1 La parole du SEIGNEUR qui vint à Jeremiah (Jérémie), disant :

 1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

2 Lève-toi, et descends dans la maison du potier ; et là, je te ferai entendre mes paroles.

 2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 Je descendis donc dans la maison du potier, et voici, il faisait son ouvrage sur les roues.

 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

4 Et le vase qu’il faisait avec de l’argile était défectueux dans la main du potier ; et il en refit un autre vase, comme il sembla bon au potier de le faire.

 4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 Alors la parole du SEIGNEUR me vint, disant :

 5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

6 Ô maison d’Israël, ne puis-je pas faire avec vous comme ce potier ? dit le SEIGNEUR. Voici, comme l’argile est dans la main du potier, ainsi êtes-vous dans ma main, ô maison d’Israël.

 6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

7 Soudain je parlerai au sujet d’une nation, et au sujet d’un royaume, pour arracher, et pour démolir et pour le détruire ;

 7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

8 Si cette nation contre laquelle j’aurai parlé se détourne du mal ; je me repentirai du mal que je pensais leur faire.

 8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

9 Et à cet instant je parlerai au sujet d’une nation, et au sujet d’un royaume, pour le bâtir et pour le planter,

 9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

10 Si elle fait ce qui est mal à mes yeux, qu’elle n’obéit pas à ma voix, alors je me repentirai du bien que j’avais dit que je lui ferais.

 10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

11 ¶ Maintenant donc va et parle aux hommes de Juda, et aux habitants de Jérusalem, disant : Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : Voici, je projette du mal contre vous, et je forme un dessein contre vous. Que chacun abandonne son mauvais chemin, et corrigez vos chemins et vos actions.

 11 ¶ Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

12 Et ils dirent : Il n’y a aucun espoir, mais nous marcherons selon nos stratagèmes, et nous ferons chacun selon l’imagination de son mauvais cœur.

 12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

13 C’est pourquoi ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : Demandez maintenant aux nations, qui a entendu de telles choses ? La vierge d’Israël a fait une très horrible chose.

 13 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

14 Laissera-t-on la neige du Liban qui vient du roc des champs ? Ou délaisserait-on les eaux froides et ruisselantes qui viennent d’un autre lieu ?

 14 Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?

15 Parce que mon peuple m’a oublié, ils ont brûlé de l’encens à ce qui n’est que vanité, et cela les a fait trébucher dans leurs chemins, quitter les anciens sentiers, pour marcher dans les sentiers, d’un chemin non battu,

 15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

16 Pour faire de leur pays une désolation, et un sifflement de désapprobation perpétuel, quiconque passent par là sera étonné et secouera sa tête.

 16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.

17 Je les disperserai devant l’ennemi, comme par le vent d’Est ; je leur montrerai le dos, et non pas la face, au jour de leur calamité.

 17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

18 ¶ Et ils ont dit : Venez, et méditons des stratagèmes contre Jeremiah (Jérémie), car la loi ne périra pas chez le prêtre, ni le conseil chez le sage, ni la parole chez le prophète. Venez, et frappons-le de la langue, et ne soyons pas attentifs à aucune de ses paroles.

 18 ¶ Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

19 Fais attention à moi, ô SEIGNEUR, et écoute la voix de ceux qui contestent avec moi.

 19 Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

20 Le mal sera-t-il rendu pour le bien ? Car ils ont creusé une fosse pour mon âme. Souviens-toi que je me suis tenu devant toi, afin de parler en bien pour eux, et afin de détourner d’eux ta colère.

 20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

21 C’est pourquoi livre leurs enfants à la famine, et verse leur sang par le moyen de l’épée ; et que leurs femmes soient privées d’enfants et soient veuves ; et laisse leurs maris se faire mettre à mort, et laisse leurs jeunes hommes se faire abattre par l’épée dans la bataille.

 21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

22 Qu’on entende un cri de leurs maisons, quand tu auras fait venir subitement une troupe contre eux ; car ils ont creusé une fosse pour me prendre ; et ils ont caché des pièges pour mes pieds.

 22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

23 Cependant toi, le SEIGNEUR, tu connais tout leur conseil contre moi, pour me tuer ; n’oublie pas leur iniquité, et n’efface pas leur péché de ta vue ; mais qu’ils soient renversés devant toi ; agis ainsi contre eux au temps de ton courroux.

 23 Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
