1 Or, les fils des prophètes dirent à Elisha (Elisée) : Voici maintenant, le lieu où nous demeurons avec toi est trop étroit pour nous.

 1 And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.

2 Allons, nous te prions jusqu’au Jourdain ; et nous prendrons là chacun une poutre, et faisons là un lieu pour y demeurer.

 2 Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.

3 Et l’un deux dit : Consens, je te prie, de venir avec tes serviteurs. Et il répondit : J’irai.

 3 And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.

4 Il alla donc avec eux. Et quand ils arrivèrent au Jourdain, ils coupèrent du bois.

 4 So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood.

5 Mais comme l’un d’eux abattait une poutre, le fer de sa cognée tomba dans l’eau ; et il s’écria et dit : Hélas, maître ! car elle était empruntée.

 5 But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.

6 Et l’homme de Dieu dit : Où est-elle tombée ? Et il lui montra l’endroit. Et Elisha (Elisée) coupa un morceau de bois et le jeta là et fit surnager le fer ;

 6 And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.

7 Et il dit : Soulève-le. Et il étendit la main et le prit.

 7 Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.

8 ¶ Puis le roi de Syrie fit la guerre contre Israël, et tenait conseil avec ses serviteurs, disant : En tel et tel lieu sera mon camp.

 8 ¶ Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.

9 Et l’homme de Dieu envoya au roi d’Israël, disant : Prends garde à ne pas passer par ce lieu-là ; car les Syriens y sont descendus.

 9 And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down.

10 Et le roi d’Israël envoya au lieu dont l’homme de Dieu lui avait parlé et l’en avait averti, ce qu’il fit non pas une fois, ni deux fois.

 10 And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.

11 C’est pourquoi le cœur du roi de Syrie fut fort troublé de cette chose ; et il appela ses serviteurs, et leur dit : Ne me montrerez-vous pas lequel de nous est pour le roi d’Israël ?

 11 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?

12 Et l’un de ses serviteurs lui dit : Personne, mon seigneur, ô roi ; mais Elisha (Elisée), le prophète qui est en Israël, raconte au roi d’Israël les paroles que tu dis dans ta chambre à coucher.

 12 And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

13 ¶ Et il dit : Allez, épiez où il est, afin que je puisse envoyer le prendre. Et on lui rapporta : Voici, il est à Dothan.

 13 ¶ And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

14 C’est pourquoi il y envoya des chevaux, des chariots et une grande armée ; et ils arrivèrent de nuit et encerclèrent la ville.

 14 Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.

15 Et quand le serviteur de l’homme de Dieu se leva de bonne heure et sortit voici, une armée encerclait la ville, avec des chevaux et des chariots. Et son serviteur lui dit : Hélas, mon maître ! comment ferons-nous ?

 15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

16 Et il répondit : N’aie pas peur ; car ceux qui sont avec nous sont en plus grand nombre que ceux qui sont avec eux.

 16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

17 Et Elisha (Elisée) pria et dit : SEIGNEUR, je te prie, ouvre ses yeux, afin qu’il puisse voir. Et le SEIGNEUR ouvrit les yeux du jeune homme, et il vit ; et voici, la montagne était pleine de chevaux et de chariots de feu, autour d’Elisha (Elisée).

 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

18 Et quand ils descendirent vers lui , il pria le SEIGNEUR et dit : Je te prie, frappe ce peuple d’aveuglement. Et il les frappa d’aveuglement, selon la parole d’Elisha (Elisée).

 18 And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

19 ¶ Et Elisha (Elisée) leur dit : Ce n’est pas ici le chemin et ce n’est pas ici la ville ; suivez-moi ; et je vous mènerai vers l’homme que vous cherchez. Mais il les mena à Samarie.

 19 ¶ And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.

20 Et il arriva que, quand ils furent entrés dans Samarie, Elisha (Elisée) dit : SEIGNEUR, ouvre les yeux de ces hommes, afin qu’ils puissent voir. Et le SEIGNEUR ouvrit leurs yeux, et ils virent ; et voici, ils étaient au milieu de Samarie.

 20 And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

21 Et le roi d’Israël dit à Elisha (Elisée), quand il les vit : Mon père, les frapperai-je ? les frapperai-je ?

 21 And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them?

22 Et il répondit : Tu ne les frapperas pas ; frapperais-tu ceux que tu aurais faits captifs avec ton épée et avec ton arc ? Mets du pain et de l’eau devant eux, pour qu’ils mangent et boivent, et s’en aillent vers leur maître.

 22 And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.

23 Et le roi leur prépara beaucoup de nourriture ; et après qu’ils eurent mangé et bu, il les renvoya, et ils s’en allèrent vers leur maître. Ainsi les bandes des Syriens ne revinrent plus dans le pays d’Israël.

 23 And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

24 ¶ Et il arriva, après cela, que Benhadad, roi de Syrie, rassembla toute son armée, et monta et assiégea Samarie.

 24 ¶ And it came to pass after this, that Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.

25 Et il y eut une grande famine dans Samarie ; et voici, ils l’assiégèrent jusqu’à ce que la tête d’un âne soit vendue quatre-vingts pièces d’argent, et le quart d’un kab d’excrément de pigeon pour cinq pièces d’argent.

 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass’s head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

26 Et, comme le roi d’Israël passait sur la muraille, une femme lui cria, disant : Aide-moi, mon seigneur, ô roi.

 26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.

27 Et il dit : Si le SEIGNEUR ne t’aide pas, comment t’aiderais-je ? Dans l’aire ou du pressoir ?

 27 And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?

28 Et le roi lui dit : Qu’est-ce qui te chagrine ? Et elle répondit : Cette femme-là m’a dit : Donne ton fils, pour que nous puissions le manger aujourd’hui ; et demain nous mangerons le mien.

 28 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow.

29 Ainsi nous avons fait bouillir mon fils, et nous l’avons mangé ; et le jour suivant, je lui ai dit : Donne ton fils, pour que nous puissions le manger ; et elle a caché son fils.

 29 So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.

30 ¶ Et il arriva, lorsque le roi entendit les paroles de la femme, qu’il déchira ses vêtements ; et comme il passait sur la muraille, et le peuple regarda, et voici, il avait en dessous un sac sur son corps.

 30 ¶ And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.

31 Puis il dit : Que Dieu me fasse ainsi et encore plus, si la tête d’Elisha (Elisée), le fils de Shaphat, reste aujourd’hui sur lui.

 31 Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.

32 Mais Elisha (Elisée) était assis dans sa maison et les anciens étaient assis avec lui, et le roi envoya un homme devant lui. Mais, avant que le messager soit arrivé, il dit aux anciens : Voyez-vous comment ce fils de meurtrier a envoyé quelqu’un pour ôter ma tête ? Regardez, lorsque le messager entrera, fermez la porte, et tenez le bon à la porte. N’est-ce pas le bruit des pieds de son maître après lui ?

 32 But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?

33 Et tandis qu’il leur parlait encore, voici, le messager descendit vers lui, et dit : Voici, ce mal vient du SEIGNEUR ; qu’attendrai-je plus du SEIGNEUR ?

 33 And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
