1 Et il arriva, lorsque Jésus eut fini de donner commandements à ses douze disciples, qu'il partit de là pour aller enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.

 1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

2 Or lorsque Jean entendit parler dans la prison des œuvres de Christ, il envoya deux de ses disciples,

 2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

3 Et ils lui dirent: Es-tu celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?

 3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

4 Jésus répondit et leur dit: Allez, et déclarez à Jean les choses que vous entendez et voyez:

 4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

5 Les aveugles reçoivent leur vue et les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont rendus nets, et les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, et l’évangile est prêché aux pauvres.

 5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

6 Et béni est celui qui ne sera pas offensé à cause de moi.

 6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

7 ¶ Et comme ils s’en allaient, Jésus se mit à parler aux multitudes concernant Jean: Qu’êtes-vous allés voir au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?

 7 ¶ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

8 Mais qu’êtes-vous allés voir? Un homme vêtu d’un habillement délicat? Voici, ceux qui portent des tenues délicates sont dans les maisons des rois.

 8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.

9 Mais qu’êtes-vous allés voir? Un prophète? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu’un prophète.

 9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

10 Car c’est celui de qui il est écrit, Voici, j’envoie mon messager devant ta face, lequel préparera ton chemin devant toi.

 10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

11 En vérité, je vous dis, parmi ceux qui sont nés de femmes, il n’en a pas été suscité de plus grand que Jean le Baptiste: toutefois celui qui est le moindre dans le royaume du ciel est plus grand que lui.

 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12 Et depuis les jours de Jean le Baptiste jusqu’à maintenant, le royaume du ciel souffre de la violence, et les violents le prennent par force.

 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

13 Car tous les prophètes et la loi ont prophétisé jusqu’à Jean.

 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

14 Et si vous voulez le recevoir, c’est Élie qui devait venir.

 14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

15 Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende.

 15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

16 ¶ Mais à qui comparerai-je cette génération? Elle est semblable aux enfants assis dans les marchés et appelant leurs compagnons,

 16 ¶ But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,

17 Et disant, Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n’avez pas dansé; nous vous avons pleuré et vous ne vous êtes pas lamentés.

 17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

18 Car Jean est venu ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et ils disent, Il a un diable.

 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

19 Le Fils de l’homme est venu mangeant et buvant; et ils disent, Voici un glouton et un ivrogne, un ami des publicains et des pécheurs. Mais la sagesse est justifiée par ses enfants.

 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

20 ¶ Alors il commença à faire des reproches aux villes où il avait fait la plupart de ses puissantes œuvres parce qu’elles ne s’étaient pas repenties:

 20 ¶ Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

21 Malheur à toi, Chorazin! malheur à toi, Bethsaida! car si les puissantes œuvres qui ont été faites au milieu de vous avaient été faites à Tyr et à Sidon, il y a longtemps qu’elles se seraient repenties vêtues de toile à sac et de cendres.

 21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22 Mais je vous dis qu’au jour du jugement ce sera pour Tyr et Sidon plus supportable que pour vous.

 22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

23 Et toi, Capernaüm, qui as été élevée jusqu’au ciel, tu seras abaissée jusqu’en enfer: car si les puissantes œuvres qui ont été faites au milieu de toi avaient été faites à Sodome, elle subsisterait encore aujourd’hui.

 23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24 Mais je vous dis: Qu’au jour du jugement ce sera pour le pays de Sodome plus supportable que pour toi.

 24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

25 ¶ À ce moment-là, Jésus répondit et dit: Je te remercie, Ô Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, parce que tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux prudents, et que tu les as révélées aux bébés.

 25 ¶ At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

26 Oui certainement, Père: car cela semble être bon à ta vue.

 26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27 Toutes choses m’ont été livrées par mon Père: et aucun homme ne connaît le Fils, sinon le Père; et aucun homme ne connaît le Père, sinon le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils le révélera.

 27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

28 ¶ Venez à moi, vous tous qui peinez et êtes lourdement chargés, et je vous donnerai du repos.

 28 ¶ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Prenez mon joug sur vous et apprenez de moi; car je suis docile et modeste de cœur: et vous trouverez repos à vos âmes.

 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 Car mon joug est facile et ma charge est légère.

 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
