1 Et il arriva en ces jours-là, quand il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël, qu’un certain Levite, séjournant du côté du mont Ephraim (Éphraïm), prit une concubine de BethlehemJudah (Juda).

 1 And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.

2 Et sa concubine lui étant infidèle se prostitua, et le quitta et alla dans la maison de son père, à BethlehemJudah (Juda) ; et y resta quatre mois entiers.

 2 And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.

3 Et son mari se leva, et alla vers elle pour lui parler amicalement, afin de la ramener, il avait avec lui son serviteur et deux ânes. Et elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père ; et quand le père de la jeune femme le vit, il se réjouit de le rencontrer.

 3 And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

4 Et son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, le retint ; et il demeura avec lui trois jours ; et ils mangèrent et burent, et ils y passèrent la nuit.

 4 And his father in law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

5 ¶ vvEt il arriva, le quatrième jour, lorsqu'ils se levèrent de bonne heure le matin, et, comme il se levait pour partir, le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre : Fortifie ton cœur avec un morceau de pain, et après, vous vous en irez.

 5 ¶ And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.

6 Et ils s'assirent, et mangèrent et burent, tous deux ensemble ; et le père de la jeune femme dit à l'homme : Consens, je te prie, et reste la nuit, et que ton cœur se réjouisse.

 6 And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.

7 Et lorsque l'homme se leva pour partir, son beau-père le pressa, et il y passa encore la nuit.

 7 And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.

8 Et le cinquième jour, il se leva de bonne heure le matin pour partir ; mais le père de la jeune femme dit : Fortifie ton cœur, je te prie. Et ils s'attardèrent jusque dans l’après-midi, et ils mangeaient tous deux.

 8 And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.

9 Et lorsque l'homme se leva pour partir, lui et sa concubine, et son serviteur, son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, lui dit : Voici le jour baisse, le soir approche ; je vous prie, passez ici la nuit ; voici, le jour tombe, loge ici, que ton cœur se réjouisse ; et demain vous vous lèverez de bonne heure pour aller votre chemin, pour rentrer chez toi.

 9 And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

10 Mais l'homme ne voulut pas passer la nuit, il se leva, et s'en alla ; et il arriva jusqu’en face de Jebus, qui est Jérusalem, et il y avait avec lui, les deux ânes avec leurs selles, et sa concubine.

 10 But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.

11 Et lorsqu’ils furent près de Jebus, le jour était fort avancé ; et le serviteur dit à son maître : Allons, je te prie, et détournons-nous vers cette ville des Jebusites (Jébusiens) et passons-y la nuit.

 11 And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

12 Et son maître lui dit : Nous ne nous détournerons pas vers une ville d’un peuple étranger, qui n’a pas d’enfants d'Israël ; nous passerons jusqu'à Gibeah.

 12 And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.

13 Et il dit à son serviteur : Viens, et approchons-nous d'un de ces lieux-là, et passons la nuit à Gibeah ou à Ramah.

 13 And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

14 Et ils continuèrent et allèrent leur chemin, et le soleil descendait sure eux, comme ils étaient près de Gibeah, qui appartient à Benjamin.

 14 And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

15 Alors ils se détournèrent vers Gibeah pour y entrer et y passer la nuit ; et lorsqu’ il entra, il s'assit dans une rue de la ville, car il n'y avait personne qui les reçoive dans sa maison pour y passer la nuit.

 15 And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.

16 ¶ Et voici, sur le soir, un homme âgé revenait de son travail dans les champs, il était aussi du mont Ephraim (Éphraïm), et il séjournait à Gibeah, mais les hommes du lieu étaient Benjamites..

 16 ¶ And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.

17 Et lorsqu’il leva ses yeux, il vit le voyageur dans la rue de la ville ; et l’homme âgé lui dit : Où vas-tu, et d'où viens-tu ?

 17 And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

18 Et il lui dit : Nous passons de BethlehemJudah (Juda) vers le versant du mont Ephraim (Éphraïm) ; je suis de là, et j’étais allé à BethlehemJudah (Juda), mais maintenant je vais à la maison du SEIGNEUR ; et il n'y a personne qui me reçoive dans sa maison.

 18 And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.

19 Et pourtant j'ai de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, et j'ai aussi du pain et du vin pour moi et pour ta servante, et pour le jeune homme qui est avec tes serviteurs ; il ne nous manque aucune chose.

 19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.

20 Et l’homme âgé lui dit : Paix soit avec toi. Quoi qu’il en soit, tous tes besoins sont à ma charge ; seulement ne passe pas la nuit dans la rue.

 20 And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

21 Et il le fit entrer dans sa maison, et donna le fourrage aux ânes ; et ils lavèrent leurs pieds, et mangèrent et burent.

 21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

22 ¶ Or comme ils réjouissaient leurs cœurs, voici, les hommes de la ville, certains fils de Belialv, entourèrent la maison, frappèrent à la porte, et parlèrent à l’homme âgé, maître de la maison, disant : Fais sortir l'homme qui est entré dans ta maison, afin que nous le connaissions.

 22 ¶ Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.

23 Et l’homme, le maître de la maison sortit vers eux, et leur dit : Non, mes frères, non, je vous prie, ne soyez pas si pervers, puisque cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne faites pas cette folie.

 23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.

24 Voici ma fille qui est une jeune fille, et sa concubine ; je vous les amènerai dehors maintenant, et vous les humilierez, et vous ferez d’elles comme il vous semblera bon ; mais à cet homme ne faites pas cette chose vile.

 24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.

25 Mais les hommes ne voulurent pas l'écouter ; et l'homme saisit sa concubine et la leur amena dehors ; et ils la connurent et abusèrent d'elle toute la nuit jusqu'au matin ; et comme le jour se levait ils la renvoyèrent.

 25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

26 Et comme l’aube approchait, la femme arriva et tomba à l'entrée de la maison de l'homme chez qui était son seigneur, et y resta jusqu'au jour.

 26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.

27 Et son seigneur se leva le matin, et ouvrit la porte de la maison, et sortit pour aller son chemin ; et voici, la femme, sa concubine, était tombée à l'entrée de la maison, ses mains étaient sur le seuil.

 27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.

28 Et il lui dit : Lève-toi, et allons-nous-en. Mais personne ne répondit. Alors l'homme la prit sur un âne, et l’homme se leva et s'en alla chez lui.

 28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

29 ¶ Et lorsqu’il arriva dans sa maison, il prit un couteau, et saisit sa concubine, et la partagea selon ses os en douze parts, et l'envoya dans tous les confins d'Israël.

 29 ¶ And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.

30 Et il arriva que tous ceux qui virent cela, dirent : Une telle chose n'a été faite, ni vue, depuis le jour que les enfants d'Israël sont montés du pays d'Égypte jusqu'à ce jour. Réfléchissez à cela, prenez conseil, et parlez.

 30 And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
