1 En ces jours-là il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël ; et, en ces jours-là, la tribu des Danites se cherchait un héritage pour y demeurer, car, jusqu'à ce jour-là, tout leur héritage ne leur avait pas été échu parmi les tribus d'Israël.

 1 In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

2 Et les enfants de Dan envoyèrent de leur famille cinq hommes de leurs confins, hommes vaillants, de Zorah et d'Eshtaol, pour explorer le pays et le reconnaître ; et ils leur dirent : Allez, reconnaissez le pays ; lorsqu’ils arrivèrent au mont Ephraim (Éphraïm), jusqu'à la maison de Micah, ils y passèrent la nuit.

 2 And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.

3 Quand ils furent près de la maison de Micah, ils reconnurent la voix du jeune homme, le Levite ; et ils entrèrent là, et lui dirent : Qui t'a amené ici, et que fais-tu en cet endroit ? Et qu'as-tu ici ?

 3 When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

4 Et il leur dit : Micah a fait telle et telle chose pour moi, et il m’a engâgé, et je suis son prêtre.

 4 And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.

5 Et ils lui dirent : Demande conseil à Dieu nous te prions, afin que nous sachions si notre chemin par lequel nous allons prospérera.

 5 And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

6 Et le prêtre leur dit : Allez en paix, le chemin où vous marchez est devant le SEIGNEUR.

 6 And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.

7 ¶ Et les cinq hommes s'en allèrent, et arrivèrent à Laish ; et virent le peuple qui y était, et comment ils demeuraient insouciants, à la manière des Sidoniens, tranquilles et confiants ; et il n'y avait dans le pays aucun magistrat qui puisse leur faire honte en aucune chose ; et ils étaient éloignés des Sidoniens, et n’avaient d’accointance avec personne.

 7 ¶ Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.

8 Et ils vinrent vers leurs frères, à Zorah et à Eshtaol, et leurs frères leur dirent : Que rapportez-vous ?

 8 And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?

9 Et ils dirent : Levez-vous, afin que nous puissions monter contre eux ; car nous avons vu le pays, et voici, il est très bon et vous rester sans bouger ? Ne soyez pas paresseux pour aller, et entrer, et posséder le pays.

 9 And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.

10 Quand vous y entrerez, vous arriverez chez un peuple confiant, et dans un pays spacieux ; car Dieu l'a livré en vos mains, un lieu où il ne manque rien de tout ce qui est sur la terre.

 10 When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.

11 ¶ Et de là, de Zorah et d’Eshtaol, partirent six cents hommes de la famille des Danites, équipés de leurs armes de guerre.

 11 ¶ And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.

12 Et ils montèrent, et campèrent à Kirjathjearim, en Judah (Juda) ; c'est pourquoi on a appelé ce lieu-là Mahanehdan, jusqu'à ce jour voici, il est derrière Kirjathjearimv.

 12 And they went up, and pitched in Kirjathjearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahanehdan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjathjearim.

13 Et de là, ils passèrent vers le mont Ephraim (Éphraïm), et arrivèrent jusqu'à la maison de Micah.

 13 And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

14 ¶ Et les cinq hommes qui étaient allés pour explorer le pays de Laish (Laïs), dirent à leurs frères : Savez-vous qu'il y a dans ces maisons un éphod, et des teraphim, et une image taillée, et une image fondue ? Maintenant réfléchissez à ce que vous avez à faire.

 14 ¶ Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

15 Et ils se détournèrent vers ce lieu-là, et arrivèrent à la maison du jeune homme, le Levite, savoir la maison de Micah, et le saluèrent.

 15 And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.

16 Et les six cents hommes des enfants de Dan, équipés de leurs armes de guerre, se tinrent à l'entrée de la porte.

 16 And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.

17 Et les cinq hommes qui étaient allés pour explorer le pays montèrent, et entrèrent là, et prirent l'image taillée, et l'éphod, et les teraphim, et l'image fondue. Et le prêtre se tenait à l'entrée de la porte, ainsi que les six cents hommes qui étaient équipés de leurs armes de guerre.

 17 And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.

18 Et ceux-là entrèrent dans la maison de Micah, et prirent l'image taillée, et l'éphod, et les teraphim, et l'image fondue. Puis le prêtre leur dit : Que faites-vous ?

 18 And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?

19 Et ils lui dirent : Tais-toi, mets ta main sur ta bouche, et viens avec nous, et tu nous seras un père et un prêtre. Est-ce mieux pour toi d'être le prêtre de la maison d'un seul homme, ou d'être le prêtre d'une tribu et d'une famille en Israël ?

 19 And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

20 Et le cœur du prêtre en fut joyeux, et il prit l'éphod, et les teraphim, et l'image taillée, et il s'en alla au milieu du peuple.

 20 And the priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

21 Ainsi ils se tournèrent, et s'en allèrent, et mirent devant eux les petits enfants, et les troupeaux, et le bagage.

 21 So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.

22 ¶ Et quand ils furent à un bon chemin de la maison de Micah, les hommes qui étaient dans les maisons voisines de celle de Micah se rassemblèrent, et atteignirent les enfants de Dan.

 22 ¶ And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

23 Et ils crièrent aux enfants de Dan ; et eux tournèrent leurs visages, et dirent à Micah : Qu'as-tu, que tu aies rassemblé ces gens ?

 23 And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

24 Et il dit : Vous avez pris mes dieux que j'ai faits, et le prêtre, et vous êtes partis ; et que me reste-t-il ? Et comment me dites-vous : Qu'as-tu ?

 24 And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?

25 Et les enfants de Dan lui dirent : Ne fais pas entendre ta voix au milieu de nous, de peur que des hommes en colère ne se jettent sur toi, et que tu n'y perdes ta vie et les vies de ta maison.

 25 And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

26 Et les enfants de Dan allèrent leur chemin ; et Micah vit qu'ils étaient trop forts pour lui, et se tourna, et revint à sa maison.

 26 And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

27 Et ils prirent les choses que Micah avait faites, et le prêtre qu'il avait, et arrivèrent à Laish, vers un peuple qui était tranquille et confiant, et ils les frappèrent par le tranchant de l'épée, et brûlèrent au feu la ville.

 27 And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.

28 Et il n'y avait pas de libérateur ; car elle était loin de Sidon, et ils n’avaient pas d’accointance avec d’autres hommes ; et elle était située dans la vallée qui est vers Bethrehob. Et ils bâtirent une ville, et y demeurèrent.

 28 And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Bethrehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.

29 Et ils appelèrent le nom de la ville Dan, d'après le nom de Dan, leur père, qui était né en Israël ; bien qu’au début, le nom de la ville était Laish.

 29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

30 ¶ Et les enfants de Dan se dressèrent l'image taillée ; et Jonathan, le fils de Guershom, fils de Manasseh (Manassé), lui et ses fils, furent prêtres pour la tribu de Dan, jusqu'au jour de la captivité du pays.

 30 ¶ And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.

31 Et ils dressèrent pour eux l'image taillée de Micah, qu'il avait faite, tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Shiloh (Silo).

 31 And they set them up Micah’s graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
