1 Lorsque tu t'assieds pour manger avec un dirigeant, considère avec diligence ce qui est devant toi:

 1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

2 Et mets un couteau à ta gorge, si tu es un homme avec un gros appétit.

 2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

3 Ne désire pas ses friandises: car elles sont une nourriture trompeuse.

 3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

4 Ne travaille pas pour devenir riche: renonce à ta propre sagesse.

 4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

5 Poseras-tu tes yeux sur ce qui n’est pas? Car assurément les richesses se font des ailes; elles s'envolent comme un aigle vers le ciel.

 5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

6 Ne mange pas le pain de celui qui a l'œil mauvais, ne désire pas non plus ses mets exquis:

 6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

7 Car comme il pense dans son cœur ainsi est-il: Mange et bois, te dit-il; mais son cœur n'est pas avec toi.

 7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

8 Le morceau que tu as mangé, tu le vomiras, et tu perdras tes paroles douces.

 8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

9 Ne parle pas aux oreilles d’un insensé: car il méprisera la sagesse de tes paroles.

 9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

10 N’enlève pas l'ancien repère, et n'entre pas dans les champs des orphelins de père:

 10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

11 Car leur rédempteur est puissant; il plaidera leur cause contre toi.

 11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

12 Applique ton cœur à l'instruction et tes oreilles aux paroles de la connaissance.

 12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

13 Ne te retiens pas de corriger l’enfant: car si tu le frappes avec le bâton, il ne mourra pas.

 13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

14 Tu le frapperas avec le bâton, et tu délivreras son âme de l’enfer.

 14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

15 Mon fils, si ton cœur est sage, mon cœur s'en réjouira, c’est-à-dire le mien.

 15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

16 Oui, mes reins se réjouiront lorsque tes lèvres diront des choses droites.

 16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

17 Ne laisse pas ton cœur envier les pécheurs: mais sois dans la crainte du SEIGNEUR tout le long du jour.

 17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

18 Car assurément il y a une fin; et ton attente ne sera pas retranchée.

 18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

19 Entends, mon fils, et sois sage, et dirige ton cœur dans le chemin.

 19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

20 Ne sois pas parmi les buveurs de vin; parmi ceux qui font excès de chair:

 20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

21 Car l’ivrogne et le glouton arriveront à la pauvreté: et la somnolence revêtira un homme de haillons.

 21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

22 Écoute ton père qui t'a engendré, et ne méprise pas ta mère lorsqu’elle sera âgée.

 22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23 Achète la vérité, et ne la vends pas; également la sagesse, et l’instruction, et la compréhension.

 23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24 Le père de l’homme droit se réjouira grandement: et celui qui engendre un enfant sage se réjouira en lui.

 24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

25 Ton père et ta mère seront contents, et celle qui t'a enfanté se réjouira.

 25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

26 Mon fils, donne-moi ton cœur, et que tes yeux observent mes agissements.

 26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

27 Car une prostituée est un fossé profond; et la femme étrangère est une fosse étroite.

 27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

28 Elle se tient aussi en embuscade comme après une proie, et elle augmente le nombre des transgresseurs parmi les hommes.

 28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

29 Qui a du malheur? Qui a de la douleur? Qui a des contestations? Qui a de vains bavardages? Qui a les blessures sans cause? Qui a la rougeur des yeux?

 29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30 Ceux qui s'attardent auprès du vin; ceux qui vont chercher le vin mêlé.

 30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31 Ne regarde pas le vin lorsqu’il est rouge, lorsqu’il donne sa couleur dans la coupe, lorsqu’il se meut correctement.

 31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

32 À la fin il mord comme un serpent et pique comme une vipère.

 32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

33 Tes yeux contempleront les femmes étrangères, et ton cœur proférera des choses perverses.

 33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

34 Oui, tu seras comme celui qui se couche au milieu de la mer, ou comme celui qui se couche au sommet d'un mât.

 34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

35 Ils m’ont frappé, diras-tu et je ne fus pas malade; ils m’ont battu, et je ne le sentis pas: Quand me réveillerai-je? Je le chercherai encore.

 35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
