1 ¶ Et il arriva, après beaucoup de jours, que la parole du SEIGNEUR vint à Elijah (Élie), en la troisième année, disant : Va, montre-toi à Ahab, et j’enverrai de la pluie sur la terre.

 1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

2 Et Elijah (Élie) s’en alla pour se montrer à Ahab. Et il y avait une forte famine en Samarie.

 2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

3 Et Ahab appela Obadiah (Abdias), lequel était gouverneur de sa maison. (Or Obadiah (Abdias) craignait grandement le SEIGNEUR.

 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

4 Car il était arrivé ainsi, quand Jezebel (Jézabel) retrancha les prophètes du SEIGNEUR, Obadiah (Abdias) prit une centaine de prophètes et les cacha par cinquante dans une caverne, et les y nourrit de pain et d’eau).

 4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

5 Et Ahab dit à Obadiah (Abdias) : Va dans le pays, vers toutes les fontaines d’eaux et vers tous les torrents ; peut-être que nous trouverons de l’herbe, et que nous sauverons la vie aux chevaux et aux mulets, afin que nous ne perdions pas toutes les bêtes.

 5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

6 Et ils se partagèrent entre eux le pays pour le parcourir Ahab allait par un chemin par lui-même ; et Obadiah (Abdias) allait par un autre chemin, par lui-même.

 6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 Et comme Obadiah (Abdias) était en chemin, voici Elijah (Élie) le rencontra ; et il le reconnut, et tomba sur son visage, et dit : Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Elijah (Élie) ?

 7 ¶ And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

8 Et il lui répondit : Je le suis ; va, dis à ton maître : Voici Elijah (Élie) est ici.

8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

9 Et il dit : Quel péché ai-je fait que tu veuilles livrer ton serviteur en la main d’Ahab, pour me faire mourir ?

 9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

10 De même que le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu est vivant, il n’y a ni nation, ni royaume, où mon seigneur n’ait envoyé pour te chercher ; et quand on disait : Il n’est pas là, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation, qu’on ne t’avait pas trouvé.

 10 As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

11 Et maintenant tu dis : Va, dis à ton seigneur : Voici, Elijah (Élie) est ici.

11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

12 Et il arrivera, aussitôt que je serai parti d’avec toi, que l’Esprit du SEIGNEUR te transportera où je ne sais pas ; et quand j’arriverai dire à Ahab, et ne pouvant te trouver, il me tuera ; mais moi, ton serviteur, je crains le SEIGNEUR depuis ma jeunesse.

 12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

13 N’a-t-on pas rapporté à mon seigneur ce que j’ai fait quand Jezebel (Jézabel) tuait les prophètes du SEIGNEUR, comment j’ai caché une centaine d’hommes des prophètes du SEIGNEUR, par cinquante dans une caverne, et les ai nourris de pain et d’eau ?

 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD’S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

14 Et maintenant tu dis : Va, dis à ton seigneur : Voici Elijah (Élie) est là ; et il me tuera.

 14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.

15 Et Elijah (Élie) lui dit : De même que le SEIGNEUR des armées, devant lequel je me tiens, est vivant, certainement je me montrerai à lui aujourd’hui.

 15 And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.

16 Ainsi Obadiah (Abdias) alla à la rencontre d’Ahab et le lui rapporta ; et Ahab alla à la rencontre d’Elijah (Élie).

 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 ¶ Et il arriva que, quand Ahab vit Elijah (Élie), il lui dit : Es-tu celui qui trouble Israël ?

 17 ¶ And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

18 Et il répondit : Je n’ai pas troublé Israël ; mais c’est toi et la maison de ton père, en ce que vous avez abandonné les commandements du SEIGNEUR, et que tu as suivi les Baalim.

 18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

19 Maintenant donc, envoie et assemble vers moi tout Israël, au mont Carmel, et les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal, et les quatre cents prophètes des bosquets, qui mangent à la table de Jezebel (Jézabel).

 19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.

20 Et Ahab envoya vers tous les enfants d’Israël, et rassembla les prophètes au mont Carmel.

 20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

21 ¶ Et Elijah (Élie) s’approcha de tout le peuple et dit : Combien de temps balancerez-vous entre deux opinions ? Si le SEIGNEUR est Dieu, suivez-le ; mais si c’est Baal, alors suivez-le. Et le peuple ne lui répondit pas un mot.

 21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

22 Alors Elijah (Élie) dit au peuple : Moi, je suis le seul qui soit demeuré un prophète du SEIGNEUR ; mais les prophètes de Baal sont quatre cent cinquante hommes.

 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

23 Qu’on nous donne donc deux taureaux ; et qu’ils choisissent un des taureaux pour eux, et qu’ils le coupent en morceaux et le mettent sur le bois, et qu’ils ne mettent aucun feu dessous ; et je préparerai l’autre taureau, et le mettrai sur le bois, et je ne mettrai aucun feu dessous.

