1 Or Jephthah, le Gileadite (Galaadite), était un puissant homme et vaillant, et il était le fils d'une prostituée ; et Gilead (Galaad) avait engendré Jephthah.

 1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

2 Et la femme de Gilead (Galaad) lui enfanta des fils ; et les fils de sa femme grandirent, et chassèrent Jephthah, et lui dirent : Tu n'auras point d'héritage dans la maison de notre père ; car toi, tu es fils d'une femme étrangère.

 2 And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.

3 Alors Jephthah s'enfuit loin de ses frères, et demeura dans le pays de Tob ; et des hommes bons à rien se rassemblèrent auprès de Jephthah, et ils allaient avec lui.

 3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

4 ¶ Et il arriva avec le temps, que les enfants d'Ammon firent la guerre à Israël

 4 ¶ And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

5 Et comme les enfants d'Ammon faisaient la guerre à Israël, les anciens de Gilead (Galaad) allèrent chercher Jephthah au pays de Tob.

 5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:

6 Et ils dirent à Jephthah : Viens, et sois notre capitaine, afin que nous puissions combattre contre les enfants d'Ammon.

 6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

7 Et Jephthah dit aux anciens de Gilead (Galaad) : N'est-ce pas vous qui m'avez haï et qui m'avez chassé de la maison de mon père ? Et pourquoi venez-vous à moi maintenant que vous êtes dans la détresse ?

 7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

8 Et les anciens de Gilead (Galaad) dirent à Jephthah : C'est pourquoi nous sommes maintenant revenus vers toi, afin que tu viennes avec nous, et que tu te battes contre les enfants d'Ammon ; et que tu sois notre chef sur tous les habitants de Gilead (Galaad).

 8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

9 Et Jephthah dit aux anciens de Gilead (Galaad) : Si vous me ramenez pour me battre contre les enfants d'Ammon et que le SEIGNEUR les livre devant moi, serai-je votre chef ?

 9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

10 Et les anciens de Gilead (Galaad) dirent à Jephthah : Le SEIGNEUR est témoin entre nous si nous ne faisons pas selon tes paroles

 10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.

11 Et Jephthah alla avec les anciens de Gilead (Galaad), et le peuple l'établit chef et capitaine sur lui. Et Jephthah prononça toutes ses paroles devant le SEIGNEUR, à Mizpeh.

 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

12 ¶ Et Jephthah envoya des messagers au roi des enfants d'Ammon, disant : Qu' as-tu à faire avec moi, que tu viennes contre moi pour combattre dans mon pays ?

 12 ¶ And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

13 Et le roi des enfants d'Ammon répondit aux messagers de Jephthah : C'est parce qu'Israël a pris mon pays, quand il monta d'Égypte, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jabbok et jusqu'au Jourdain ; et maintenant donc, rends-moi ces contrées calmement.

 13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

14 Et Jephthah envoya de nouveau des messagers au roi des enfants d'Ammon,

 14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:

15 Et lui dit : Ainsi dit Jephthah : Israël n'a pas pris le pays de Moab ni le pays des fils d'Ammon ;

 15 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:

16 Mais lorsque Israël est monté d'Égypte, il a marché à travers le désert jusqu'à la mer Rouge, et est parvenu à Kadesh ;

 16 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;

17 Alors Israël envoya des messagers au roi d'Edom, disant : Laisse-moi, je te prie, passer par ton pays ; mais le roi d'Edom ne voulut pas écouter. Et de même il envoya au roi de Moab ; mais il ne voulut pas non plus. Et Israël demeura à Kadesh.

 17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

18 Puis ils marchèrent à travers le désert, et contournèrent le pays d'Edom et le pays de Moab, et arrivèrent par le côté est du pays de Moab, et ils campèrent au-delà de l'Arnon, mais n'entrèrent pas à l’intérieur de la frontière de Moab, car l'Arnon était la frontière de Moab.

 18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.

19 Et Israël envoya des messagers à Sihon, roi des Amorites, roi de Heshbon (Hesbon), et Israël lui dit : Laisse-nous passer, nous te prions, par ton pays, jusqu'en notre lieu.

 19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

20 Mais Sihon n’eut pas confiance en Israël pour le laisser passer par son territoire ; alors Sihon rassembla tout son peuple, et campèrent à Jahaz, et combattirent contre Israël.

