1 Étant donné que beaucoup ont entrepris de mettre en ordre une déclaration de ces choses qui sont les plus assurément crues parmi nous,

 1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

2 Comme nous les ont transmises ceux qui dès le commencement ont été les témoins oculaires, et les ministres de la parole;

 2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

3 Il m’a aussi semblé bon, ayant eu une parfaite compréhension de toutes les choses depuis le tout commencement, de te les écrire par ordre, très excellent Théophile,

 3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

4 Afin que tu puisses connaître la certitude des choses, dans lesquelles tu as été instruit.

 4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

5 ¶ IL y avait au temps d’Hérode, roi de Judée, un certain prêtre nommé Zacharie, du rang d’Abia: et sa femme était des filles d’Aaron, et son nom était Élisabeth.

 5 ¶ There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

6 Et ils étaient tous deux droits devant Dieu, marchant irréprochables dans tous les commandements et toutes les ordonnances du Seigneur.

 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7 Et ils n’avaient pas d’enfants, parce qu’Élisabeth était stérile et ils étaient tous deux maintenant bien avancés en âge.

 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

8 Et il arriva, pendant qu’il exerçait la fonction de prêtre devant Dieu, selon l’ordre de son rang,

 8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,

9 Que selon la coutume de la fonction de prêtre, son sort était de brûler de l’encens lorsqu’il alla dans le temple du Seigneur.

 9 According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10 Et toute la multitude du peuple était dehors en train de prier, au moment de l’encens.

 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

11 Et un ange du Seigneur lui apparut se tenant debout à droite de l’autel de l’encens.

 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12 Et lorsque Zacharie le vit, il fut troublé, et la peur tomba sur lui.

 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 Mais l’ange lui dit: N’aie pas peur, Zacharie: car ta prière a été entendue; et ta femme Élisabeth t’enfantera un fils, et tu appelleras son nom Jean.

 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14 Et tu en auras joie et exultation; et beaucoup se réjouiront à sa naissance.

 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15 Car il sera grand à la vue du Seigneur, et ne boira ni vin, ni boisson forte; et il sera rempli de l’Esprit Saint, dès même l’utérus de sa mère.

 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

16 Et beaucoup des enfants d’Israël se tourneront vers le Seigneur leur Dieu.

 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17 Et il ira devant lui dans l’esprit et le pouvoir d’Élie, pour tourner les cœurs des pères vers les enfants, et les désobéissants à la sagesse des justes; afin de préparer un peuple prédisposé pour le Seigneur.

 17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

18 Et Zacharie dit à l’ange: À quoi connaîtrai-je cela? Car je suis un homme âgé, et ma femme est bien avancée en âge.

 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19 Et l’ange répondant, lui dit: Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens dans la présence de Dieu; et suis envoyé pour te parler, et te déclarer ces heureuses nouvelles.

 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

20 Et, voici, tu seras muet, et incapable de parler, jusqu’au jour où ces choses seront exécutées, parce que tu n’as pas cru à mes paroles, qui se réaliseront en leur temps.

 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

21 Et le peuple attendait Zacharie, et était surpris de ce qu’il tardait si longtemps dans le temple.

 21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

22 Et quand il sortit, il ne pouvait leur parler: et ils perçurent qu’il avait eu une vision dans le temple: car il leur faisait des signes, et resta sans voix.

 22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

23 Et il arriva que, dès que les jours de son ministère furent accomplis, il partit pour sa propre maison.

 23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

24 Et après ces jours, sa femme Élisabeth conçut, et se cacha durant cinq mois, disant:

 24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

25 Le Seigneur a ainsi agi avec moi aux jours où il m’a regardée, pour ôter mon outrage du milieu des hommes.

 25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

26 Et au sixième mois, l’ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth,

 26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 Vers une vierge fiancée à un homme de la maison de David, dont le nom était Joseph; et le nom de la vierge était Marie.

 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

28 Et l’ange entra chez elle, et dit: Salut, toi qui es grandement favorisée, le Seigneur est avec toi: bénie es-tu parmi les femmes.

 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

29 Et lorsqu’elle le vit, elle fut troublée par son propos, et chercha dans son cerveau quelle sorte de salutation cela pouvait être.

 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

30 Et l’ange lui dit: N’aie pas peur, Marie: car tu as trouvé faveur devant Dieu.

 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

31 Et, voici, tu concevras dans ton utérus, et tu enfanteras un fils, et tu appelleras son nom JÉSUS.

 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

32 Il sera grand, et sera appelé le Fils du Plus-Haut: et le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de son père David:

 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33 Et il régnera sur la maison de Jacob pour toujours; et son royaume sera sans fin.

 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34 Alors Marie dit à l’ange: Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je ne connais pas d’homme?

 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35 Et l’ange répondit et lui dit: L’Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, et le pouvoir du Plus-Haut te couvrira de son ombre: par conséquent cette sainte chose qui naîtra de toi sera appelée le Fils de Dieu.

