1 Et Abimelech (Abimélec), le fils de Jerubbaal, alla à Shechem (Sichem) vers les frères de sa mère, et s’entretint avec eux, et avec toute la famille de la maison du père de sa mère, disant :

 1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

2 Dites, je vous prie, aux oreilles de tous les hommes de Shechem (Sichem) : Lequel est le meilleur pour vous, que tous les fils de Jerubbaal, qui sont soixante-dix personnes, dominent sur vous, ou qu'un seul domine sur vous ? Souvenez-vous aussi que je suis votre os et votre chair.

 2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

3 Et les frères de sa mère dirent pour lui aux oreilles de tous les hommes de Shechem (Sichem), toutes ces paroles ; et leurs cœurs s’inclinèrent pour suivre Abimelech (Abimélec), car ils dirent : Il est notre frère.

 3 And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

4 Et ils lui donnèrent soixante-dix pièces d'argent prises de la maison de Baalberith, avec lesquelles Abimelech (Abimélec) engagea des hommes vaniteux et sans scrupules, qui le suivirent.

 4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.

5 Et il vint à la maison de son père, à Ophrah, et tua ses frères, les fils de Jerubbaal, soixante-dix hommes sur une seule pierre ; il ne resta que Jotham, le plus jeune fils de Jerubbaal, car il s'était caché.

 5 And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

6 Et tous les hommes de Shechem (Sichem) s'assemblèrent, et toute la maison de Mille, et ils allèrent, et établirent roi Abimelech (Abimélec), près de la plaine du pilier qui était à Shechem (Sichem).

 6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

7 ¶ Et quand on le rapporta à Jotham, il s'en alla, et se tint sur le sommet du mont Gerizim, et il éleva sa voix et cria, et leur dit : Écoutez-moi, vous, hommes de Shechem (Sichem), et que Dieu vous écoute.

 7 ¶ And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

8 Les arbres allèrent un jour pour oindre un roi sur eux ; et ils dirent à l’olivier : Règne sur nous.

 8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.

9 Mais l’olivier leur dit : Devrais-je laisser ma graisse, avec laquelle on honore Dieu et l’homme en moi, et aller pour être promu au-dessus des autres arbres ?

 9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

10 Et les arbres dirent au figuier : Viens, toi, et règne sur nous.

 10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

11 Mais le figuier leur dit : Renoncerais-je à ma douceur et à mon bon fruit, et aller pour être promu au-dessus des autres arbres ?

 11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?

12 Alors les arbres dirent à la vigne : Viens, toi, et règne sur nous.

 12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

13 Et la vigne leur dit : Laisserais-je mon vin, qui réjouit Dieu et l’homme, et aller pour être promu au-dessus des autres arbres ?

 13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

14 Alors tous les arbres dirent à la ronce : Viens, toi, règne sur nous.

 14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

15 Et la ronce dit aux arbres : Si vraiment vous m'oignez roi sur vous, venez, et confiez-vous en mon ombre ; sinon, que le feu sorte des ronces, et dévore les cèdres du Liban.

 15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

16 Maintenant donc, si vous avez agi avec vérité et sincérité en ce que vous avez établi Abimelech (Abimélec) roi, et si vous avez bien agi envers Jerubbaal et sa maison, et si vous lui avez fait selon les agissements de ses mains ;

 16 Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;

17 (Car mon père a combattu pour vous, et a exposé sa vie, et vous a délivrés de la main de Midian (Madian) ;

 17 (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

18 Et vous vous êtes levés aujourd'hui contre la maison de mon père, et vous avez tué ses fils, soixante-dix personnes, sur une seule pierre, et vous avez établi Abimelech (Abimélec), le fils de sa servante, roi sur les hommes de Shechem (Sichem), parce qu'il est votre frère) ;

 18 And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)

19 Si donc vous avez agi avec vérité et sincérité envers Jerubbaal et envers sa maison aujourd’hui, alors réjouissez-vous en Abimelech (Abimélec), et que lui aussi se réjouisse en vous ;

 19 If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

20 Sinon, qu'un feu sorte d'Abimelech (Abimélec), et dévore les hommes de Shechem (Sichem) et la maison de Millo ; et qu'un feu sorte des hommes de Shechem (Sichem) et de la maison de Millo, et dévore Abimelech (Abimélec).