 20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

21 Et le SEIGNEUR Dieu d'Israël, livra Sihon et tout son peuple en la main d'Israël, et Israël les frappa ainsi Israël prit possession de tout le pays des Amorites qui habitaient dans ce pays-là.

 21 And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

22 Et ils prirent possession de tous les confins des Amorites, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jabbok, et depuis le désert jusqu'au Jourdain.

 22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.

23 Or maintenant que le SEIGNEUR Dieu d'Israël, a dépossédé les Amorites devant son peuple Israël, en aurais-tu la possession ?

 23 So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?

24 Ne possèdes-tu pas ce que ton dieu Chemosh (Kémosh) t'a donné à posséder ? Ainsi tout ce que le SEIGNEUR, notre Dieu, aura chassé de devant nous, nous le posséderons.

 24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

25 Et maintenant, vaux-tu donc mieux que Balak le fils de Zippor, roi de Moab ? À-t-il jamais contesté contre Israël, ou a-t-il jamais combattu contre eux ?

 25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,

26 Pendant qu'Israël demeurait à Heshbon (Hesbon) et dans ses villes, et à Aroer et dans ses villages, et dans toutes les villes qui sont le long des confins de  l'Arnon, pendant trois cents ans ? Pourquoi ne les avez-vous pas reprises pendant ce temps-là ?

 26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?

27 Par conséquent je n’ai pas péché contre toi ; mais c'est toi qui agit mal en faisant la guerre contre moi le SEIGNEUR, le Juge jugera aujourd'hui entre les enfants d'Israël et les enfants d'Ammon.

 27 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

28 Néanmoins le roi des enfants d'Ammon n'écouta pas les paroles que Jephthah lui avait envoyées.

 28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

29 ¶ Alors l'Esprit du SEIGNEUR vint sur Jephthah ; et il traversa Gilead (Galaad) et Manasseh (Manassé), et il passa par Mizpeh de Gilead (Galaad), et de Mizpeh de Gilead (Galaad) il passa jusqu’aux enfants d'Ammon.

 29 ¶ Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

30 Et Jephthah fit un vœu au SEIGNEUR, et dit : Si tu ne manques pas de livrer les enfants d'Ammon en mes mains,

 30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,

31 Alors il arrivera que quiconque sortira des portes de ma maison pour venir à ma rencontre, lorsque je reviendrai en paix de chez les enfants d'Ammon, sera au SEIGNEUR, et je l'offrirai en offrande consumée.

 31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

32 ¶ Ainsi Jephthah marcha vers les enfants d'Ammon pour combattre contre eux ; et le SEIGNEUR les livra en ses mains ;

 32 ¶ So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.

33 Et il les frappa depuis Aroer jusqu’à ce qu’on arrive à Minnith, c’est-à-dire vingt villes, et jusqu'à la plaine des vignes, dans un grand carnage. Ainsi les enfants d'Ammon furent assujettis aux enfants d'Israël.

 33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 ¶ Et Jephthah vint à Mizpeh, dans sa maison ; et, voici, sa fille sortit à sa rencontre avec des tambourins et des danses ; et elle était son seul enfant ; il n'avait, à part elle, ni fils ni fille.

 34 ¶ And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 Et il arriva, quand il la vit, qu'il déchira ses vêtements, et dit : Hélas, ma fille ! Tu m'as complètement accablé, et tu es du nombre de ceux qui me troublent car j'ai ouvert ma bouche au SEIGNEUR, et ne puis revenir en arrière.

 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

36 Et elle lui dit : Mon père, si tu as ouvert ta bouche au SEIGNEUR, fais-moi selon ce qui a procédé de ta bouche, puisque le SEIGNEUR t'a vengé de tes ennemis, les enfants d'Ammon.

 36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.

37 Et elle dit à son père : Que cette chose me soit faite, laisse-moi seule pendant deux mois, afin que je puisse monter, et descendre les montagnes, et pleurer ma virginité, moi et mes compagnes.

 37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

38 Et il lui dit : Va. Et il la renvoya pour deux mois ; et elle s'en alla avec ses compagnes, et pleura sa virginité sur les montagnes.

 38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

39 Et il arriva, au bout de deux mois, qu'elle revint vers son père ; et il lui fit selon le vœu qu'il avait voué. Et elle n'avait pas connu d'homme. Et ce fut une coutume en Israël,

 39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

40 Qu’annuellement les filles d'Israël allaient pour pleurer la fille de Jephthah le Gileadite (Galaadite), quatre jours par an.

 40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
