1 Courez ça et là, à travers les rues de Jérusalem, et regardez maintenant, et sachez et cherchez dans ses larges espaces, si vous pouvez trouver un homme, s’il y a quelqu’un qui exécute jugement, qui cherche la vérité, et je pardonnerai à la ville.

1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.

2 Et même s’ils disent : Le SEIGNEUR est vivant ; certainement ils jurent faussement.

 2 And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.

3 Ô SEIGNEUR, tes yeux ne sont-ils pas sur la vérité ? Tu les as frappés, mais ils n’en sont pas affligés ; tu les as consumés, mais ils ont refusé de recevoir la correction : ils ont rendu leurs visages plus durs qu’un rocher ; ils ont refusé de retourner.

 3 O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

4 C’est pourquoi je disais : Certainement ceux-ci sont pauvres ; ils sont insensés, car ils ne connaissent pas le chemin du SEIGNEUR, ni le jugement de leur Dieu.

 4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.

5 Je m’en irai vers les grands hommes et je leur parlerai ; car ils ont connu le chemin du SEIGNEUR, et le jugement de leur Dieu ; mais ceux-là ont entièrement brisé le joug, et rompu les liens.

 5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.

6 C’est pourquoi un lion de la forêt les tuera, et un loup du soir les dépouillera, un léopard fera le guet sur leurs villes ; quiconque en sortira, sera mis en pièces, parce que leurs transgressions sont nombreuses, et leurs apostats se sont accrus.

 6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.

7 ¶ Comment te pardonnerais-je pour cela ? Tes enfants m’ont abandonné, et ont juré par ceux qui ne sont pas des dieux ; quand je les ai rassasiés, ils ont alors commis adultère ; et sont allés en troupes dans les maisons de prostituées.

 7 ¶ How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.

8 Ils étaient comme des chevaux bien nourris le matin ; chacun hennissait après la femme de son voisin.

 8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife.

9 Ne visiterai-je pas pour ces choses-là, dit le SEIGNEUR, et mon âme ne se vengerait-elle pas d’une nation comme celle-là ?

 9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

10 ¶ Montez sur ses murailles, et détruisez ; mais ne les achevez pas jusqu’au bout ; ôtez ses créneaux, car ils ne sont pas au SEIGNEUR.

 10 ¶ Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’S.

11 Car la maison d’Israël et la maison de Juda ont agi très perfidement envers moi, dit le SEIGNEUR.

 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.

12 Ils ont renié le SEIGNEUR, et ont dit : Ce n’est pas lui, et le mal ne viendra pas sur nous ; nous ne verrons ni l’épée ni la famine.

 12 They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

13 Et les prophètes ne seront que du vent, et la parole n’est pas en eux ; ainsi leur sera-t-il fait.

 13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

14 C’est pourquoi, ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR, Dieu des armées : Parce que vous avez prononcé cette parole, voici, je ferai mes paroles devenir comme du feu dans ta bouche, et ce peuple sera comme du bois, et le feu les consumera.

 14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

15 Voici, je m’en vais faire venir contre vous une nation lointaine, ô maison d’Israël, dit le SEIGNEUR ; c’est une puissante nation, c’est une ancienne nation, une nation dont tu ne connais pas la langue, et dont tu ne comprends pas ce qu’elle dira.

 15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

16 Son carquois est comme un sépulcre ouvert ; ils sont tous de puissants hommes.

 16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

17 Et ils dévoreront ta moisson et ton pain, que tes fils et tes filles devaient manger ; ils dévoreront tes moutons et tes bœufs ; ils dévoreront tes vignes et tes figuiers ; ils réduiront à la pauvreté par l’épée, tes villes fortifiées dans lesquelles tu te confiais.

 17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.

18 Toutefois, en ces jours-là, dit le SEIGNEUR, je ne vous achèverai pas entièrement.

 18 Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.

19 ¶ Et il arrivera que, quand vous direz : Pourquoi le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu nous fait-il toutes ces choses ? Tu leur diras ainsi : Comme vous m’avez abandonné, et que vous avez servi des dieux étrangers dans votre pays, ainsi servirez-vous les étrangers dans un pays qui n’est pas vôtre.

 19 ¶ And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

20 Déclarez ceci à la maison de Jacob, et publiez-le en Juda, disant :

 20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,

21 Entendez maintenant ceci, ô peuple insensé et sans intelligence, qui avez des yeux et ne voyez pas, des oreilles et n’entendez pas.

 21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:

22 Ne me craindrez-vous pas ? dit le SEIGNEUR, ne tremblerez-vous pas en ma présence, moi qui ai mis le sable pour limite à la mer par un décret perpétuel, qu’elle ne passera pas, et même si ses vagues s’agitent, toutefois elles ne prévaudront pas ; si elles grondent, toutefois elles ne la dépasseront pas.

 22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

23 Mais ce peuple a un cœur récalcitrant et rebelle ; ils se sont révoltés, et sont partis ;

 23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.

24 Ils ne disent pas non plus dans leur cœur : Craignons maintenant le SEIGNEUR, notre Dieu, qui donne la pluie, la première et la dernière, en sa saison ; il nous réserve les semaines fixées pour la moisson.

 24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

25 ¶ Vos iniquités ont détourné ces choses, et vos péchés ont retenu ces bonnes choses loin de vous.

 25 ¶ Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.

26 Car il se trouve parmi mon peuple des hommes méchants ; ils sont aux aguets, comme celui qui met des filets ; ils posent un piège, ils attrapent des hommes.

 26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

27 Comme une cage est remplie d’oiseaux, ainsi leurs maisons sont remplies de tromperie ; par ce moyen, ils sont devenus grands et se sont enrichis.

 27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.

28 Ils sont engraissés, et sont luisants ; oui, ils surpassent les actions des méchants, ils ne jugent pas la cause, la cause de l’orphelin, toutefois ils prospèrent ; et ils ne jugent pas le droit des nécessiteux.

 28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

29 Ne visiterai-je pas pour ces choses-là ? dit le SEIGNEUR ; et mon âme ne se vengerait-elle pas d’une nation comme celle-là ?

 29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

30 ¶ Une chose étonnante et horrible est commise dans le pays ;

 30 ¶ A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;

31 Les prophètes prophétisent avec fausseté, et les prêtres dirigent par leur pouvoir, et mon peuple aime l’avoir ainsi ; et que ferez-vous donc à la fin ?

 31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
