1 Ce sont ici les paroles que Moïse dit à tout Israël, de ce côté du Jourdain dans le désert, dans la plaine face à la mer Rouge, entre Paran et Tophel, et Laban, et Hazeroth (Hatséroth), et Dizahab (Di‑Zahab).

 1 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

2 (Il y a onze journées de marche depuis Horeb, par le chemin du mont Seir, jusqu’à Kadeshbarnea (Kadès-Barnéa)).

 2 (There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadeshbarnea.)

3 Et il arriva, en la quarantième année, au onzième mois, au premier jour du mois, que Moïse parla aux enfants d’Israël, selon tout ce que le SEIGNEUR lui avait donné comme commandement pour eux ;

 3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;

4 Après qu’il ait tué Sihon, le roi des Amorites (Amoréens), qui demeurait à Heshbon (Hesbon), et Og, le roi de Bashan (Bassan), qui demeurait à Astaroth (Ashtaroth) et à Edrei.

 4 After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:

5 De ce côté du Jourdain, dans la terre de Moab, Moïse commença à déclarer cette loi, disant :

 5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

6 Le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous parla en Horeb, disant : Vous êtes demeurés assez longtemps en ce mont ;

 6 The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:

7 Tournez-vous et entreprenez votre voyage, et allez vers le mont des Amorites (Amoréens), et dans tous les lieux voisins, dans la plaine, dans les collines, et dans la vallée, et vers le Sud, et le long de la mer, au pays des Canaanites (Cananéens), et au Liban, jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve Euphrate.

 7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 Regardez, j’ai mis le pays devant vous ; entrez et prenez possession du pays que le SEIGNEUR a juré de donner à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, et à leur semence après eux.

 8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

9 ¶ Et je vous parlai en ce temps-là, disant : Je ne puis vous porter, moi seul.

 9 ¶ And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:

10 Le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu vous a multipliés, et voici, vous êtes aujourd’hui comme les étoiles du ciel par votre multitude.

 10 The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

11 (Que le SEIGNEUR Dieu de vos pères, vous fasse mille fois plus nombreux que vous êtes, et vous bénisse comme il vous l’a promis) !

 11 (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)

12 Comment puis-je moi seul porter votre charge, et votre fardeau et vos querelles ?

 12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?

13 Prenez-vous des hommes sages et intelligents et connus parmi vos tribus, et je les établirai dirigeants sur vous.

 13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

14 Et vous m’avez répondu et dit ; La chose que tu as dit de faire, nous semble bonne.

 14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.

15 Alors je pris les responsables de vos tribus, des hommes sages et connus, et je les mis chefs sur vous, capitaines de milliers, capitaines de centaines, capitaines de cinquantaines et capitaines de dizaines, et officiers parmi vos tribus.

 15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.

16 Et je commandai à vos juges, en ce temps-là, disant : Écoutez les différends entre vos frères, et jugez droitement entre chaque homme et son frère, et l’étranger qui est avec lui ;

 16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.

17 Vous ne ferez pas de distinction de personnes pour le jugement ; mais vous entendrez aussi bien le petit que le grand ; vous n’aurez peur de la face d’aucun homme, car le jugement est de Dieu ; et la cause qui est trop difficile pour vous, vous la ferez venir devant moi et je l’entendrai.

 17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

18 Et je vous commandai, en ce temps-là, toutes les choses que vous deviez faire.

 18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

19 ¶ Et quand nous sommes partis d’Horeb, nous avons traversé tout ce grand et terrible désert que vous avez vu, sur le chemin de la montagne des Amorites (Amoréens), comme le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous l’avait commandé ; et nous sommes arrivés à Kadeshbarnea.

 19 ¶ And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadeshbarnea.

20 Et je vous ai dit : Vous êtes arrivés jusqu’à la montagne des Amorites, que le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous donne.

 20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.

21 Regarde, le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu a mis le pays devant toi ; monte et prends-en possession, comme le SEIGNEUR Dieu de tes pères, te l’a dit ; n’ai pas peur, et ne sois pas non plus découragé.

 21 Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

22 ¶ Et vous vous êtes tous approchés de moi, et avez dit : Nous enverrons des hommes devant nous, et ils reconnaîtront pour nous le pays et ils nous rapporteront des nouvelles du chemin par lequel nous devons monter, et les villes vers lesquelles nous irons ;

 22 ¶ And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.

