1 Or il arriva, en la quatorzième année du roi Hezekiah, que Sennacherib (Sanchérib), roi d'Assyrie, monta contre toutes les villes fortes de Judah et les prit.

 1 Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.

2 Et le roi d'Assyrie envoya Rabshakeh, de Lachish à Jérusalem, vers le roi Hezekiah (Ezéchias)(Ézéchias), avec une grande armée. Et il se tint près du conduit de l'étang supérieur, sur la route du champ du foulon.

 2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field.

3 Puis vinrent à lui, Eliakim, fils de Hilkiah, qui était intendant de la maison, ainsi que Shebna, le scribe, et Joah, fils d'Asaph, le greffier.

 3 Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.

4 ¶ Et Rabshakeh leur dit : Dites maintenant à Hezekiah (Ézéchias) : Ainsi dit le grand roi, le roi d'Assyrie : Quelle est cette confiance en laquelle tu te confies ?

 4 ¶ And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

5 Je dis : Dis-tu (mais ce ne sont là que de vaines paroles) : J'ai conseil et pvigueur pour la guerre ; maintenant en qui te confies-tu, que tu te rebelles contre moi ?

 5 I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

6 Voici, tu te confies en ce bâton de roseau cassé, en l'Égypte, sur lequel si un homme s'y appuie, il lui traversera la main et la percera ainsi est Pharaon, roi d'Égypte, pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui.

 6 Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

7 Mais si tu me dis : Nous nous confions en le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu, n'est-ce pas lui dont les hauts lieux et les autels Hezekiah (Ezéchias) a ôté, et a dit à Judah et à Jérusalem : vous adorerez devant cet autel-ci ?

 7 But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?

8 Maintenant donc donne des cautions, je te prie, à mon maître, le roi d'Assyrie, et je te donnerai deux mille chevaux, si tu peux de ton côté fournir des cavaliers pour les monter.

 8 Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

9 Et comment ferais-tu détourner le visage du moindre capitaine d'entre les serviteurs de mon maître, et faire confiance en l'Égypte, pour trouver des chariots et des cavaliers ?

 9 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

10 Suis-je maintenant donc monté sans le SEIGNEUR, contre ce pays, pour le détruire ? le SEIGNEUR m'a dit : Monte contre ce pays, et détruis-le.

 10 And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

11 ¶ Alors Eliakim, Shebna et Joah dirent à Rabshakeh (Rabshakeh) : Parle, je te prie, à tes serviteurs en langage syrien, car nous le comprenons ; et ne nous parle pas dans la langue des Juifs, à l'oreille du peuple qui est sur la muraille.

 11 ¶ Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

12 ¶ Mais Rabshakeh (Rabshakeh) dit : Mon maître m'a-t-il envoyé vers ton maître, et vers toi, pour dire ces paroles ? Ne m'a-t-il pas envoyé vers les hommes qui se tiennent sur la muraille, afin qu'ils puissent manger leurs propres excréments et boivent leur propre urine avec vous ?

 12 ¶ But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?

13 Puis Rabshakeh (Rabshakeh) se leva, et s'écria à haute voix dans la langue des Juifs, et dit : Vous entendez les paroles du grand roi, le roi d'Assyrie.

 13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

14 Ainsi dit le roi : Qu'Hezekiah (Ezéchias) ne vous trompe pas, car il ne pourra pas vous délivrer.

 14 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.

15 Et qu'Hezekiah (Ezéchias) ne vous fasse pas mettre votre confiance en le SEIGNEUR, disant : Le SEIGNEUR assurément nous délivrera ; cette ville ne sera pas livrée en la main du roi d'Assyrie.

 15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

16 Ne prêtez pas attention à Hezekiah (Ezéchias). Car ainsi dit le roi d'Assyrie : Faites un accord avec moi par un présent, et sortez vers moi, et vous mangerez chacun de sa vigne et chacun de son figuier, et vous boirez chacun l'eau de sa citerne ;

 16 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;

17 Jusqu'à ce que je vienne et que je vous emmène dans un pays pareil à votre pays, un pays de grain et de vin, un pays de pain et de vignes.

 17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

18 Prenez garde de peur qu'Hezekiah (Ezéchias) ne vous séduise, disant : Le SEIGNEUR nous délivrera. Les dieux des nations ont-ils délivré chacun son pays de la main du roi d'Assyrie ?

 18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

19 Où sont les dieux de Hamath et d'Arphad ? Où sont les dieux de Sepharvaim ? Et ont-ils délivré Samarie de ma main ?

 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

20 Qui sont ceux d'entre tous les dieux de ces pays-là, qui aient délivré leur pays de ma main, pour que le SEIGNEUR délivre Jérusalem de ma main ?

 20 Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

21 Mais ils se turent et ne lui répondirent pas un mot ; car le commandement du roi était, disant : Ne lui répondez pas.

 21 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

22 ¶ Alors Eliakim, le fils de Hilkiah, intendant de la maison, et Shebna, le scribe, et Joah, le fils d'Asaph, le greffier, vinrent vers Hezekiah (Ézéchias), les vêtements déchirés, et lui rapportèrent les paroles de Rabshakeh (Rabshakeh).

 22 ¶ Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
