1 ¶ Et Ahab raconta à Jezebel (Jézabel) tout ce qu’Elijah (Élie) avait fait, et comment il avait, de plus, tué avec l’épée tous les prophètes.

 1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 Et Jezebel (Jézabel) envoya un messager vers Elijah (Élie), disant : Ainsi me fassent les dieux, et plus aussi, si demain à cette heure je ne fasse de ta vie comme la vie de l’un d’eux.

 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.

3 Et, voyant cela, il se leva, et s’en alla pour sauver sa vie, et il arriva à Beersheba, qui appartient à Judah (uda), et laissa là son serviteur.

 3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 Mais, lui-même, alla dans le désert, le chemin d’un jour, et il vint s’asseoir sous un genêt, et demanda pour lui-même qu’il puisse mourir, et dit : C’est assez, maintenant, ô SEIGNEUR, prends ma vie ; car je ne suis pas meilleur que mes pères.

 4 ¶ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

5 Et comme il était couché, et dormait sous un genêt, voici, un ange le toucha et lui dit : Lève-toi, et mange.

 5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

6 Et il regarda, et voici, il y avait un gâteau cuit sur les charbons, et une cruche d’eau près de sa tête. Et il mangea et but, et se recoucha.

 6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

7 Et l’ange du SEIGNEUR revint une seconde fois, et le toucha, et dit : Lève-toi, et mange ; parce que le chemin est trop grand pour toi.

 7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

8 Et il se leva, et mangea et but ; et, avec la vigueur de cette nourriture, il marcha quarante jours et quarante nuits, jusqu’à Horeb, le mont de Dieu.

 8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9 ¶ Et il arriva là dans une caverne, et logea là ; et voici, la parole du SEIGNEUR vint à lui, et il lui dit : Que fais-tu ici, Elijah (Élie) ?

 9 ¶ And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

10 Et il dit : J’ai été très jaloux pour le SEIGNEUR Dieu des armées ; car les enfants d’Israël ont abandonné ton alliance ; ils ont renversé tes autels, et ils ont tué tes prophètes avec l’épée ; et moi, dis-je, moi seul, suis resté, et ils cherchent ma vie pour me l’ôter.

 10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

11 Et il dit : Sors, et tiens-toi sur le mont devant le SEIGNEUR. Et voici, le SEIGNEUR passa, et un grand et impétueux vent déchirait les montagnes, et brisait en morceaux les rocs devant le SEIGNEUR mais le SEIGNEUR n’était pas dans le vent ; et après le vent, un tremblement de terre, mais le SEIGNEUR n’était pas dans le tremblement de terre.

 11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

12 Et après le tremblement de terre, un feu mais le SEIGNEUR n’était pas dans le feu ; et après le feu, une voix calme et tranquille.

 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

13 Et il arriva ainsi, quand Elijah (Élie) l’entendit, qu’il enveloppa son visage dans son manteau, et sortit, et se tint à l’entrée de la caverne. Et voici, une voix vint à lui, et dit : Que fais-tu ici, Elijah (Élie) ?

 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

14 Et il dit : J’ai été très jaloux pour le SEIGNEUR Dieu des armées ; parce que les enfants d’Israël ont abandonné ton alliance, ils ont renversé tes autels, et ils ont tué tes prophètes avec l’épée ; et moi, dis-je moi seul, suis resté, et ils cherchent ma vie pour me l’ôter.

 14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

15 Et le SEIGNEUR lui dit : Va, retourne par ton chemin vers le désert de Damas ; et, quand tu seras arrivé, tu oindras Hazael pour être roi sur la Syrie,

 15 And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

16 Et Jehu, le fils de Nimshi, tu l’oindras pour être roi sur Israël ; et tu oindras Elisha (Elisée), le fils de Shaphat, d’Abelmeholah, pour être prophète à ta place.

 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

17 Et il arrivera que celui qui échappera à l’épée de Hazael, Jehu le tuera ; et celui qui échappera à l’épée de Jehu, Elisha (Elisée) le tuera.

 17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

18 Cependant je me suis réservé sept mille hommes en Israël, tous les genoux qui n’ont pas fléchi devant Baal, et toute bouche qui ne l’a pas embrassé.

 18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

19 ¶ Alors Elijah (Élie) partit de là, et trouva Elisha (Elisée), le fils de Shaphat, qui labourait, avec douze paires de bœufs devant lui ; et il était avec la douzième. Et Elijah (Élie) passa près de lui, et jeta son manteau sur lui.

 19 ¶ So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.

20 Et il laissa ses bœufs, et courut après Elijah (Élie), et dit : Laisse-moi, je te prie, embrasser mon père et ma mère, et puis je te suivrai. Et il lui dit : Va, et reviens ; car que t’ai-je fait ?

 20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?

21 Et il se détourna de lui ; et il prit une paire de bœufs et les égorgea, et bouillit leur chair, avec l’attelage des bœufs, et la donna au peuple ; et ils mangèrent. Puis il se leva, et suivit Elijah (Élie), et le servait.

 21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