 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

24 Et vous appellerez le nom de vos dieux ; et moi, j’appellerai le nom du SEIGNEUR, et le Dieu qui répondra par le feu, que lui soit Dieu. Et tout le peuple répondit et dit : C’est bien parlé.

 24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 Et Elijah (Élie) dit aux prophètes de Baal : Choisissez un taureau, et préparez-le les premiers, car vous êtes en plus grand nombre, et appelez le nom de vos dieux ; mais ne mettez aucun feu dessous.

 25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

26 Et ils prirent le taureau qu’on leur avait donné, et le préparèrent ; et ils appelèrent le nom de Baal, depuis le matin jusqu’à midi, disant : Ô Baal, entends-nous. Mais il n’y eut ni voix, ni personne qui répondit. Et ils sautaient par-dessus l’autel qu’on avait fait.

 26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

27 Et il arriva à midi, qu’Elijah (Élie) se moqua d’eux et disait : Criez à haute voix, car il est un dieu ; ou il est en train de parler, ou iI poursuit quelque affaire, ou il est en voyage, ou peut-être qu’il dort, et doit être réveillé.

 27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

28 Et Ils criaient à voix haute, et se faisaient des incisions, selon leur coutume, avec des couteaux et des lancettes, jusqu’à ce que le sang coule sur eux.

 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

29 Et il arriva, lorsque midi fut passé, et qu’ils prophétisèrent jusqu’au temps de l’offrande du sacrifice du soir, qu’il y eut ni voix, ni personne qui réponde, ni personne qui fit attention.

 29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

30 Et Elijah (Élie) dit à tout le peuple : Approchez-vous de moi. Et tout le peuple s’approcha de lui, Et il répara l’autel du SEIGNEUR, qui était démoli.

 30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

31 Et Elijah (Élie) prit douze pierres, selon le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel la parole du SEIGNEUR était venue, disant : Israël sera ton nom.

 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

32 Et avec les pierres il bâtit un autel au nom du SEIGNEUR ; et il fit une tranchée autour de l’autel, de la capacité de deux mesures de semence ;

 32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

33 Et il arrangea le bois, et coupa le taureau en morceaux, et le mit sur le bois ; et il dit : Remplissez d’eau quatre barils, et versez-la sur le sacrifice consumé et sur le bois.

 33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

34 Et il dit : Faites-le une seconde fois. Et ils le firent une seconde fois. Et il dit encore : Faites-le une troisième fois. Et ils le firent une troisième fois ;

 34 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

35 Et l’eau coula tout autour de l’autel ; et il remplit d’eau aussi la tranchée.

 35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

36 Et il arriva, au temps de l’offrande du sacrifice du soir, qu’Elijah (Élie), le prophète, s’approcha et dit : SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, que l’on sache aujourd’hui que tu es Dieu en Israël, et que je suis ton serviteur, et que c’est par ta parole que j’ai fait toutes ces choses.

 36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37 Entends-moi, Ô SEIGNEUR, entends-moi, afin que ce peuple puisse savoir que tu es le SEIGNEUR Dieu, et que tu as ramené leur cœur.

 37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

38 Alors le feu du SEIGNEUR tomba, et consuma le sacrifice consumé, et le bois, et les pierres, et la poussière, et lapa l’eau qui était dans la tranchée.

 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 Et quand tout le peuple le vit, ils tombèrent sur leurs faces et ils dirent : Le SEIGNEUR, lui est le Dieu ; le SEIGNEUR, lui est le Dieu.

 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

40 Et Elijah (Élie) leur dit : Saisissez les prophètes de Baal ; n’en laissez pas un s’échapper. Et ils les saisirent ; et Elijah (Élie) les fit descendre au torrent Kishon, et les égorgea là.

 40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

41 ¶ Et Elijah (Élie) dit à Ahab : Monte, mange et bois ; car il y a un bruit d’abondance de pluie.

 41 ¶ And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

42 Et Ahab monta pour manger et pour boire. Et Elijah (Élie) monta au sommet du Carmel ; et il se jeta contre terre, et mit sa face entre ses genoux,

 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

43 Et dit à son serviteur : Monte, maintenant, et regarde vers la mer. Et il monta, et regarda, et dit : Il n’y a rien. Et il lui dit : Retournes-y sept fois.

 43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

44 Et il arriva qu’à la septième fois, il dit : Voici, il se lève de la mer un petit nuage, comme la main d’un homme. Et il dit : Monte, et dis à Ahab : Attelle ton chariot, et descends, afin que la pluie ne t’arrête pas.

 44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

45 Et il arriva, entre temps, que le ciel devint noir de nuages, et de vent, et il y eut une grande pluie. Et Ahab monta sur son chariot, et alla à Jezreel.

 45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

46 Et la main du SEIGNEUR fut sur Elijah (Élie) ; et il ceignit ses reins, et courut devant Ahab, jusqu’à l’entrée de Jezreel.

 46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
