1 ¶ Et voici, un homme de Dieu vint de Judah, par la parole du SEIGNEUR, à Bethel, et Jeroboam se tenait près de l’autel pour brûler de l’encens.

 1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

2 Et il cria contre l’autel, par la parole du SEIGNEUR, et dit : Ô autel, autel, ainsi dit le Seigneur : Voici un enfant naîtra à la maison de David ; du nom de Josias ; il offrira sur toi les prêtres des hauts lieux qui brûlent de l’encens sur toi, et on brûlera sur toi des ossements d’homme.

 2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.

3 Et il donna ce jour-là un signe, disant : Ceci est le signe dont le SEIGNEUR a parlé : Voici l’autel se fendra, et les cendres qui sont dessus seront répandues.

 3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

4 Et il arriva, quand le roi Jeroboam entendit les propos de l’homme de Dieu qu’il avait criés contre l’autel de Bethel, qu’il étendit sa main de dessus l’autel, disant : Saisissez-le. Et sa main qu’il étendait contre lui devint sèche, et il ne put la ramener à lui.

 4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

5 L’autel aussi se fendit, et les cendres se répandirent de dessus l’autel, selon le signe que l’homme de Dieu avait donné, par la parole du SEIGNEUR.

 5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.

6 Et le roi répondit et dit à l’homme de Dieu : Implore maintenant la face du SEIGNEUR ton Dieu, et prie pour moi, pour que ma main me soit rendue. Et l’homme de Dieu supplia le SEIGNEUR, et la main du roi lui fut rendue ; et devint comme elle était auparavant.

 6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

7 Et le roi dit à l’homme de Dieu : Viens avec moi à la maison, et tu te fortifieras, et je te donnerai une récompense.

 7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

8 Mais l’homme de Dieu dit au roi : Quand tu me donnerais la moitié de ta maison, je n’irais pas chez toi, et je ne mangerais de pain ni ne boirais d’eau dans ce lieu.

 8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:

9 Car il m’a été ainsi commandé par la parole du SEIGNEUR, disant : Ne mange pas de pain, ne bois pas d’eau, et ne retournes pas par le même chemin par lequel tu es allé.

 9 For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

10 Il s’en alla donc par un autre chemin et ne retourna pas par le chemin par lequel il était venu à Bethel.

 10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.

11 ¶ Or, il demeurait un vieux prophète à Bethel, et ses fils vinrent et lui racontèrent toutes les œuvres que l’homme de Dieu avait faites ce jour-là à Bethel ; les paroles qu’il avait dites au roi, ils les racontèrent aussi à leur père,

 11 ¶ Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.

12 Et leur père leur dit : Par quel chemin est-il allé ? Car ses fils avaient vu par quel chemin l’homme de Dieu qui était venu de Judah s’en était allé.

 12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

13 Et il dit à ses fils : Sellez-moi l’âne. Et ils lui sellèrent l’âne ; et il monta dessus.

 13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,

14 Et il s’en alla après l’homme de Dieu, et le trouva assis sous un chêne, et il lui dit : Es-tu l’homme de Dieu qui est venu de Judah ? Et il lui dit : Je le suis.

 14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

15 Alors il lui dit : Viens avec moi à la maison et mange du pain.

 15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

16 Et il dit : Je ne puis retourner avec toi, ni entrer chez toi ; et je ne mangerai pas de pain, ni ne boirai d’eau avec toi dans ce lieu ;

 16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

17 Car il m’a été dit par la parole du SEIGNEUR : Tu n’y mangeras pas de pain et tu n’y boiras pas d’eau ; et tu ne retourneras pas par le chemin par lequel tu es venu.

 17 For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18 Et il lui dit : Je suis aussi un prophète comme tu es ; et un ange m’a parlé par la parole du SEIGNEUR, disant : Ramène-le avec toi dans ta maison, afin qu’il puisse manger du pain et boire de l’eau. Mais Il lui mentait.

 18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

19 Ainsi il retourna avec lui, et il mangea du pain dans sa maison, et but de l’eau.

 19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

20 Et il arriva, comme ils étaient assis à table, que la parole du SEIGNEUR vint au prophète qui l’avait ramené.

 20 ¶ And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:

21 Et il cria à l’homme de Dieu, qui était venu de Judah, disant : Ainsi parle le SEIGNEUR Puisque tu as désobéi à la bouche du SEIGNEUR, et que tu n’as pas gardé le commandement que le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu t’avait donné,

 21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,

22 Mais que tu es revenu, et que tu as mangé du pain et bu de l’eau dans le lieu dont le SEIGNEUR t’avait dit : Ne mange pas de pain et ne bois pas d’eau ; ton cadavre n’entrera pas au sépulcre de tes pères.

 22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

23 ¶ Et il arriva, après qu’il eut mangé du pain et qu’il eut bu, qu’il sella l’âne pour lui, à savoir pour le prophète qu’il avait ramené.

 23 ¶ And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

24 Et quand il fut parti, un lion le trouva dans le chemin et le tua ; et son cadavre était jeté dans le chemin, et l’âne se tenait auprès de lui ; le lion aussi se tenait auprès du cadavre.

 24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.

25 Et voici, des hommes virent le cadavre jeté dans le chemin, et le lion se tenant auprès du cadavre ; et ils vinrent et le racontèrent dans la ville où demeurait le vieux prophète.

 25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

26 Et quand le prophète qui l’avait ramené du chemin, l’apprit, il dit : C’est l’homme de Dieu qui a désobéi à la parole du SEIGNEUR ; c’est pourquoi le SEIGNEUR l’a livré au lion qui l’a déchiré et l’a tué, selon la parole que le SEIGNEUR lui avait dite.

 26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.

27 Et il dit à ses fils, disant : Sellez-moi l’âne. Et ils le sellèrent.

 27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.

28 Et il alla, et trouva son cadavre jeté dans le chemin, et l’âne et le lion se tenant auprès du cadavre ; le lion n’avait pas mangé le cadavre, ni déchiré l’âne.

 28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.

29 Et le prophète releva le cadavre de l’homme de Dieu, et le mit sur l’âne, et le ramena ; et le vieux prophète vint dans la ville pour en mener deuil et l’enterrer.

 29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

30 Et il posa son cadavre dans son propre tombeau ; et ils menèrent deuil sur lui, en disant : Hélas, mon frère !

 30 And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

31 Et il arriva qu’après qu’ils l’aient enterré, il dit à ses fils, disant : Quand je serai mort, enterrez-moi dans le sépulcre où l’homme de Dieu est enterré ; posez mes os à côté de ses os.

 31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:

32 Car le propos qu’il a crié par la parole du SEIGNEUR, contre l’autel qui est à Bethel et contre toutes les maisons des hauts lieux qui sont dans les villes de Samarie, arrivera infailliblement.

 32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33 Après cela Jeroboam ne se détourna pas de son mauvais chemin ; mais il prit de nouveau, parmi les plus bas du peuple, des prêtres des hauts lieux ; et quiconque voulait, il le consacrait, et il devenait un des prêtres des hauts lieux.

 33 ¶ After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

34 Et cette chose devint le péché de la maison de Jeroboam, c’est-à-dire pour la retrancher et l’exterminer de la face de la terre.

 34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
