1 Or, il arriva, quand Adonizedec, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Joshua (Josué) avait pris Aï, et l’avait entièrement détruite, qu’il avait fait à Aï et à son roi, comme il avait fait à Jéricho et à son roi, et comment les habitants de Gibeon (Gabaon) avaient fait la paix avec Israël, et étaient parmi eux,

 1 Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

2 Qu’iIs eurent grande peur, parce que Gibeon (Gabaon) était une grande ville, comme l’une des villes royales ; et parce que elle était plus grande qu’Aï, et tous ses hommes étaient puissants.

 2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

3 C’est pourquoi Adonizedec (Adoni-Tsédek), roi de Jérusalem, envoya vers Hoham roi de Hébron, et vers Piram roi de Jarmuth, et vers Japhia roi de Lachish (Lakis), et vers Debir roi d’Eglon, disant :

 3 Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 Montez vers moi, et aidez-moi afin que nous puissions frapper Gibeon (Gabaon) ; car elle a fait la paix avec Joshua (Josué) et avec les enfants d’Israël.

 4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

5 C’est pourquoi les cinq rois des Amorites (Amoréens), le roi de Jérusalem, le roi de Hébron, le roi de Jarmuth, le roi de Lachish et le roi d’Eglon, s’assemblèrent et montèrent, eux et toutes leurs armées, et campèrent contre Gibeon (Gabaon), et lui firent la guerre.

 5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

6 ¶ Et les hommes de Gibeon (Gabaon) envoyèrent à Joshua (Josué), au camp de Gilgal (Guilgal), disant : Ne retire pas ta main de tes serviteurs ; monte promptement vers nous, et sauve-nous, et aide-nous ; car tous les rois des Amorites, qui demeurent dans la montagne, se sont assemblés contre nous.

 6 ¶ And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

7 Joshua (Josué) monta donc de Gilgal (Guilgal), lui et tout le peuple de guerre avec lui, et tous les hommes puissants et vaillants.

 7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8 ¶ Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Joshua (Josué) : N’aie pas peur d’eux, car je les ai livrés en ta main, il n’y aura aucun homme qui subsistera devant toi.

 8 ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

9 Joshua (Josué) donc vint subitement à eux, et il monta de Gilgal (Guilgal) toute la nuit.

 9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

10 Et le SEIGNEUR les mit en déroute devant Israël, et les tua en un grand carnage à Gibeon (Gabaon), et les poursuivit par le chemin qui monte à Bethhoron, et les frappa jusqu’à Azekah, et jusqu’à Makkedah.

 10 And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

11 Et il arriva, comme ils fuyaient devant Israël, et qu’ils étaient à la descente de Bethhoron, que le SEIGNEUR jeta du ciel sur eux de grosses pierres, jusqu’à Azekah, et ils moururent ; il y en plus qui moururent par les pierres de grêle que ceux que les enfants d’Israël tuèrent avec l’épée.

 11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

12 ¶ Alors Joshua (Josué) parla au SEIGNEUR, le jour où le SEIGNEUR livra les Amorites (Amoréens) aux enfants d’Israël, et il dit en présence d’Israël : Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gibeon (Gabaon), et toi Lune, sur la vallée d’Aijalon.

 12 ¶ Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 Et le soleil s’arrêta, et la lune demeura, jusqu’à ce que le peuple se soit vengé de ses ennemis. N’est-ce pas écrit dans le livre de Jasher ? Le soleil donc s’arrêta au milieu du ciel, et ne se hâta pas de descendre, pendant environ un jour entier.

 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

14 Et il n’y a pas eu de jour comme celui-là, ni avant ni après, où le SEIGNEUR ait écouté la voix d’un homme ; car le SEIGNEUR combattait pour Israël.

 14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

15 ¶ Et Joshua (Josué), et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp, à Gilgal (Guilgal).

 15 ¶ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16 Mais les cinq rois s’enfuirent, et se cachèrent dans une caverne, à Makkedah.

 16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.

17 Et on le rapporta à Joshua (Josué) en disant : Les cinq rois ont été trouvés cachés dans une caverne à Makkedah.

 17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

18 Alors Joshua (Josué) dit : Roulez de grandes pierres à l’entrée de la caverne, et mettez près d’elle des hommes pour les garder.

 18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:

19 Et ne restez pas là, mais poursuivez vos ennemis, et coupez les de leur arrière garde ; ne les laissez pas entrer dans leurs villes ; car le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu les a livrés en votre main.

 19 And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

20 Et il arriva lorsque Joshua (Josué) et les enfants d’Israël eurent achevé d’en faire un très grand massacre, jusques à les détruire entièrement, et que ceux d’entre eux qui échappèrent, se soient retirés dans les villes fortifiées,

 20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.

21 Et tout le peuple retourna en paix au camp, vers Joshua (Josué), à Makkedah ; et personne ne remua la langue contre aucun des enfants d’Israël.

