1 Après ces choses, lorsque la colère du roi Ahasuerus (Assuérus) fut apaisée, il se souvint de Vasthi, et de ce qu’elle avait fait, et de ce qui avait été décrété contre elle.

 1 After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.

2 Alors les serviteurs du roi qui le servaient dirent : Qu’on cherche pour le roi des jeunes filles belles et vierges ;

 2 Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:

3 Et que le roi établisse des officiers dans toutes les provinces de son royaume, afin qu’ils puissent rassembler toutes les jeunes et belles vierges à Shushan (Suse) le palais, dans la maison des femmes, sous la surveillance d’Hege (Hégaï), le chambellan du roi et gardien des femmes ; et qu’on leur donne les choses nécessaires pour leur purification.

 3 And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king’s chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:

4 Et que la jeune fille qui plaira au roi soit reine à la place de Vasthi. Et la chose plut au roi, et il fit ainsi.

 4 And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

5 ¶ Or il y avait à Shushan au palais, un certain Juif, dont le nom était Mordecai (Mardochée), le fils de Jair, fils de Shimei, fils de Kis, un Benjamite,

 5 ¶ Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;

6 Qui avait été transporté de Jérusalem avec la captivité laquelle avait été emmenée avec Jeconiah, roi de Judah (Juda), que Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar) le roi de Babylone, avait transportée.

 6 Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

7 Et il élevait Hadassah (Hadassa), qui est Esther, la fille de son oncle ; car elle n’avait ni père ni mère, et la jeune fille était gracieuse et belle ; et après la mort de son père et de sa mère, Mordecai (Mardochée) l’avait prise pour sa propre fille.

 7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.

8 ¶ Ainsi il arriva, lorsque l’ordre du roi et son décret furent connus, et que beaucoup de jeunes filles furent rassemblées à Shushan au palais, sous la charge d’Hege (Hégaï), Esther fut aussi amenée dans la maison du roi, sous la surveillance d’Hege (Hégai), le gardien des femmes.

 8 ¶ So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

9 Et la jeune fille lui plut, et elle reçu de la bonté de sa part ; et il s’empressa de lui donner les choses nécessaires pour sa purification, les choses dont elle avait besoin, ainsi que sept jeunes filles qui furent choisies pour lui être données, de la maison du roi, et il la plaça avec ses jeunes filles dans le meilleur appartement de la maison des femmes.

 9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.

10 Esther n’avait fait connaître ni son peuple ni sa parenté ; car Mordecai (Mardochée) lui avait recommandé de ne pas les faire connaître.

 10 Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it.

11 Et chaque jour Mordecai (Mardochée) se promenait devant la cour de la maison des femmes, pour savoir comment se portait Esther, et ce qui lui arriverait.

 11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women’s house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.

12 ¶ Or quand venait le tour pour chaque jeune fille d’entrer chez le roi Ahasuerus (Assuérus) après qu’elle ait été pendant douze mois selon ce qui était requis des femmes (car c’est ainsi que s’accomplissaient les jours de leur purification, c’est-à-dire six mois avec de l’huile de myrrhe, et six mois avec des parfums d’odeur agréable et d’autres choses pour la purification des femmes),

 12 ¶ Now when every maid’s turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)

13 Ainsi venait chaque jeune fille vers le roi ; tout ce qu’elle désirait lui était donné pour aller avec elle de la maison des femmes à la maison du roi.

 13 Then thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house.

14 Le soir elle allait, et le matin, elle retournait dans la seconde maison des femmes, sous la surveillance de Shaashgaz, le chambellan du roi, gardien des concubines ; elle ne venait plus vers le roi, à moins que le roi n’en ait le désir, et qu’elle ne soit appelée par son nom.

 14 In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.

15 ¶ Quand donc le tour d’Esther, la fille d’Abihail, oncle de Mordecai (Mardochée) qui l’avait prise pour sa fille, fut venu, pour entrer vers le roi, elle ne demanda rien, seulement ce qu’avait fixé Hegai, le chambellan du roi, gardien des femmes. Et Esther obtint la faveur de tous ceux qui la voyaient.

 15 ¶ Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.

16 Ainsi Esther fut emmenée vers le roi Ahasuerus (Assuérus), dans sa maison royale, au dixième mois, qui est le mois de Tebeth, en la septième année de son règne.

 16 So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

17 Et le roi aima Esther plus que toutes les autres femmes, et elle obtint grâce et faveur devant lui plus que toutes les vierges ; et il mit la couronne royale sur sa tête, et la fit reine à la place de Vasthi.

 17 And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

18 Puis le roi fit un grand festin à tous ses princes et ses serviteurs, savoir le festin d’Esther ; et il fit une réduction d’impôts aux provinces, et fit des présents, selon l’opulence du roi.

 18 Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther’s feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.

19 Et lorsque les vierges furent assemblées esemble pour la seconde fois, alors Mordecai (Mardochée) était assis à la porte du roi.

 19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king’s gate.

20 Esther n’avait pas encore fait connaître ni sa parenté ni son peuple, comme Mordecai (Mardochée) le lui avait suggéré ; car Esther faisait ce que Mordecai (Mardochée) lui avait commandé, comme lorsqu’elle était élevée chez lui.

 20 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.

21 ¶ En ces jours-là, Mordecai (Mardochée) étant assis à la porte du roi, Bigthan et Teresh, deux des chambellans du roi, parmi les gardiens du seuil, se mirent en colère, et cherchèrent à mettre la main sur le roi Ahasuerus (Assuérus).

 21 ¶ In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king’s gate, two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.

22 Et la chose vint à la connaissance de Mordecai (Mardochée), qui le fit savoir à la reine Esther, et Esther la rapporta au roi au nom de Mordecai (Mardochée).

 22 And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai’s name.

23 Et lorsqu’on fit une enquête sur la chose, et elle fut trouvée telle, c’est pourquoi tous deux furent pendus à un arbre ; et cela fut écrit dans le livre des chroniques devant le roi.

 23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