 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36 Et, voici, ta cousine Élisabeth, elle a aussi conçu un fils en sa vieillesse: et elle est dans son sixième mois, elle qui était appelée stérile.

 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

37 Car avec Dieu rien ne sera impossible.

 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

38 Et Marie dit: Voici la suivante du Seigneur; qu’il me soit fait selon ta parole. Et l’ange partit d’auprès d’elle.

 38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

39 Et Marie se leva en ces jours-là, et s’en alla en hâte la province des collines, dans une ville de Juda;

 39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

40 Et entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Élisabeth.

 40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41 Et il arriva, lorsque Élisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, que le bébé tressaillit dans son utérus; et Élisabeth fut remplie de l’Esprit Saint:

 41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

42 Et elle s’exprima d’une voix retentissante, et dit: Bénie es-tu parmi les femmes, et béni est le fruit de ton utérus.

 42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

43 Et d’où me vient ceci, que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi?

 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44 Car, voici, dès que la voix de ta salutation a résonné à mes oreilles, le bébé a sursauté dans mon utérus.

 44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

45 Et bénie est celle qui a cru: car il y aura une réalisation de ces choses qui lui ont été dites de la part du Seigneur.

 45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

46 Et Marie dit: Mon âme magnifie le Seigneur,

 46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 Et mon esprit s’est réjoui en Dieu mon Sauveur.

 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48 Car il a regardé la bassesse de sa suivante: car, voici, désormais toutes les générations m’appelleront bénie.

 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

49 Car celui qui est puissant m’a fait de grandes choses; et saint est son nom.

 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

50 Et sa miséricorde est sur ceux qui le craignent de génération en génération.

 50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

51 Il a montré la vigueur de son bras; il a dispersé les orgueilleux dans l’imagination de leurs cœurs.

 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

52 Il a fait tomber les puissants du haut de leurs sièges, et a élevé ceux de basse condition.

 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

53 Il a rassasié l’affamé de bonnes choses; et le riche il l’a renvoyé à vife.

 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

54 Il a aidé son serviteur Israël, en souvenir de sa miséricorde;

 54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

55 Comme il avait parlé à nos pères, à Abraham, et à sa semence pour toujours.

 55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

56 Et Marie demeura avec elle environ trois mois, et retourna dans sa propre maison.

 56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

57 Or le terme d’Élisabeth arriva où elle devait accoucher; et elle mit au monde un fils.

 57 Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

58 Et ses voisins et ses cousins apprirent comment le Seigneur avait montré sa grande miséricorde sur elle; et ils se réjouirent avec elle.

 58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

59 Et il arriva qu’au huitième jour ils vinrent pour circoncire l’enfant; et ils l’appelèrent Zacharie, d’après le nom de son père.

 59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

60 Et sa mère répondit et dit: Non pas ainsi; mais il sera appelé Jean.

 60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

61 Et ils lui dirent: Il n’y a personne de ta parenté qui soit appelé par ce nom.

 61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

62 Et ils firent des signes à son père, comment voulait-il qu’il fut appelé.

 62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

63 Et il demanda une tablette et écrivit disant: Son nom est Jean. Et ils furent tous surpris.

 63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

64 Et immédiatement sa bouche fut ouverte, et sa langue fut déliée, et il parlait et louait Dieu.

 64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

65 Et la crainte vint sur tous ceux qui demeuraient autour d’eux: et tous ces dires se propagèrent de tous côtés dans toute la province des collines de Judée.

 65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa.

66 Et tous ceux qui les entendirent, les mirent dans leur cœur, disant: Que sera donc cet enfant! Et la main du Seigneur était avec lui.

 66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 Et son père Zacharie fut rempli de l’Esprit Saint, et prophétisa, disant:

 67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

68 Béni soit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël; car il a visité et racheté son peuple,

 68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

69 Et nous a suscité une corne de salut dans la maison de son serviteur David;

 69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

70 Comme il en avait parlé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes, qui ont été depuis le commencement du monde:

 70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

71 Que nous devions être sauvés de nos ennemis, et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent;

 71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72 Pour exécuter la miséricorde promise à nos pères, et se souvenir de sa sainte alliance;

 72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

73 Le serment qu’il a juré à Abraham notre père,

 73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

74 Qu’il nous accorderait, qu’étant délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, nous puissions le servir sans crainte,

 74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

75 En sainteté et droiture devant lui, tous les jours de notre vie.

 75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

76 Et toi, enfant, tu seras appelé le prophète du Plus-Haut: car tu iras devant la face du Seigneur, pour préparer ses chemins;

 76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

77 Pour donner la connaissance du salut à son peuple par la rémission de leurs péchés,

 77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

78 Par la tendre miséricorde de notre Dieu; par laquelle l’aube du jour d’en haut nous a visités,

 78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

79 Pour donner la lumière à ceux qui sont assis dans l’obscurité et dans l’ombre de la mort, pour guider nos pieds dans le chemin de la paix.

 79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

80 Et l’enfant grandissait et se fortifiait en esprit, et il était dans les déserts jusqu’au jour de sa manifestation à Israël.

 80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
