1 Et il arriva en ces jours-là, qu’on publia un décret de César Auguste, afin que tout le monde soit taxé.

 1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

2 (Et cette taxation fut faite pour la première fois lorsque Cyrénius était gouverneur de Syrie).

 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 Et tous allaient pour être taxés, chacun dans sa propre ville.

 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 Et Joseph aussi monta de Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, en Judée, dans la ville de David, qui est appelée Bethléhem; (parce qu’il était de la maison et de la lignée de David):

 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 Pour être taxé avec Marie, engagée à être sa femme, laquelle était avancée dans sa grossesse.

 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 Et ce fut ainsi, pendant qu’ils étaient là, que les jours où elle devait accoucher furent accomplis.

 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 Et elle mit au monde son fils premier-né, et l’emmaillota, et le coucha dans une crèche; parce qu’il n’y avait pas de place pour eux dans l’hôtellerie.

 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 Et il y avait dans la même province des bergers restant dans les champs, et veillant leur troupeau pendant la nuit.

 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 Et, voici, l’ange du Seigneur vint sur eux, et la gloire du Seigneur resplendit tout autour d’eux: et ils eurent grande peur.

 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 Et l’ange leur dit: N’ayez pas peur: car, voici, je vous apporte de bonnes nouvelles de grande joie, qui seront pour tous les peuples.

 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 Car aujourd’hui vous est né, dans la ville de David, un Sauveur, qui est Christ le Seigneur.

 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 Et cela vous sera un signe pour vous; vous trouverez le bébé emmailloté, couché dans une crèche.

 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 Et soudain il y eut avec l’ange une multitude de l’armée céleste louant Dieu et disant:

 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Gloire à Dieu dans les lieux les plus hauts, et sur terre paix, bonne volonté envers les hommes.

 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 Et il arriva, lorsque les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner dans le ciel, que les bergers se dirent l’un l’autre: Allons maintenant jusqu’à Bethléhem, et voyons cette chose qui est arrivée, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.

 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 Et ils vinrent en hâte, et trouvèrent Marie, et Joseph, et le bébé couché dans une crèche.

 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 Et lorsqu’ils l’eurent vu, ils firent connaître de tous côtés ce qui leur avait été dit concernant cet enfant.

 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 Et tous ceux qui l’entendirent, étaient surpris de ces choses qui leur étaient racontées par les bergers.

 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 Mais Marie gardait toutes ces choses, et les repassait dans son cœur.

 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 Et les bergers s’en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu pour toutes les choses qu’ils avaient entendues et vues, conformément à ce qui leur avait été dit.

 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

21 Et quand les huit jours furent achevés pour la circoncision de l’enfant, son nom fut appelé JÉSUS, lequel avait été ainsi nommé par l’ange avant qu’il soit conçu dans l’utérus.

 21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

22 Et quand les jours de la purification de Marie, selon la loi de Moïse, furent accomplis, ils l’amenèrent à Jérusalem, pour le présenter au Seigneur;

 22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

23 (Comme il est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur, Tout mâle qui ouvre l’utérus sera appelé saint au Seigneur);

 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24 Et pour offrir un sacrifice selon ce qui est dit dans la loi du Seigneur, Une paire de tourterelles, ou deux jeunes pigeons.

 24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

25 Et, voici, il y avait à Jérusalem, un homme dont le nom était Siméon; et cet homme était juste et dévot, attendant la consolation d’Israël: et l’Esprit Saint était sur lui.

 25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 Et il lui avait été révélé par l’Esprit Saint qu’il ne verrait pas la mort, avant qu’il n’ait vu le Christ du Seigneur.

 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

27 Et il vint au temple par l’Esprit: et quand les parents amenèrent l'enfant Jésus pour faire à son égard d’après la coutume de la loi,

 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28 Alors il le prit dans ses bras, et bénit Dieu, et dit:

 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 Seigneur, laisse maintenant partir ton serviteur en paix, selon ta parole:

 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30 Car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,

 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31 Que tu as préparé devant la face de tous les peuples;

 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 Une lumière pour éclairer les Gentils, et la gloire de ton peuple Israël.

 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

33 Et Joseph et sa mère s’émerveillaient de ces choses qu’on disait de lui.

 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

34 Et Siméon les bénit, et dit à Marie sa mère: Voici, cet enfant est établi pour la chute et le relèvement de beaucoup en Israël; et pour un signe contre lequel on parlera;

 34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

35 (Oui, une épée transpercera aussi d’un bout à l’autre ta propre âme), afin que les pensées de beaucoup de cœurs puissent être révélées.

 35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

36 Et il y avait Anne, une prophétesse, la fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser: elle était d’un grand âge, et avait vécu avec son mari sept ans depuis sa virginité;

 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

37 Et elle était veuve, âgée d’environ quatre-vingt-quatre ans, laquelle ne quittait pas le temple, mais servait Dieu par des jeûnes et des prières nuit et jour.

 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38 Et elle arrivant à cet instant de même remercia le Seigneur, et parlait de lui à tous ceux qui à Jérusalem attendaient la rédemption.

 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

39 Et lorsqu’ils eurent exécuté toutes les choses selon la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur propre ville.

 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

40 Et l’enfant grandissait et se fortifiait en esprit, rempli de sagesse: et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.

 40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

41 Or ses parents allaient à Jérusalem chaque année à la fête de la pâque.

 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

42 Et quand il eut douze ans, ils montèrent à Jérusalem, suivant la coutume de la fête.

 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43 Et lorsque les jours furent révolus, comme ils s’en retournaient, l’enfant Jésus s’attarda à Jérusalem; et Joseph et sa mère ne le savaient pas.

 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44 Mais eux, supposant qu’il avait été en leur compagnie, firent une journée de chemin; et ils le cherchèrent parmi leurs parenté et connaissances.

 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45 Et lorsqu’ils ne le trouvèrent pas, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem, le cherchant.

 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46 Et il arriva qu’après trois jours ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et leur posant des questions.

 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47 Et tous ceux qui l’entendaient étaient étonnés de sa compréhension et de ses réponses.

 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

48 Et lorsqu’ils le virent, ils furent stupéfaits: et sa mère lui dit: Fils, pourquoi as-tu ainsi agi avec nous? Voici ton père et moi te cherchions, étant affligés.

 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49 Et il leur dit: Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas que je dois m’occuper des affaires de mon Père?

 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

50 Et ils ne comprirent pas le propos qu’il leur disait.

 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51 Et il descendit avec eux et vint à Nazareth, et il leur était soumis: mais sa mère gardait tous ces dires dans son cœur.

 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52 Et Jésus augmentait en sagesse, et en stature et en faveur devant Dieu et devant les hommes.

 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
