1 Et il arriva, lorsque tous les rois, qui étaient de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, dans les collines et dans les vallées, et sur tous les confins de la grande mer face au Liban, le Hittite , l’Amorite (Amoréen), le Canaanite (Cananéen), le Perizzite (Phérézien), le Hivite (Hévien), et le Jebusite (Jébusien), entendirent ces choses,

 1 And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

2 Qu’ils s’assemblèrent tous pour se battre avec Joshua (Josué) et avec Israël, d’un commun accord.

 2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3 ¶ Et lorsque les habitants de Gibeon (Gabaon) apprirent ce que Joshua (Josué) avait fait à Jéricho et à Aï,

 3 ¶ And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

4 Ils usèrent de ruse, et se mirent en chemin, et se déguisèrent comme s‘ils étaient les ambassadeurs, et prirent de vieux sacs sur leurs ânes, et de vieilles outres à vin, trouées et recousues,

 4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5 Et de vielles chaussures raccommodées à leurs pieds, et de vieux vêtements sur eux ; et tout le pain de leur provision était sec et moisi.

 5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

6 Et ils allèrent vers Joshua (Josué), au camp de Gilgal (Guilgal), et lui dirent, à lui et aux hommes d’Israël : Nous sommes venus d’un pays lointain ; maintenant donc, faites alliance avec nous.

 6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

7 Et les hommes d’Israël répondirent à ces Hittites (Héthiens) : Peut-être que vous demeurez parmi nous ; et comment ferrions-nous alliance avec vous ?

 7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?

8 Et ils dirent à Joshua (Josué) : Nous sommes tes serviteur. Et Joshua (Josué) leur dit : Qui êtes-vous, et d’où venez-vous ?

 8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

9 Ils lui répondirent : Tes serviteurs sont venus d’un pays fort lointain, à cause du nom du SEIGNEUR ton Dieu ; car nous avons entendu sa renommée, et tout ce qu’il a fait en Égypte,

 9 And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

10 Et tout ce qu’il a fait aux deux rois des Amorites (Amoréens) qui étaient au-delà du Jourdain, à Sihon roi de Heshbon (Hesbon), et à Og roi de Bashan, qui était à Ashtaroth.

 10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

11 C’est pourquoi nos anciens, et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont parlé, disant : Prenez avec vous des provisions pour le voyage, et allez au-devant d’eux, et dites-leur : Nous sommes vos serviteurs, c’est pourquoi maintenant faites alliance avec nous.

 11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

12 C’est ici notre pain, nous l’avons pris chaud de nos maisons, pour notre provision, le jour où nous sommes sortis pour venir vers vous, et maintenant voici, il est sec et il est moisi ;

 12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

13 Et ces outres de vin que nous avons remplies, étaient neuves, et voici, elles se sont rompues ; et nos vêtements et nos chaussures se sont usées à cause du très long voyage.

 13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

14 Alors les hommes d’Israël prirent de leurs provisions, et ne demandèrent pas conseil à la bouche du SEIGNEUR.

 14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

15 Et Joshua (Josué) fit la paix avec eux, et fit alliance avec eux, pour les laisser en vie ; et les princes de la congrégation leur en firent serment.

 15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

16 ¶ Et il arriva, après trois jours qu’ils eurent fait alliance avec eux, qu’ils apprirent qu’ils étaient leurs voisins, et qu’ils demeuraient parmi eux ;

 16 ¶ And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 Et les enfants d’Israël partirent, et arrivèrent en leurs villes le troisième jour. Or, leurs villes étaient Gibeon (Gabaon), et Chephirah (Képhira), et Beeroth et Kirjathjearim (Kiriath-Jéarim).

 17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.

18 Et les enfants d’Israël ne les frappèrent pas, parce que les princes de la congrégation leur en avaient fait serment par le SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël. Et toute la congrégation murmura contre les princes.

 18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19 Alors tous les princes dirent à toute la congrégation : Nous leur avons fait serment par le SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël ; maintenant nous ne pouvons pas les toucher.

 19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

20 Nous leur ferons ceci ; nous les laisserons vivre, de peur que la colère soit sur nous, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait.

 20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

21 Et les princes leur dirent : Laissons les vivre ; mais qu’ils soient coupeurs de bois et puiseurs d’eau pour toute la congrégation, comme les princes le leur avaient promis.

 21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

22 ¶ Et Joshua (Josué) les appela, et leur parla, en disant : Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés, en disant : Nous sommes fort éloignés de vous ; tandis que vous demeuriez parmi nous ?

 22 ¶ And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

23 Maintenant donc, vous êtes maudits, et aucun de vous ne cessera d’être dans la servitude, coupeurs de bois et puiseurs d’eau pour la maison de mon Dieu.

 23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 Et Ils répondirent à Joshua (Josué), et dirent : Parce qu’il a été assurément rapporté à tes serviteurs, comment le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu avait commandé à son serviteur Moïse, de vous donner tout le pays et d’exterminer tous les habitants du pays devant vous, c’est pourquoi nous avons grandement craint pour nos vies à cause de vous, et nous avons fait cette chose.

 24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25 Et maintenant, voici, nous sommes en ta main ; fais comme il te semble bon et droit de nous faire.

 25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

26 Il fit ainsi pour eux, et les délivra de la main des enfants d’Israël, et ils ne les tuèrent pas.

 26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

27 Et Joshua (Josué) les établit, en ce jour-là, coupeurs de bois et puiseurs d’eau, pour la congrégation et pour l’autel du SEIGNEUR, même jusqu’à ce jour, dans le lieu qu’il choisirait.

 27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