 20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

21 Et Jotham s'échappa et s'enfuit, et alla à Beer, et y demeura, par peur d'Abimelech (Abimélec) son frère.

 21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

22 ¶ Quand Abimelech (Abimélec) eut régné sur Israël, trois ans,

 22 ¶ When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,

23 Alors Dieu envoya un mauvais esprit entre Abimelech (Abimélec) et les hommes de Shechem (Sichem) ; et les hommes de Shechem (Sichem) agirent perfidement envers Abimelech (Abimélec),

 23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

24 Afin que la cruauté faite aux soixante-dix fils de Jerubbaal puisse venir, et que leur sang soit mis sur Abimelech (Abimélec), leur frère, qui les avait tués, et sur les hommes de Shechem (Sichem), qui l’avaient aidé à tuer ses frères.

 24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

25 Et les hommes de Shechem (Sichem) placèrent des hommes en embuscade sur le sommet des montagnes, et ils pillaient tous ceux qui passaient près d'eux le long du chemin ; et cela fut rapporté à Abimelech (Abimélec).

 25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

26 Et Gaal, le fils d', vint avec ses frères, et ils passèrent à Shechem (Sichem) ; et les hommes de Shechem (Sichem) eurent confiance en lui.

 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

27 Et ils allèrent dans les champs, et vendangèrent leurs vignes, et foulèrent les grappes et se réjouirent, et entrèrent dans la maison de leur dieu, et mangèrent et burent, et maudirent Abimelech (Abimélec).

 27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

28 Et Gaal, le fils d'Ebed, dit : Qui est Abimelech (Abimélec), et qui est Shechem (Sichem), que nous le servions ? N'est-il pas fils de Jerubbaal ? Et Zebul n'est-il pas son officier ? Servez les hommes de Hamor, père de Shechem (Sichem) car pourquoi le servirions-nous ?

 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

29 Plût à Dieu que ce peuple soit sous ma main ! Alors j'ôterais Abimelech (Abimélec). Et il dit à Abimelech : Augmente ton armée, et sors.

 29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30 ¶ Et lorsque Zebul le chef de la ville, entendit les paroles de Gaal, le fils d'Ebed, son courroux s'enflamma.

 30 ¶ And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

31 Et il envoya secrètement des messagers à Abimelech (Abimélec), disant : Voici, Gaal, le fils d'Ebed, et ses frères sont venus à Shechem (Sichem) ; et voici, ils arment la ville contre toi.

 31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

32 Maintenant donc, lève-toi de nuit, toi et le peuple qui est avec toi, et tiens-toi en embuscade dans la campagne.

 32 Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

33 Et il arrivera qu’au matin, dès le lever du soleil, tu te lèveras de bonne heure, et tu te jetteras sur la ville ; et voici, lorsque Gaal et le peuple qui est avec lui sortiront contre toi, alors tu lui feras selon que tu en trouveras le moyen.

 33 And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

34 ¶ Et Abimelech (Abimélec) se leva de nuit, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, et ils se tinrent en embuscade contre Shechem (Sichem), en quatre compagnies.

 34 ¶ And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

35 Et Gaal le fils d'Ebed, sortit, et se tint à l’entrée de la porte de la ville ; et Abimelech (Abimélec) et le peuple qui était avec lui se levèrent de l’embuscade.

 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.

36 Et lorsque Gaal vit le peuple, il dit à Zebul : Voici un peuple qui descend du sommet des montagnes. Et Zebul lui dit : Tu vois l’ombre des montagnes comme si c’étaient des hommes.

 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

37 Et Gaal parla encore, et dit : Voici un peuple qui descend du milieu du pays, et une autre compagnie vient par le chemin de la plaine de Meonemin.

