1 Et les enfants d’Israël partirent, et campèrent dans les plaines de Moab, de ce côté du Jourdain près de Jéricho.

 1 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.

2 ¶ Et Balak, le fils de Zippor, vit tout ce qu’Israël avait fait aux Amorites.

 2 ¶ And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

3 Et Moab eut une grande peur du peuple, parce qu’ils étaient nombreux ; et Moab fut angoissé, à cause des enfants d’Israël.

 3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

4 Et Moab dit aux anciens de Midian (Madian) : Maintenant cette compagnie dévorera-t-elle tout ce qui est autour de nous, comme le bœuf broute l’herbe du champ. Or Balak, le fils de Zippor , était roi de Moab, en ce temps-là.

 4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

5 Et il envoya des messagers à Balaam, le fils de Beor, à Pethor, qui est sur le fleuve, au pays des enfants de son peuple, pour l’appeler disant: Voici, un peuple est sorti d’Égypte ; voici, il couvre la surface de la terre, et il reste en face de moi.

 5 He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:

6 Viens donc maintenant, je te prie ; maudis-moi ce peuple, car il est plus puissant que moi. Peut-être prévaudrai-je, et que nous puissions le frapper, et que je puisse le chasser du pays ; car je sais que celui que tu bénis est béni, et que celui que tu maudis est maudit.

 6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

7 Et les anciens de Moab et les anciens de Midian (Madian) s’en allèrent avec en leur main les salaires de la divination ; et ils vinrent à Balaam, et lui dirent les paroles de Balak.

 7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.

8 Et il leur dit : Passez ici cette nuit, et je vous rapporterai réponse, selon que le SEIGNEUR me parlera. Et les princes de Moab restèrent chez Balaam.

 8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

9 Et Dieu vint à Balaam, et dit : Qui sont ces hommes que tu as chez toi ?

 9 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?

10 Et Balaam dit à Dieu : Balak, le fils de Zippor (Tsipor), roi de Moab, a envoyé vers moi disant:

 10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,

11 Voici un peuple est sorti d’Égypte qui couvre la surface de la terre ; viens maintenant, maudis-le-moi ; peut-être pourrai-je le vaincre, et le chasser.

 11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.

12 Et Dieu dit à Balaam : Tu n’iras pas avec eux, tu ne maudiras pas ce peuple, car il est béni.

 12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.

13 Et Balaam se leva le matin, et dit aux princes de Balak : Allez dans votre pays ; car le SEIGNEUR refuse de me laisser aller avec vous.

 13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

14 Et les princes de Moab se levèrent, et allèrent vers Balak, et dirent Balaam refuse de venir avec nous.

 14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

15 ¶ Et Balak lui envoya encore des princes, plus nombreux et plus honorables que ceux-là ;

 15 ¶ And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.

16 Et ils vinrent à Balaam, et lui dirent ainsi dit Balak, le fils de Zippor (Tsipor) : Que rien, je te prie, ne t’empêche de venir vers moi ;

 16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

17 Car je te rendrai beaucoup d’honneurs, et je ferai tout ce que tu me diras ; viens donc, je te prie, maudis-moi ce peuple.

 17 For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.

18 Et Balaam répondit, et dit aux serviteurs de Balak : Si Balak me donnait sa maison pleine d’argent et d’or, je ne pourrais aller au-delà de la parole du SEIGNEUR, mon Dieu, pour faire moins ou plus.

 18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.

19 Maintenant donc, attendez ici, je vous prie, vous aussi cette nuit, afin que je sache ce que le SEIGNEUR aura de plus à me dire.

 19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.

20 Et Dieu vint à Balaam la nuit, et lui dit : Si les hommes viennent pour t’appeler, lève-toi, et va avec eux ; mais tu feras la parole que je te dirai.

 20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.

21 Et Balaam se leva le matin, et sella son ânesse, et s’en alla avec les princes de Moab.

 21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 ¶ Et le courroux de Dieu s’embrasa parce qu’il s’en allait ; et l’ange du SEIGNEUR se tint dans le chemin en adversaire contre lui. Or il était monté sur son ânesse, et ses deux serviteurs étaient avec lui.