 21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

22 Alors Joshua (Josué) dit : Ouvrez l’entrée de la caverne, et amenez-moi ces cinq rois hors de la caverne.

 22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.

23 Et ils firent ainsi, et amenèrent hors de la caverne, ces cinq rois, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d’Hébron, le roi de Jarmuth, le roi de Lachish (Lakis) et le roi d’Eglon.

 23 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

24 Et il arriva, lorsqu’ils eurent amené ces rois à Joshua (Josué), que Joshua (Josué) appela tous les hommes d’Israël, et dit aux capitaines des hommes de guerre qui étaient allés avec lui : Approchez-vous, mettez vos pieds sur le cou de ces rois. Et ils s’approchèrent, et mirent les pieds sur leurs cous.

 24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

25 Et Joshua (Josué) leur dit : N’ayez pas peur et ne soyez pas effrayés, soyez forts et prenez courage ; car le SEIGNEUR fera ainsi à tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattez.

 25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

26 Après cela Joshua (Josué) les frappa et les tua, et les fit pendre à cinq arbres, et ils demeurèrent pendus aux arbres jusqu’au soir.

 26 And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 Et il arriva au temps où le soleil allait descendant, que Joshua (Josué) commanda, et on les descendît des arbres ; et on les jeta dans la caverne où ils s’étaient cachés, et on mit à l’entrée de la caverne de grandes pierres, qui y sont demeurées jusqu’à ce jour même.

 27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.

28 ¶ Et Joshua (Josué) prit ce même jour Makkedah, et la frappa du tranchant de l’épée ; et détruisit entièrement son roi, et toutes les âmes qui s’y trouvaient ; il n’en laissa aucune ; et il fit au roi de Makkedah comme il avait fait au roi de Jéricho.

 28 ¶ And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

29 Puis Joshua (Josué), et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Makkedah à Libnah, et se battit contre Libnah ;

 29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

30 Et le SEIGNEUR la livra aussi, ainsi que son roi en la main d’Israël, et il la frappa du tranchant de l’épée, ainsi que toutes les âmes qui y étaient ; il n’en laissa aucune ; et il fit à son roi comme il avait fait au roi de Jéricho.

 30 And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.

31 ¶ Et Joshua (Josué), et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Libnah à Lachish, et campa contre elle et se battit contre elle ;

 31 ¶ And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

32 Et le SEIGNEUR livra Lachish en la main d’Israël, qui la prit le deuxième jour et la frappa du tranchant de l’épée, avec toutes les âmes qui y étaient, selon tout ce qu’il avait fait à Libnah.

 32 And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

33 ¶ Alors Horam, roi de Gezer (Guézer), monta pour secourir Lachish, et Joshua (Josué) le frappa, lui et son peuple, jusqu’à ne lui laisser aucun survivant.

 33 ¶ Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

34 ¶ Puis Joshua (Josué), et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Lachish (Lakish) à Eglon ; et ils campèrent contre elle et se battit contre elle ;

 34 ¶ And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

35 Et ils la prirent ce même jour, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée ; et il Joshua (Josué) détruisit entièrement ce jour-là toutes les âmes qui y étaient, selon tout ce qu’il avait fait à Lachish.

 35 And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

36 Et Joshua (Josué), et tout Israël avec lui, monta d’Eglon à Hébron, et ils se battirent contre elle ;

 36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

37 Et ils la prirent et la frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée, et son roi et toutes ses villes, et toutes les âmes qui y étaient ; il n’en laissa aucune, selon tout ce qu’il avait fait à Eglon ; mais la détruisit entièrement, avec toutes les âmes qui y étaient.

 37 And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.

38 ¶ Puis Joshua (Josué) retourna, ainsi que tout Israël avec lui, vers Debir, et se battit contre elle ;

 38 ¶ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:

39 Et il la prit avec son roi et toutes ses villes ; et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée, et détruisirent entièrement toutes les âmes qui y étaient ; il n’en laissa aucune ; comme il avait fait à Hébron, ainsi il fit à Debir et à son roi, et comme il avait aussi fait à Libnah et à son roi.

 39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.

40 ¶ Ainsi Joshua (Josué) frappa tout le pays, les collines, le sud, le vallon et les sources, et tous leurs rois ; il ne laissa personne ; mais détruisit entièrement tout ce qui respirait, comme le SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël, l’avait commandé.

 40 ¶ So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.

41 Et Joshua (Josué) les frappa depuis Kadesbarnea (Kadès-Barnéa) jusqu’à Gaza, et tout le pays de Goshen, jusqu’à Gibeon (Gabaon).

 41 And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

42 Et Joshua (Josué) prit en une seule fois tous ces rois et leur pays, parce que le SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël, combattait pour Israël.

 42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.

43 Et Joshua (Josué), et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp, à Gilgal (Guilgal).

 43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
