1 Et lorsque Rachel vit qu’elle ne donnait pas d’enfant à Jacob, Rachel envia sa sœur ; et dit à Jacob : Donne-moi des enfants, autrement je meurs.

 1 And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.

2 Et la colère de Jacob s’enflamma contre Rachel : et il dit, Suis-je à la place de Dieu, qui t’a retenu le fruit de l’utérus ?

 2 And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

3 Et elle dit:,Voici ma domestique Bilhah, va vers elle ; et elle enfantera sur mes genoux, afin que je puisse aussi avoir des enfants par elle.

 3 And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

4 Et elle lui donna Bilhah, sa suivante pour femme : et Jacob alla vers elle.

 4 And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.

5 Et Bilhah conçut, et enfanta un fils à Jacob.

 5 And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son.

6 Et Rachel dit, Dieu m’a jugé, et a aussi entendu ma voix, et m’a donné un fils : par conséquent elle appela son nom Dan.

 6 And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.

7 Et Bilhah, domestique de Rachel, conçut encore et enfanta un second fils à Jacob.

 7 And Bilhah Rachel’s maid conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son.

8 Et Rachel dit, J’ai fortement lutté contre ma sœur ; et je l’ai emporté: et elle appela son nom Naphtali.

 8 And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.

9 Lorsque Leah vit qu’elle avait cessé d’enfanter, elle prit Zilpah, sa domestique, et la donna à Jacob pour femme.

 9 When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.

10 Et Zilpah, domestique de Leah, enfanta à Jacob un fils.

 10 And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a son.

11 Et Leah dit, Une troupe arrive: et elle appela son nom Gad.

 11 And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.

12 Et Zilpah, domestique de Leah, enfanta à Jacob un second fils.

 12 And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a second son.

13 Et Leah dit, Je suis heureuse, car les filles m’appelleront bénie ; et elle appela son nom Asher.

 13 And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.

14 ¶ Et Ruben s’en alla aux jours de la moisson des blés, et trouva des mandragores dans les champs, et les apporta à sa mère Leah. Alors Rachel dit à Leah: Donne-moi, je te prie, des mandragores de ton fils.

 14 ¶ And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.

15 Et elle lui dit, Est-ce une petite affaire que tu aies pris mon mari ? Et que tu veuilles prendre aussi les mandragores de mon fils ? Et Rachel dit, Par conséquent il couchera avec toi cette nuit pour les mandragores de ton fils.

 15 And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.

16 Et Jacob revint des champs le soir, Leah alla à sa rencontre, et dit, Tu dois venir vers moi ; car assurément je t’ai loué pour les mandragores de mon fils. Et il coucha avec elle cette nuit-là.

 16 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.

17 Et Dieu prêta attention à Leah, et elle conçut, et enfanta à Jacob un cinquième fils.

 17 And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth son.

18 Et elle dit, Dieu m’a donné mon salaire, parce que j’ai donné ma chambrière à mon mari : et elle appela son nom Issachar.

 18 And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.

19 Et Leah conçut de nouveau, et enfanta à Jacob un sixième fils.

 19 And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.

20 Et Leah dit, Dieu m’a doté d’une bonne dot ; maintenant mon mari voudra demeurer avec moi ; car je lui ai enfanté six fils : eEt elle appela son nom Zebulun.

 20 And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.

21 Et après cela elle enfanta une fille, et appela son nom Dinah.

 21 And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah.

22 ¶ Et Dieu se souvint de Rachel, et Dieu l’écouta, et ouvrit son utérus.

 22 ¶ And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.

23 Et elle conçut et enfanta un fils ; et dit: Dieu a ôté mon outrage :

 23 And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:

24 Et elle appela son nom Joseph ; et dit, Le SEIGNEUR m’ajoutera un autre fils.

 24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.

25 ¶ Et il arriva après que Rachel eut enfanté Joseph, que Jacob dit à Laban, Renvoie-moi, afin que je puisse aller dans mon propre lieu, et dans mon pays.

 25 ¶ And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.

26 Donne-moi mes femmes et mes enfants, pour lesquels je t’ai servi, et laisse-moi partir: car tu connais le service que je t’ai fait.

 26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.

27 Et Laban lui dit: Je te prie, si j’ai trouvé faveur à tes yeux, reste: car j’ai appris par expérience que le SEIGNEUR m’a béni à cause de toi.

 27 And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.

28 Et il dit, Indique-moi ton salaire, et je te le donnerai.

 28 And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.

29 Et il lui dit: Tu sais comment je t’ai servi, et comment ton bétail est devenu avec moi.

 29 And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.

30 Car ce que tu avais était peu avant que je vienne, et il est maintenant devenu une multitude ; et le SEIGNEUR t’a béni depuis mon arrivée : et maintenant, quand pourvoirai-je aussi pour ma propre maison ?

 30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?

31 Et il dit, Que te donnerai-je ? Et Jacob dit, Tu ne me donneras rien : si tu veux faire cette chose pour moi, je nourrirai et garderai encore tes troupeaux :

 31 And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:

32 Je passerai parmi dans tout ton troupeau aujourd’hui, retirant toute bête marquetée et tachetée, et toute bête brune parmi les moutons, et les tachetées et marquetées parmi les chèvres : et de tel doit être mon salaire.

 32 I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.

33 Ainsi ma droiture doit répondre pour moi au moment venu, lorsqu’elle doit venir pour mon salaire devant ta face: tout ce qui ne sera pas marqueté ou tacheté parmi les chèvres, et brun parmi les moutons, ceci doit être compté comme volé pour moi

 33 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.

34 Et Laban dit, Voici, je veux qu’il puisse en être selon ta parole.

 34 And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.

35 Et il retira ce jour-là les boucs qui étaient rayés et tachetés et toutes les chèvres qui étaient marquetées et tachetées, et toutes celles qui avaient un peu de blanc, et tous les bruns parmi les moutons ; et il les mit en la main de ses fils.

 35 And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.

36 Et il mit l’espace de trois jours de chemin entre lui et Jacob: et Jacob gardait le reste des troupeaux de Laban.

 36 And he set three days’ journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 ¶ Et Jacob prit des tiges vertes de peuplier, de noisetier, et de châtaigner ; et y pela des raies blanches, et fit apparaître le blanc qui était sur les tiges.

 37 ¶ And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.

38 Et il mit les tiges qu’il avait pelées face aux troupeaux dans les auges dans les abreuvoirs afin que lorsque les troupeaux viendraient boire, ils concevraient lorsqu’ils viendraient boire.

 38 And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.

39 Et les troupeaux concevaient à la vue des tiges, et mettaient bas du cheptel rayé, marqueté et tacheté.

 39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.

40 Et Jacob sépara les agneaux, et plaça la face des troupeaux vers ce qui était rayé, et tout ce qui était brun dans le troupeau de Laban ; et il mit ses troupeaux à part, et ne les mit pas avec le bétail de Laban.

 40 And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban’s cattle.

41 Et il arrivait toutes les fois que le bétail plus vigoureux concevait, que Jacob mettait les tiges dans les auges devant les yeux du bétail, afin qu’il puisse concevoir parmi les tiges.

 41 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.

42 Mais lorsque le bétail était chétif, il ne les mettait pas: ainsi les plus chétifs étaient pour Laban, et les plus vigoureux pour Jacob.

 42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.

43 Et l’homme s’accrut extrêmement, et eut beaucoup de bétail, des servantes et des serviteurs, des chameaux et des ânes.

 43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.