23 Et ce propos me sembla bon ; et je pris douze hommes parmi vous, un homme par tribu.

 23 And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:

24 Et ils se tournèrent, et montèrent à la montagne, et arrivèrent à la vallée d’Eshcol, et l’explorèrent.

 24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.

25 Et ils prirent dans leurs mains du fruit de la terre, et nous l’apportèrent ; et nous donnèrent des nouvelles, et dirent : C’est une bonne terre que le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous donne.

 25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.

26 Malgré tout vous n’avez pas voulu monter, mais vous vous êtes rebellés contre le commandement du SEIGNEUR votre Dieu ;

 26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God:

27 Et vous avez murmuré dans vos tentes, et dit : C’est parce que le SEIGNEUR nous hait, qu’il nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, pour nous livrer en la main des Amorites (Amoréens), pour nous détruire.

 27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

28 Où monterions-nous ? Nos frères ont découragé notre cœur, disant : Le peuple est plus grand et de plus haute taille que nous, les villes sont grandes et fortifiées jusqu’au ciel, et de plus nous avons vu là les fils des Anakims.

 28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.

29 Alors je vous ai dit : Ne vous épouvantez pas, et n’ayez pas peur d’eux.

 29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

30 Le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu, qui va devant vous, lui-même combattra pour vous, selon tout ce qu’il a fait pour vous sous vos yeux en Égypte,

 30 The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

31 Et dans le désert, où tu as vu de quelle manière le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu t’a porté comme un homme porte son fils, tout le long du chemin où vous êtes allés, jusqu’à ce que vous soyez arrivés en ce lieu.

 31 And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.

32 Toutefois dans cette affaire, vous n’avez pas cru le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu,

 32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God,

33 Qui marchait sur le chemin devant vous, afin de reconnaître un lieu pour y dresser vos tentes, dans le feu de la nuit, pour vous montrer le chemin où vous deviez marcher, et le jour, dans un nuage.

 33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.

34 Et le SEIGNEUR entendit la voix de vos paroles, et il s’irrita, et jura, disant :

 34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,

35 Certainement aucun des hommes de cette génération mauvaise ne verra cette bonne terre que j’ai juré de donner à vos pères,

 35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,

36 Sauf Caleb, le fils de Jephunneh (Jephumné) : lui, le verra ; et je lui donnerai, à lui et à ses enfants, la terre sur laquelle il a marché, parce qu’il a pleinement suivi le SEIGNEUR.

 36 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD.

37 Le SEIGNEUR se courrouça contre moi à cause de vous, disant : Toi non plus, tu n’y entreras pas.

 37 Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.

38 Mais Joshua (Josué), le fils de Nun, qui se tient devant toi, lui, y entrera ; encourage-le, car il en fera hériter Israël

 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39 De plus vos jeunes enfants, dont vous avez dit qu’ils seraient une proie, et vos enfants, qui en ce temps-là ne connaissaient pas la différence entre le bien et le mal, eux y entreront, et à eux je le donnerai, et ils le posséderont ;

 39 Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

40 Mais quant à vous, retournez, et entreprenez votre voyage vers le désert par le chemin de la mer Rouge.

 40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

41 Alors vous avez répondu, et m’avez dit : Nous avons péché contre le SEIGNEUR ; nous monterons et nous combattrons, selon tout ce que le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous a commandé. Et chacun a ceint ses armes de guerre, vous étiez prêts pour monter sur la colline.

 41 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

42 Et le SEIGNEUR me dit : Dis-leur : Ne montez pas, et ne combattez pas, car je ne suis pas au milieu de vous ; de peur que vous ne soyez battus face à vos ennemis.

 42 And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

43 Et je vous ai parlé, et vous n’avez pas voulu entendre, mais vous vous êtes rebellés contre le commandement du SEIGNEUR, et présomptueusement vous avez monté la colline.

 43 So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.

44 Et les Amorites (Amoréens), qui demeuraient dans cette montagne, sortirent contre vous, et vous poursuivirent comme font les abeilles, et vous battirent à Seir, et même jusqu’à Hormah.

 44 And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

45 Et vous êtes revenus et vous avez pleuré devant le SEIGNEUR ; mais le SEIGNEUR n’écouta pas votre voix, et ne vous prêta pas l’oreille.

 45 And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

46 Ainsi vous êtes demeurés à Kadesh (Kadès) beaucoup de jours, selon les jours que vous y avez demeuré.

 46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.
