1 Malheur à la couronne de fierté, aux ivrognes d'Ephraim (Éphraïm), dont la glorieuse beauté n'est qu'une fleur fanée, ceux qui sont sur le sommet de la grasse vallée sont surmontés par le vin !

 1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

2 Voici, le Seigneur possède un fort et puissant homme, semblable à une tempête de grêle, et à un tourbillon destructeur, semblable à une crue de puissantes eaux débordantes, qu'iI abattra sur la terre avec la main.

 2 Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

3 La couronne de fierté, les ivrognes d'Ephraim (Éphraïm) seront piétinés ;

 3 The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:

4 Et la glorieuse beauté, qui est sur le sommet de la grasse vallée ne sera qu'une fleur fanée, et comme un fruit précoce avant l'été ; lequel quand celui qui regarde le voit, et sitôt qu'il est dans sa main, il l'avale.

 4 And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

5 ¶ En ce jour-là, le SEIGNEUR des armées sera une couronne de gloire et un diadème de beauté pour le résidu de son peuple,

 5 ¶ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,

6 Et pour un esprit de jugement pour celui qui est assis en jugement, et pour puissance pour ceux qui repoussent la bataille jusqu'à la porte.

 6 And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.

7 Mais eux aussi se sont égarés à cause du vin, et se sont écartés du chemin par la boisson forte ; le prêtre et le prophète se sont égarés par la boisson forte, ils ont été engloutis par le vin, ils se sont écartés du chemin par la boisson forte ; ils s'égarent dans leur vision, ils trébuchent dans le jugement.

 7 ¶ But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

8 Car toutes les tables sont pleines de vomissement et de saleté, si bien qu'il n'y a plus de place propre.

 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

9 ¶ À qui enseignera-t-il la connaissance ? et à qui fera-t-il comprendre la doctrine ? ceux qui sont sevrés du lait, et retirés du sein ?

 9 ¶ Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

10 Car précepte doit être sur précepte, précepte sur précepte, ligne sur ligne, ligne sur ligne, un peu ici, et un peu là.

 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

11 Car par des lèvres bégayantes et par une autre langue il parlera à ce peuple.

 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

12 Auquel il avait dit : C'est ici le repos, avec lequel vous pourrez faire reposer celui qui est fatigué et c'est ici le rafraîchissement ; cependant ils n'ont pas voulu entendre.

 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

13 Mais la parole du SEIGNEUR a été pour eux précepte sur précepte, précepte sur précepte, ligne sur ligne, ligne sur ligne ; un peu ici, et un peu là ; afin qu'ils puissent marcher et reculer, et qu'ils soient brisés, et qu'ils soient pris au piège, et pris.

 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

14 ¶ C'est pourquoi, entendez la parole du SEIGNEUR, vous hommes sarcastiques, qui gouvernez ce peuple qui est à Jérusalem.

 14 ¶ Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.

15 Car vous avez dit : Nous avons fait une alliance avec la mort, et avec l'enfer nous avons un contrat ; quand le fléau débordant passera, il ne viendra pas sur nous ; car nous avons fait du mensonge notre refuge, et nous nous sommes cachés sous la fausseté.

 15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

16 ¶ C'est pourquoi ainsi dit le Seigneur DIEU Voici, je place en Zion, pour fondement, une pierre éprouvée, une précieuse pierre de coin, un fondement sûr ; celui qui croit ne se hâtera pas.

 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

17 Je place aussi le jugement pour cordeau et la rectitude pour fil à plomb ; et la grêle balayera le refuge de mensonge, et les eaux inonderont l'endroit caché.

 17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

18 ¶ Et votre alliance avec la mort sera annulée, et votre contrat avec l'enfer ne tiendra pas ; quand le fléau débordant passera, vous serez piétinés par lui.

 18 ¶ And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

19 Dès qu'il passera, il vous emportera ; car matin après matin, il traversera, de jour et de nuit, et ce sera une humiliation que de seulement en entendre la rumeur.

 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

20 Car le lit est trop court pour qu'un homme s'y étende, et la couverture trop étroite, quand on voudra s'envelopper.

 20 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

21 Car le SEIGNEUR se lèvera, comme au mont Perazim (Pératsim) ; il sera courroucé, comme dans la vallée de Gibeon (Gabaon), pour qu'il puisse faire son œuvre, son œuvre inaccoutumée, et pour mener à bien son action, son action inaccoutumée.

 21 For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

22 Maintenant donc ne soyez pas moqueurs, de peur que vos liens ne soient renforcés ; car j'ai entendu du Seigneur DIEU des armées qu'une destruction est même déterminée sur toute la terre.

 22 Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.

23 ¶ Prêtez l'oreille, et écoutez ma voix ; prêtez attention, et écoutez mon allocution.

 23 ¶ Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.

24 Est-ce que le laboureur laboure toute la journée pour semer ? N'ouvre-t-il pas et ne casse-t-il pas les mottes de sa terre ?

 24 Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?

25 Quand il en a aplani la surface, n'y sème-t-il pas la vesce, et n'y répand-il pas le cumin, et ne met-il pas le meilleur blé et l'orge désigné, et le seigle dans leurs sillons ?

 25 When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?

26 Parce que son Dieu l'instruit et l'enseigne ce qu'il faut faire.

 26 For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.

27 Car la vesce n'est pas battue avec un instrument à battre, de même on ne fait pas tourner la roue du chariot sur le cumin ; mais la vesce est battue avec une verge et le cumin avec un bâton.

 27 For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.

28 Le pain grain est broyé, parce qu'il ne le battra pas toujours, ni ne l'écrasera avec la roue de son chariot, ni ne l'écrasera avec ses cavaliers.

 28 Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.

29 Ceci aussi procède du SEIGNEUR des armées, qui est merveilleux en conseil et excellent en exécution.

 29 This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
