1 Et Israël habitait en Shitim (Sittim) ; et le peuple commença à se livrer à la fornication avec les filles de Moab.

 1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

2 Et elles invitèrent le peuple aux sacrifices de leurs dieux ; et le peuple mangea, et s’inclina devant leurs dieux.

 2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

3 Et Israël s’attacha à Baalpeor ; et le courroux du SEIGNEUR s’embrasa contre Israël.

 3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

4 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Moïse : Prends tous les chefs du peuple, et pends-les devant le SEIGNEUR, face au soleil, afin que l’ardeur du courroux du SEIGNEUR se détourne d’Israël.

 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

5 Et Moïse dit aux juges d’Israël : Que chacun de vous tue ses hommes qui se sont attachés à Baalpeor.

 5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

6 ¶ Et voici, un homme des enfants d’Israël vint et amena à ses frères une Midianite, sous le regard de Moïse et de toute la congrégation des enfants d’Israël, qui pleuraient à l’entrée du tabernacle de la congrégation.

 6 ¶ And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

7 Et quand Phinehas, le fils d’Eleazar, fils d’Aaron, le prêtre, le vit, et il se leva du milieu de la congrégation, et prit un javelot dans sa main ;

 7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

8 Et il entra après l’homme israélite dans la tente, et les transperça tous deux, l’homme d’Israël et la femme à travers son ventre. Ainsi la plaie fut arrêtée de dessus les enfants d’Israël.

 8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

9 Et ceux qui moururent de la plaie furent vingt-quatre mille.

 9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

10 Et le SEIGNEUR parla à Moïse disant:

 10 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

11 Phinehas, le fils d’Eleazar, fils d’Aaron, le prêtre, a détourné ma colère de dessus les enfants d’Israël, tandis qu’il a été animé de mon zèle au milieu d’eux, tellement que je n’ai pas consumé les enfants d’Israël dans ma jalousie.

 11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

12 C’est pourquoi, dis : Voici, je lui donne mon alliance de paix ;

 12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

13 Et ce sera pour lui et pour sa semence après lui, l’alliance d’une prêtrise perpétuelle, parce qu’il a été zélé pour son Dieu, et a fait une expiation pour les enfants d’Israël.

 13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

14 Or le nom de l’homme israélite qui fut tué, savoir, lequel fut tué avec la femme midianite, était Zimri, le fils de Salu, un prince d’une maison importante des Simeonites.

 14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

15 Et le nom de la femme midianite qui fut tuée était Cozbi, la fille de Zur (Tsur) , il était à la tête d’un peuple, et d’une maison importante dans Midian (Madian).

 15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

16 ¶ Et le SEIGNEUR parla à Moïse disant:

 16 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

17 Tourmentez les Midianites (Madianites), et frappez-les ;

 17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them:

18 Car ils vous ont tourmentés par les ruses, par lesquelles ils vous ont séduits dans l’affaire de Peor, et dans l’affaire de Cozbi, la fille d’un prince de Midian (Madian), leur sœur, qui a été tuée au jour de la plaie causée par Peor.

 18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.
