1 ¶ Et Roboam alla à Shechem (Sichem) ; car tout Israël était venu à Shechem (Sichem) pour le faire roi.

 1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

2 Et il arriva quand Jeroboam le fils de Nebat, qui était encore en Égypte l’apprit, (car il s’était enfui de la présence du roi Salomon, et Jeroboam demeurait en Égypte).

 2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)

3 Qu’ils envoyèrent et l’appelèrent. Et Jeroboam et toute la congrégation d’Israël vinrent et parlèrent à Roboam, disant :

 3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 Ton père a rendu notre joug rude ; maintenant donc, allège le rude service de ton père et son joug pesant qu’il a mis sur nous, et nous te servirons.

 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

5 Et il leur dit : Partez encore pour trois jours, puis revenez vers moi. Et le peuple partit.

 5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

6 Et le roi Roboam consulta les hommes âgés qui s’étaient tenus devant Salomon, son père, tandis qu’iI vivait encore, et dit : Comment avisez-vous afin que je puisserépondre à ce peuple ?

 6 ¶ And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?

7 Et ils lui parlèrent, disant : Si aujourd’hui tu deviens un serviteur de ce peuple, et que tu les serves, et leur répondes, et leur dises de bonnes paroles, alors ils seront tes serviteurs à toujours.

 7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

8 Mais il délaissa le conseil des anciens, qu’ils lui avaient donné, et il consulta les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et qui se tenaient devant lui ;

 8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

9 Et il leur dit : Quel conseil donnez-vous pour que je puisse répondre à ce peuple qui m’a parlé, disant : Allège le joug que ton père a mis sur nous ?

 9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?

10 Et les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui, lui parlèrent, disant : Tu parleras ainsi à ce peuple qui t’a parlé, disant : Ton père a mis sur nous un joug pesant, mais toi, allège-le nous ; tu leur diras ainsi Mon petit doigt sera plus gros que les reins de mon père.

 10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.

11 Et maintenant, tandis que mon père vous a chargé d’un joug pesant, j’ajouterai à votre joug ; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, mais moi, je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.

 11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 Ainsi trois jours après, Jeroboam et tout le peuple, vinrent vers Roboam, comme le roi leur avait indiqué, disant : Revenez vers moi au troisième jour.

 12 ¶ So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

13 Et le roi répondit durement au peuple, et délaissa le conseil que les hommes âgés lui avaient donné.

 13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;

14 Et il leur parla suivant le conseil des jeunes gens, disant : Mon père a rendu pesant votre joug, et j’ajouterai à votre joug ; mon père vous a châtiés aussi avec des fouets ; mais je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.

 14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 Le roi n’écouta donc pas le peuple ; car cela venait du SEIGNEUR, afin qu’il puisse exécuter son propos, lequel le SEIGNEUR avait parlé par Ahijah, le Shilonite, à Jeroboam, le fils de Nebat.

 15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 ¶ Aussi quand tout Israël vit que le roi ne les écoutait pas, le peuple répondit au roi disant : Quelle part avons-nous avec David ? Nous n’avons pas non plus d’héritage dans le fils de Jesse. À vos tentes, ô Israël ; maintenant, occupe-toi de ta propre maison, David. Ainsi Israël s’en alla dans ses tentes.

 16 ¶ So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

17 Mais quant aux enfants d’Israël qui demeuraient dans les villes de Judah, Roboam régna sur eux.

 17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 Puis le roi Roboam envoya Adoram qui était établi sur les tributs ; et tout Israël le lapida avec des pierres, si bien qu’il mourut. C’est pourquoi le roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur son chariot pour s’enfuir à Jérusalem.

 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

19 Ainsi Israël se rebella contre la maison de David jusqu’à ce jour.

 19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

20 Et il arriva quand tout Israël apprit que Jeroboam était de retour, qu’ils l’envoyèrent appeler dans la congrégation, et le firent roi sur tout Israël ; il n’y eut aucune tribu qui suivit la maison de David, seulement la tribu de Judah.

 20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 Et quand Roboam arriva à Jérusalem, il assembla toute la maison de Judah ainsi que la tribu de Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille hommes choisis, qui étaient des guerriers, pour combattre contre la maison d’Israël, pour amener de nouveau le royaume à Roboam, le fils de Salomon.

 21 ¶ And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

22 Mais la parole de Dieu vint à Shemaiah, homme de Dieu, disant :

 22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 Parle à Roboam, le fils de Salomon, roi de Judah, et à toute la maison de Judah et de Benjamin, et au reste du peuple, disant :

 23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

24 Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : Vous ne monterez pas et vous ne vous battrez pas contre vos frères, les enfants d’Israël ; retournez chacun dans sa maison, car cette chose vient de moi. Ils obéirent donc à la parole du SEIGNEUR, et s’en retournèrent pour s’en aller, selon la parole du SEIGNEUR.

 24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

25 ¶ Puis Jeroboam bâtit Shechem (Sichem) au mont Ephraim (Éphraïm) et y demeura ; et il sortit de là et bâtit Penuël.

 25 ¶ Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.

26 Et Jeroboam dit en son cœur : Maintenant le royaume retournera à la maison de David.

 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:

27 Si ce peuple monte pour faire des sacrifices dans la maison du SEIGNEUR à Jérusalem, le cœur de ce peuple se tournera alors vers son seigneur, à savoir, à Roboam, roi de Judah, et ils me tueront, et ils retourneront à Roboam, roi de Judah.

 27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.

28 Sur quoi le roi prit conseil, et fit deux veaux d’or et dit au peuple : C’est trop pour vous de monter à Jérusalem ; voici tes dieux, ô Israël, lesquels t’ont fait monter hors du pays d’Égypte.

 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

29 Et il en mit un à Bethel, et plaça l’autre à Dan.

 29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.

30 Et cette chose devint un péché ; car le peuple alla adorer devant l’un des veaux, même jusqu’à Dan.

 30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

31 Et il fit une maison de hauts lieux, et établit des prêtres, pris parmi les plus bas du peuple, lesquels n’étaient pas des fils de Levi (Lévi).

 31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.

32 Et Jeroboam ordonna une fête au huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, comme la fête qui était en Judah, et il offrit sur l’autel. Il fit ainsi à Bethel, sacrifiant aux veaux qu’il avait faits ; et il établit à Bethel les prêtres des hauts lieux qu’il avait faits.

 32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

33 Ainsi il offrit sur l’autel qu’il avait fait à Bethel, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, à savoir au mois qu’il avait imaginé de son propre cœur, et il ordonna une fête pour les enfants d’Israël, et il offrit sur l’autel, et brûla de l’encens.

 33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
