1 Puis je me suis tourné et ai considéré toutes les oppressions qui sont commises sous le soleil ; et voici, les larmes de ceux qui sont opprimés, et ils n’avaient aucun consolateur ; et du côté de leurs oppresseurs il y avait la puissance ; et ils n’avaient aucun consolateur.

 1 So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

2 C’est pourquoi j’apprécie plus les morts qui sont déjà morts, que les vivants qui sont encore en vie ;

 2 Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

3 Oui, mieux est celui qui n’a pas encore été, que les uns et les autres, lequel n’a pas vu les œuvres mauvaises qui se font sous le soleil.

 3 Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

4 ¶ Puis j’ai considéré toute occupation et toute œuvre intègre, c’est à cause de cela qu’un homme est envieux de son voisin. Cela aussi est vanité et vexation d’esprit.

 4 ¶ Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

5 L’insensé se croise les mains et mange sa chair.

 5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

6 Mieux vaut une main pleine avec tranquillité, que deux mains pleines, avec occupation et vexation d’esprit.

 6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

7 ¶ Puis je me suis tourné et vu (une autre) vanité sous le soleil.

 7 ¶ Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.

8 Il y a un homme seul, et il n’y a pas de second ; oui, il n’a ni enfant, ni frère, toutefois, il n’y a pas de fin à tout son travail ; même son œil n’est pas rassasié de richesses ; il ne se dit pas non plus : Pour qui est-ce que je travaille et que je prive mon âme de bien ? Cela aussi est vanité et une douloureuse occupation.

 8 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

9 ¶ Deux valent mieux qu’un ; parce qu’ils ont un bon salaire pour leur travail.

 9 ¶ Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

10 Car s’ils tombent, l’un peut relever son compagnon ; mais malheur à celui qui est seul quand il tombe ; car il n’a personne pour le secourir.

 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

11 De même si deux couchent ensemble, ils auront chaud ; mais comment aura chaud celui qui est seul ?

 11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

12 Et si quelqu’un a le dessus contre un seul, les deux pourront lui résister ; et la corde triple ne se rompt pas rapidement.

 12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

13 ¶ Mieux vaut un enfant pauvre et sage qu’un roi vieux et insensé, qui ne sait plus être admonesté.

 13 ¶ Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

14 Car sorti de prison, il vient pour régner ; tandis qu’il est né dans son royaume, devient pauvre.

 14 For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.

15 J’ai considéré tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil, avec le second enfant qui le remplacera.

 15 I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.

16 Il n’y a pas de fin à tout le peuple, savoir tous ceux qui ont été devant eux ; ceux aussi qui viendront après ne se réjouiront pas ben lui. Certainement, cela aussi est vanité et vexation d’esprit.

 16 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
