutes les œuvres de ta main ; il connaît ta marche à travers ce grand désert ; le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu a été avec toi pendant ces quarante années ; tu n’as manqué de rien.

 7 For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

8 Et quand nous sommes passés au-delà de nos frères, les enfants d’Esau (Esaü), qui demeuraient à Seir, par le chemin de la plaine, depuis Elath et depuis Eziongaber (Etsion-Guéber) ; nous avons tourné, et nous sommes passés par le chemin du désert de Moab.

 8 And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Eziongaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

9 Alors le SEIGNEUR me dit : N’afflige pas les Moabites, et ne les provoque pas à la bataille ; car je ne te donnerai rien de leur terre en possession, parce que j’ai donné Ar en possession aux enfants de Lot.

 9 And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.

10 Les Emims y demeuraient auparavant, peuple grand, et nombreux, et de haute taille, comme les Anakims ;

 10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;

11 Qui étaient aussi considérés comme des géants, comme les Anakims ; mais les Moabites les appelaient Emims.

 11 Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims.

12 Les Horims aussi demeuraient auparavant en Seir ; mais les enfants d’Esau (Esaü) leur succédèrent lorsqu’ils les détruisirent de devant eux ; et ils demeurèrent à leur place, comme a fait Israël dans la terre de sa possession que le SEIGNEUR leur donna.

 12 The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.

13 Maintenant levez-vous, dis-je, et passez le torrent de Zered. Et nous avons traversé le torrent de Zered.

 13 Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.

14 Et l’espace de temps pendant lequel nous sommes allés depuis Kadeshbarnea jusqu’au passage du torrent de Zered, a été de trente-huit ans, jusqu’à ce que toute la génération des hommes de guerre ait été consumée du milieu de l’armée, comme le SEIGNEUR le leur avait juré.

 14 And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.

15 Car en effet la main du SEIGNEUR était contre eux pour les détruire du milieu de l’armée, jusqu’à ce qu’ils aient été consumés.

 15 For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.

16 ¶ Ainsi il arriva lorsque tous les hommes de guerre du milieu du peuple, ont été consumés et morts,

 16 ¶ So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

17 Le SEIGNEUR me parla, disant :

 17 That the LORD spake unto me, saying,

18 Tu vas aujourd’hui traverser Ar, le territoire de Moab ;

 18 Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:

19 Et quand tu seras arrivé en face des enfants d’Ammon, ne les afflige pas, et n’aie pas non plus de démêlé avec eux ; car je ne te donnerai aucune possession de la terre des enfants d’Ammon, parce que je l’ai donnée en possession aux enfants de Lot.

 19 And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

20 (Qui aussi était considéré une terre de géants ; les géants y demeuraient auparavant, et les Ammonites les appellent Zamzummim ;

 20 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;

21 C’était un peuple grand, et nombreux, et de haute taille, comme les Anakims ; mais le SEIGNEUR les détruisit devant eux, et ils leur succédèrent, et demeurèrent à leur place.

 21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:

22 Comme il avait fait aux enfants d’Esau (Esaü), qui demeuraient en Seir, quand il détruisit les Horims devant eux ; et ils leur succédèrent, et demeurèrent à leur place, jusqu’à ce jour.

 22 As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:

23 Quant aux Avims, lesquels demeuraient en Hazerim, jusqu’à Azzah (Gaza), les Caphtorims, qui étant sortis de Caphtor les détruisirent et demeurèrent à leur place).

 23 And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

24 ¶ Levez-vous, entreprenez votre voyage, et passez la rivière Arnon ; regarde, j’ai donné en ta main Sihon, le roi de Heshbon (Hesbon), l’Amorite, avec sa terre ; commence à la posséder, et provoque-le à la bataille.

 24 ¶ Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

25 Aujourd’hui je commencerai à répandre la terreur et la peur de toi sur les nations qui sont sous le ciel entier ; car ils entendront parler de toi et ils trembleront, et seront angoissés à cause de toi.

 25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

26 ¶ Et j’ai envoyé des messagers depuis le désert de Kedemoth, à Sihon, roi de Heshbon (Hesbon), avec des paroles de paix, disant :

 26 ¶ And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

27 Laisse-moi traverser ton pays ; j’irai par le grand chemin, je ne me détournerai ni à main droite ni à gauche ;

 27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

28 Tu me vendras de la nourriture, pour de l’argent, pour que je puisse manger ; et tu me donneras de l’eau, pour de l’argent, pour que je puisse boire ; je passerai seulement avec mes pieds,

 28 Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;

29 (Comme m’ont fait les enfants d’Esau (Esaü), qui demeurent à Seir, et les Moabites, qui demeurent à Ar) jusqu’à ce que je passe le Jourdain, pour entrer en la terre que le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous donne.

 29 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.

30 Mais Sihon, roi de Heshbon (Hesbon), n’a pas voulu nous laisser passer chez lui ; car le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu avait endurci son esprit et rendit son cœur obstiné, afin qu’il puisse le livrer en ta main, comme il paraît aujourd’hui.

 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

31 Et le SEIGNEUR me dit : Regarde, j’ai commencé de te donner devant toi Sihon etsa terre ; commence à prendre possession, afin que tu puisses hériter sa terre.

 31 And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

32 Sihon sortit donc contre nous, lui et tout son peuple, pour combattre à Jahaz.

 32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

33 Et le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu le livra devant nous, et nous l’avons battu, lui, ses fils, et tout son peuple.

 33 And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

34 Et nous avons pris toutes ses villes à ce moment-là, et nous avons complètement détruit, les hommes, les femmes et les jeunes enfants dans chaque ville ; nous n’avons laissé personne.

 34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

35 Nous avons seulement fait notre proie du bétail et du butin des villes que nous avions prises.

 35 Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

36 Depuis Aroer, qui est sur le bord de la rivière Arnon, et depuis la ville qui est le long de la rivière, jusqu’à Gilead (Galaad), il n’y avait pas de ville trop fortifiée pour nous ; le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous les livra toutes ;

 36 From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:

37 Seulement tu n’es pas entré dans la terre des enfants d’Ammon, ni sur aucune berge de la rivière Jabbok, ni dans les villes des montagnes, ni dans tout ce que le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous avait défendu.

 37 Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.
