1 Et quand le roi d’Arad, le Canaanite (Cananéen), qui demeurait dans le Sud, entendit dire qu’Israël venait par le chemin des espions, alors il combattit contre Israël, et il en fit quelques-uns prisonniers.

 1 And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.

2 Et Israël fit un vœu au SEIGNEUR, et dit : Si tu livres ce peuple en ma main, je détruirai entièrement ses villes.

 2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

3 Et le SEIGNEUR entendit la voix d’Israël et livra les Canaanites (Cananéens), et ils les détruisirent complètement, ainsi que leurs villes ; et on appela le lieu Hormah.

 3 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.

4 ¶ Et ils partirent du mont Hor, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, pour faire le tour du pays d’Edom ; et l’âme du peuple était très découragé à cause du chemin.

 4 ¶ And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

5 Et le peuple parla contre Dieu et contre Moïse, et dit : Pourquoi nous avez-vous fait monter hors d’Égypte, pour mourir dans le désert ? Car il n’y a pas de pain, il n’y a pas d’eau, et notre âme est dégoûtée de ce pain si léger.

 5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

6 Et le SEIGNEUR envoya parmi le peuple des serpents enflammés, et ils mordirent le peuple, et beaucoup de ceux d’Israël moururent.

 6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

7 ¶ C’est pourquoi le peuple vint à Moïse, et ils dirent : Nous avons péché, car nous avons parlé contre le SEIGNEUR et contre toi ; prie le SEIGNEUR, pour qu’il retire de nous les serpents. Et Moïse pria pour le peuple.

 7 ¶ Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

8 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Moïse : Fais-toi un serpent enflammé, et place-le sur une perche ; et il arrivera, que quiconque sera mordu et le regardera, vivra.

 8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

9 Et Moïse fit un serpent de cuivre, et le mit sur une perche ; et il arriva, que lorsqu’un serpent avait mordu un homme, quand il regardait le serpent de cuivre, il vivait.

 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

10 ¶ Et les enfants d’Israël partirent et campèrent à Oboth.

 10 ¶ And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.

11 Et ils partirent d’Oboth, et campèrent à Ijeabarim (Ijjé-Abarim), dans le désert qui est en face de Moab, vers le soleil levant.

 11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ijeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

12 ¶ De là, ils se déplacèrent et campèrent dans le vallée de Zared.

 12 ¶ From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.

13 De là, ils se déplacèrent et campèrent de l’autre côté de l’Arnon, qui est dans le désert, qui sort des confins des Amorites ; car l’Arnon est la frontière de Moab, entre les Moabites et les Amorites.

 13 From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 C’est pourquoi il est dit dans le livre des batailles du SEIGNEUR : Ce qu’il a fait à la mer Rouge, et aux torrents de l’Arnon,

 14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

15 Et le cours des torrents qui descend vers la demeure d’Ar, et qui s’appuie sur la frontière de Moab.

 15 And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab.

16 Et de là ils vinrent à Beer, c’est là le puits dont le SEIGNEUR dit à Moïse : Réunis le peuple, et je leur donnerai de l’eau.

 16 And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the LORD spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

17 ¶ Alors Israël chanta ce cantique Monte, ô puits ; chantez-lui.

 17 ¶ Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

18 Puits que les princes ont creusé, que les nobles du peuple ont creusé, par la directive du législateur avec leurs bâtons. Et, du désert, ils vinrent à Mattanah ;

 18 The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:

19 Et de Mattanah à Nahaliel ; Et de Nahaliel à Bamoth ;

 19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:

20 Et de Bamoth en la vallée, qui est dans la région de Moab, au sommet du Pisgah, qui regarde vers Jeshimon.

 20 And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.

21 ¶ Et Israël envoya des messagers à Sihon, roi des Amorites disant:

 21 ¶ And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

22 Permets que je passe par ton pays ; nous ne nous détournerons pas dans les champs, ni dans les vignes, nous ne boirons pas l’eau du puits ; mais nous irons par le grand chemin du roi jusqu’à ce que nous ayons passé tes limites.

 22 Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king’s high way, until we be past thy borders.

23 Mais Sihon ne permit pas à Israël de passer par sa frontière ; et Sihon réunit tout son peuple, et sortit à la rencontre d’Israël vers le désert, et il vint à Jahaz, et combattit contre Israël.

 23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

24 Et Israël le fit passer au tranchant de l’épée, et prit possession de sa terre, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’à Jabbok, même jusqu’aux enfants d’Ammon ; car la frontière des enfants d’Ammon était forte.

 24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

25 Et Israël prit toutes ces villes, et Israël demeura dans toutes les villes des Amorites, à Heshbon (Hesbon), et dans toutes les villes de son ressort.

 25 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

26 Car Heshbon (Hesbon) était la ville de Sihon, roi des Amorites (Amoréens), qui s’était battu contre le précédent roi de Moab, et avait pris tout sa terre jusqu’à l’Arnon.

 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.

27 C’est pourquoi ceux qui disent des Proverbes , disent : Venez à Heshbon (Hesbon) ; que la ville de Sihon soit bâtie et réparée.

 27 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:

28 Car un feu est sorti de Heshbon (Hesbon), une flamme de la ville de Sihon ; elle a consumé Ar de Moab, et les seigneurs des hauts lieux de l’Arnon.

 28 For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.

29 Malheur à toi, Moab ! tu es perdu, ô peuple de Chemosh ; il a donné ses fils qui se sont échappés, et ses filles en captivité à Sihon, roi des Amorites.

 29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 Nous avons tiré sur eux ; Heshbon (Hesbon) a péri, jusqu’à Dibon ; nous les avons dévasté même jusqu’à Nophah, qui atteint jusqu’à Medeba.

 30 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.

31 ¶ Ainsi Israël demeura dans la terre des Amorites (Amoréens).

 31 ¶ Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

32 Et Moïse envoya épier Jaazer, et ils prirent les villages de son ressort, et dépossédèrent les Amorites qui y étaient.

 32 And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

33 ¶ Et ils tournèrent et montèrent par le chemin de Bashan ; et Og, roi de Bashan, alla contre eux, lui et tout son peuple, pour livrer bataille à Edrei.

 33 ¶ And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

34 Mais le SEIGNEUR dit à Moïse : N’aie pas peur ; car je l’ai livré en ta main, et tout son peuple, et sa terre ; et tu lui feras comme tu as fait à Sihon, roi des Amorites, qui demeurait à Heshbon (Hesbon).

 34 And the LORD said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

35 Ils le frappèrent donc, lui et ses fils, et tout son peuple, jusqu’à ce qu’il n’en reste pas un vivant ; et ils possédèrent sa terre.

 35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