 22 ¶ And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

23 Et l’ânesse vit l’ange du SEIGNEUR se tenant dans le chemin, son épée dégainée en sa main ; et l’ânesse se détourna du chemin et s’en alla dans le champ, et Balaam frappa l’ânesse pour la faire retourner dans le chemin.

 23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

24 Mais l’ange du SEIGNEUR se tint dans un sentier de vignes, ayant un mur d’un côté et un mur de l’autre.

 24 But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

25 Et quand l’ânesse vit l’ange du SEIGNEUR, elle se serra contre le mur, et elle le pied de Balaam écrasa contre le mur, et il la frappa de nouveau.

 25 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

26 Et l’ange du SEIGNEUR alla plus loin, et se tint dans un lieu étroit où il n’y avait aucun chemin pour se tourner soit à main droite, soit à gauche.

 26 And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

27 Et quand l’ânesse vit l’ange du SEIGNEUR, elle se coucha sous Balaam, et le courroux de Balaam s’embrasa, et il frappa l’ânesse avec un bâton.

 27 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

28 Et le SEIGNEUR ouvrit la bouche de l’ânesse, et elle dit à Balaam : Que t’ai-je fait, que tu m’aies frappée trois fois ?

 28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

29 Et Balaam dit à l’ânesse : C’est que tu t’es moquée de moi. Que n’ai-je une épée en ma main ! je t’aurais déjà tuée.

 29 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

30 Et l’ânesse dit à Balaam : Ne suis-je pas ton ânesse, sur laquelle tu as monté depuis que je suis à toi jusqu’à ce jour ? Ai-je l’habitude de te faire ainsi ? Et il dit : Non.

 30 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

31 Alors le SEIGNEUR ouvrit les yeux de Balaam, et il vit l’ange du SEIGNEUR se tenant dans le chemin, son épée dégainée en sa main ; et il baissa sa tête et tomba sur son visage.

 31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

32 Et l’ange du SEIGNEUR lui dit : Pourquoi as-tu frappé ton ânesse ces trois fois ? Voici, je suis sorti pour m’opposer à toi, parce que ton chemin est pervers devant moi.

 32 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

33 Et l’ânesse m’a vu, et s’est détournée devant moi ces trois fois ; si elle ne s’était pas détournée de moi, certainement je t’aurais même tué et elle aurait eu la vie sauve.

 33 And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

34 Alors Balaam dit à l’ange du SEIGNEUR : J’ai péché ; car je ne savais pas que tu te tenais dans le chemin contre moi ; maintenant donc, si cela te déplaît, je m’en retournerai.

 34 And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

35 Et l’ange du SEIGNEUR dit à Balaam : Va avec les hommes ; mais tu ne diras que la parole que je te dirai. Et Balaam s’en alla avec les princes de Balak.

 35 And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 ¶ Et quand Balak entendit que Balaam venait, il sortit à sa rencontre, jusqu’à la ville de Moab, qui est sur la frontière de l’Arnon, qui est à l’extrémité du territoire.

 36 ¶ And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.

37 Et Balak dit à Balaam : N’ai-je pas instamment envoyé vers toi, pour t’appeler ? Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu vers moi ? Ne puis-je vraiment pas te rendre honneur ?

 37 And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?

38 Et Balaam dit à Balak : Voici, je suis venu vers toi ; ai-je maintenant le droit de dire quoi que ce soit ? Je dirai la parole que Dieu met dans ma bouche.

 38 And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

39 Et Balaam s’en alla avec Balak, et ils vinrent à Kijiathhuzoth.

 39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth.

40 Et Balak offrit des bœufs et des moutons, et en envoya à Balaam et aux princes qui étaient avec lui.

 40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

41 Et il arriva, le matin, que Balak prit Balaam, et le fit monter aux hauts lieux de Baal, et de là il vit la partie la plus éloignée du peuple.

 41 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
