1 Et les hommes d'Ephraim (Éphraïm) lui dirent : Pourquoi nous as-tu fait cela, de ne pas nous avoir appelés lorsque tu es allé te battre contre les Midianites (Madianites) ? Et ils s’emportèrent fortement avec lui.

 1 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

2 Et il leur dit : Qu'ai-je fait maintenant en comparaison de vous ? Les grappillages d'Ephraim (Éphraïm) ne sont-ils pas meilleurs que la vendange d'Abiézer ?

 2 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

3 Dieu a livré en vos mains les princes de Midian (Madian), Oreb et Zeeb ; et qu'ai-je pu faire en comparaison de vous ? Alors leur courroux fut apaisé envers lui, quand il eut dit cela.

 3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

4 ¶ Et Gideon (Gédéon) arriva au Jourdain, et le passa, lui et les trois cents hommes qui étaient avec lui, fatigués, toutefois les poursuivant.

 4 ¶ And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

5 Et il dit aux hommes de Succoth : Donnez, je vous prie, des pains au peuple qui me suit, car ils sont fatigués ; et je poursuis Zebah et Zalmunna, rois de Midian (Madian).

 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

6 ¶ Et les princes de Succoth dirent : Les mains de Zebah et celles de Zalmunna (Tsalmunna) sont-elles déjà en ta main, pour que nous donnions du pain à ton armée ?

 6 ¶ And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

7 Et Gideon (Gédéon) dit : Quand donc le SEIGNEUR aura livré Zebah et Zalmunna en ma main, alors je déchirerai votre chair avec des épines du désert et avec des ronces.

 7 And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

8 ¶ Et de là, il monta à Penuel, et leur parla de la même manière ; et les hommes de Penuel lui répondirent comme les hommes de Succoth lui avaient répondu.

 8 ¶ And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

9 Et il parla de même aux hommes de Penuel, en disant : Quand je reviendrai en paix, je démolirai cette tour.

 9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

10 ¶ Et Zebah et Zalmunna (Tsalmunna) étaient à Karkor, et leurs armées avec eux, environ quinze mille hommes, tous ceux qui restaient de toutes les armées des enfants de l’Est ; car il était tombé cent vingt mille hommes tirant l’épée.

 10 ¶ Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

11 ¶ Et Gideon (Gédéon) monta par le chemin de ceux qui demeuraient dans les tentes, à l’est de Nobah et de Jogbehah, et il frappa l’armée, car l’armée se croyait en sécurité.

 11 ¶ And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.

12 Et lorsque Zebah et Zalmunna s'enfuirent, il les poursuivit, et prit les deux rois de Midian (Madian), Zebah et Zalmunna, et mit en déroute toute leur armée.

 12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

13 ¶ Et Gideon (Gédéon), le fils de Joash, revint de la bataille, avant le lever du soleil.

 13 ¶ And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

14 Et il saisit un jeune garçon d'entre les hommes de Succoth, et l’interrogea ; et le garçon lui décrivit les princes de Succoth et les anciens, savoir soixante-dix-sept hommes.

 14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

15 Et il vint vers les hommes de Succoth, et dit : Voici Zebah et Zalmunna, au sujet desquels vous m'avez insulté, disant : Les mains de Zebah et celle de Zalmunna sont-elles déjà en ta main, que nous donnions du pain à tes hommes qui sont fatigués ?

 15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

16 Et il prit les anciens de la ville, et des épines du désert et des ronces, et avec lesquelles il enseigna les hommes de Succoth.

 16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

17 Et il démolit la tour de Penuel, et tua les hommes de la ville.

 17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

18 ¶ Et il dit à Zebah et à Zalmunna : Comment étaient les hommes que vous avez tués à Tabor ? Et ils répondirent ; Comme tu es, tels ils étaient ; chacun d'eux ressemblait aux enfants d’un roi.

 18 ¶ Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

19 Et il dit : C'étaient mes frères, savoir les fils de ma mère ; de même que le SEIGNEUR est vivant, si vous leur aviez sauvé la vie, je ne vous tuerais pas.

 19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

20 Et il dit à Jether, son premier-né : Lève-toi, et tue-les. Mais le jeune garçon ne tirait pas son épée, car il avait peur, parce qu’il était encore un jeune garçon.

 20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

21 Alors Zebah et Zalmunna dirent : Lève-toi, et jette-toi sur nous ; car tel qu'est l’homme, telle est sa vigueur. Et Gideon (Gédéon) se leva et tua Zebah et Zalmunna, et prit les ornements qui étaient aux cous de leurs chameaux.

 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.

22 ¶ Alors les hommes d'Israël dirent à Gideon (Gédéon) : Domine sur nous, toi et ton fils, et le fils de ton fils ; car tu nous as délivrés de la main de Midian (Madian).

 22 ¶ Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

23 Et Gideon (Gédéon) leur dit : Je ne dominerai pas sur vous, et mon fils ne dominera pas sur vous ; le SEIGNEUR dominera sur vous.

 23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

24 ¶ Et Gideon (Gédéon) leur dit : J’aimerais vous faire une demande. Que chacun de vous me donne les anneaux de son butin. (Car ils avaient des anneaux d'or, parce qu'ils étaient Ismaélites).

 24 ¶ And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

25 Et ils répondirent : Nous les donnerons volontiers. Et ils étendirent un vêtement, et y jetèrent chacun les anneaux de son butin.

 25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

26 Et le poids des anneaux d'or qu'il avait demandés fut de mille sept cents shekels d'or, en plus des ornements, des colliers, et des vêtements de pourpre que portaient les rois de Midian (Madian), et en plus des chaînes qui étaient aux cous de leurs chameaux.

 26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

27 Et Gideon (Gédéon) en fit un éphod, et le mit dans sa ville, savoir à Ophrah ; et tout Israël se prostitua là après celui-ci ; laquelle chose devint un piège pour Gideon (Gédéon) et pour sa maison.

 27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

28 ¶ Ainsi Midian (Madian) fut assujetti aux enfants d'Israël, et ils ne levèrent plus leurs têtes. Et le pays fut en repos quarante ans, pendant les jours de Gideon (Gédéon).

 28 ¶ Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 ¶ Et Jerubbaal, le fils de Joash, s'en alla, et demeura dans sa maison.

 29 ¶ And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

30 Et Gideon (Gédéon) engendra soixante-dix fils, car il eut beaucoup de femmes.

 30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

31 Et sa concubine qui était à Shechem (Sichem), elle aussi, lui enfanta un fils ; et il lui donna le nom d'Abimelech (Abimélec).

 31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

32 ¶ Et Gideon (Gédéon), le fils de Joash, mourut à un grand âge, et fut enterré dans le sépulcre de Joash, son père, à Ophrah des Abiezrites.

 32 ¶ And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33 Et il arriva, que dès la mort de Gideon (Gédéon), les enfants d'Israël se détournèrent et se prostituèrent après les Baalim, et firent de Baalberith (Baal-Berith) leur dieu.

 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 Et les enfants d'Israël ne se souvinrent pas du SEIGNEUR leur Dieu, qui les avait délivrés des mains de tous leurs ennemis tout à l’entour ;

 34 And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35 Et ils ne montrèrent pas de bonté envers la maison de Jerubbaal, appelé Gideon (Gédéon), après tout le bien qu'il avait fait à Israël.

 35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
