1 Or quand les ennemis de Judah et de Benjamin entendirent que les enfants de la captivité bâtissaient le temple du SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël,

 1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;

2 Ils vinrent vers Zerubbabel et vers les chefs des pères, et leur dirent : Permettez que nous bâtissions avec vous ; car nous cherchons votre Dieu comme vous ; et c’est à lui que nous sacrifions depuis les jours d’Esarhaddon (d’Ésar‑Haddon), le roi d’Assyrie, qui nous a fait monter ici.

 2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

3 Mais Zerubbabel, Jeshua, et le reste des chefs des pères d’Israël, leur dirent : Vous n’avez rien à faire avec nous pour bâtir une maison à notre Dieu ; mais nous mêmes, ensemble bâtirons au SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël, comme le roi Cyrus, le roi de Perse, nous l’a commandé.

 3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

4 Alors le peuple du pays affaiblit les mains du peuple de Judah, et ils les génèrent pour bâtir ;

 4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 Et ils soudoyèrent contre eux des conseillers pour déjouer leur projet, pendant tous les jours de Cyrus, roi de Perse, et même jusqu’au règne de Darius, roi de Perse.

 5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 Et pendant le règne d’Ahasuerus (Assuérus), au commencement de son règne, ils lui écrivirent une accusation contre les habitants de Judah et de Jérusalem.

 6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 ¶ Et aux jours d’Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, et les autres de leurs compagnons, écrivirent à Artaxerxes, roi de Perse ; et le contenu de la lettre était écrit en langue Syrienne et interprété dans la langue Syrienne.

 7 ¶ And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

8 Rehum, le chancelier, et Shimshai, le scribe, écrivirent une lettre contre Jérusalem, au roi Artaxerxes, de cette manière :

 8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

9 Alors Rehum, le chancelier et Shimshai, le scribe, et le reste de leurs compagnons, les Dinaites, les Apharsathchites, les Tarpelites, les Arphasites, les Arkévites, les Babyloniens, les Susankites, les Dehavites, et les Elamites,

 9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

10 Et le reste des nations que le grand et notable Asnappar (Osnapar) transporta et fit habiter dans les villes de Samarie, et les autres qui sont de ce côté du fleuve, et à une telle époque.

 10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.

11 ¶ C’est ici la copie de la lettre qu’ils lui envoyèrent savoir à Artaxerxes, le roi : Tes serviteurs, les hommes de ce côté du fleuve, et à une telle époque.

 11 ¶ This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.

12 Que le roi sache que les Juifs qui sont montés de chez toi vers nous, sont venus à Jérusalem, bâtissant la ville rebelle et méchante, et en ont posé les murs et ont joint les fondements.

 12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.

13 Maintenant, que le roi sache que si cette ville est bâtie et ses murs relevés, ils ne paieront donc ni péage, ni tribut, ni douane, et ainsi tu endommageras le revenu des rois.

 13 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

14 Or, comme nous sommes salariés du palais du roi, et qu’il n’est pas convenable pour nous de voir le déshonneur du roi, c’est pourquoi nous envoyons et notifions le roi.

 14 Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

15 Qu’on cherche au livre des registres de tes pères, ainsi tu trouveras dans le livre des registres et tu sauras que cette ville est une ville rebelle et nuisible aux rois et aux provinces, et que depuis les temps anciens on y a fait des séditions ; c’est pour cela que cette ville a été détruite.

 15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

16 Nous notifions le roi, que si cette ville est rebâtie et ses murs relevés, tu n’auras plus aucune portion de ce côté du fleuve.

 16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

17 ¶ Alors le roi envoya une réponse à Rehum, le chancelier, et à Shimshai, le scribe, et au reste de leurs compagnons qui demeuraient à Samarie, et au reste de l’autre côté du fleuve : Paix, et à une telle époque.

 17 ¶ Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.

18 La lettre que vous nous avez envoyée, a été distinctement lue devant moi.

 18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

19 Et j’ai donné ordre, et l’on a cherché, et l’on a trouvé que, depuis les temps anciens, cette ville s’est soulevée contre les rois, et que séditions et rébellions y ont eu lieu.

 19 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

20 Et qu’aussi il y a eu des rois puissants à Jérusalem, qui ont dominé sur tout ce qui est au-delà du fleuve, et qu’on leur payait péage, tribut, et douane.

 20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

21 Maintenant donc donnez ordre de faire cesser ces hommes, et que cette ville ne soit pas bâtie, jusqu’à ce qu’un autre ordre soit donné de ma part.

 21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.

22 Prenez soin de ne pas manquer à faire ceci : Pourquoi le dommage augmenterait-il au préjudice des rois ?

 22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 ¶ Or, dès que la copie de la lettre du roi Artaxerxes eut été lue devant Rehum et Shimshai, le scribe, et leurs compagnons, ils montèrent en hâte à Jérusalem vers les Juifs, et les firent cesser par force et par puissance.

 23 ¶ Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Alors le travail de la maison de Dieu, qui est à Jérusalem, cessa. Ainsi il cessa jusqu’à la seconde année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.

 24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