 37 And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

38 Alors Zebul lui dit : Où est maintenant ta bouche, avec laquelle tu disais : Qui est Abimelech (Abimélec), pour que nous le servions ? N'est-ce pas là le peuple que tu as méprisé ? Sors maintenant, je te prie, et combats contre eux.

 38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

39 Et Gaal sortit devant les hommes de Shechem (Sichem), et combattit contre Abimelech (Abimélec).

 39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

40 Et Abimelech (Abimélec) le poursuivit, et il s'enfuit devant lui, et beaucoup tombèrent tués jusqu'à l’entrée de la porte.

 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.

41 Et Abimelech (Abimélec) demeura à Arumah ; et Zebul chassa Gaal et ses frères, afin qu'ils ne puissent demeurer à Shechem (Sichem).

 41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

42 Et il arriva le lendemain que le peuple sortit dans la campagne ; et Abimelech (Abimélec) en fut informé.

 42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43 Et il prit le peuple, et les divisa en trois compagnies, et les mit en embuscade dans la campagne. Et il regarda, et voici, le peuple sortait de la ville et il se leva contre eux et les frappa.

 43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.

44 Et Abimelech (Abimélec) et la compagnie qui était avec lui se précipitèrent, et se placèrent à l’entrée de la porte de la ville, et les deux autres compagnies se jetèrent sur tous ceux qui étaient dans les champs et les tuèrent.

 44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.

45 Et Abimelech (Abimélec) combattit contre la ville toute la journée ; et il prit la ville, et tua le peuple qui y était ; et il rasa la ville, et y sema du sel.

 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 ¶ Et lorsque tous les hommes de la tour de Shechem (Sichem) apprirent cela, ils entrèrent dans la place forte de la maison du dieu Berith.

 46 ¶ And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.

47 Et on rapporta à Abimelech (Abimélec) que tous les hommes de la tour de Shechem (Sichem) s'étaient rassemblés.

 47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48 Et Abimelech (Abimélec) monta sur le mont Zalmon, lui et tout le peuple qui était avec lui ; et Abimelech (Abimélec) prit une hache dans sa main et coupa une branche d'arbre, et l’enleva, et la mit sur son épaule, et dit au peuple qui était avec lui : Ce que vous m’avez vu faire, dépêchez-vous, et faites comme j’ai fait.

 48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

49 Et tout le peuple de même coupa chacun sa branche, et ils suivirent Abimelech (Abimélec), et placèrent les branches contre le fort, et y mirent le feu. Si bien que tous les hommes de la tour de Shechem (Sichem) moururent aussi, environ un millier d'hommes et de femmes.

 49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50 ¶ Puis Abimelech (Abimélec) s'en alla à Thebez, et campa contre Thebez, et la prit.

 50 ¶ Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

51 Or il y avait une forte tour à l’intérieur de la ville ; et en laquelle s’enfuirent tous les hommes et toutes les femmes, et tous ceux de la ville ; et ils fermèrent derrière eux, et montèrent sur le toit de la tour.

 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.

52 Et Abimelech (Abimélec) vint jusqu'à la tour, et l’attaqua ; et il s'avança jusqu'à la porte de la tour pour la brûler par le feu ;

 52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

53 Et une certaine femme jeta un morceau de meule de moulin sur la tête d'Abimelech (Abimélec), et lui brisa le crâne.

 53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.

54 Alors il appela en hâte le jeune homme qui portait ses armes, et lui dit : Tire ton épée et tue-moi, pour ne pas qu'on dise de moi : Une femme l’a tué. Et son jeune homme le transperça, et il mourut.

 54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

55 Et quand les hommes d'Israël virent qu'Abimelech (Abimélec) était mort, ils s'en allèrent chacun en son lieu.

 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

56 ¶ Ainsi Dieu rendit à Abimelech (Abimélec) le mal qu'il avait fait à son père en tuant ses soixante-dix frères ;

 56 ¶ Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

57 Et Dieu rendit toute la méchanceté des hommes de Shechem (Sichem) sur leurs têtes ; et la malédiction de Jotham, le fils de Jerubbaal, vint sur eux.

 57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
