1 Ce sont aussi des Proverbes de Salomon, que les hommes d'Ezéchias, roi de Judah copièrent.

 1 These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

2 C’est la gloire de Dieu que de dissimuler une chose: mais l’honneur des rois est d’approfondir un sujet.

 2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

3 Le ciel pour sa hauteur, et la terre pour sa profondeur, et le cœur des rois est insondable.

 3 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

4 Retire les scories de l'argent, et il en sortira un vase pour l'orfèvre.

 4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.

5 Retire les immoraux de devant le roi, et son trône sera établi dans la droiture.

 5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

6 Ne te fais pas remarquer en présence du roi, et ne te tiens pas à la place des grands hommes:

 6 Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:

7 Car il vaut mieux qu'il te soit dit, Monte ici; plutôt que tu doives être abaissé en présence du prince que tes yeux ont vu.

 7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.

8 Ne sors pas à la hâte pour t’opposer, de peur que tu ne saches que faire à la fin, lorsque ton voisin t'aura rendu honteux.

 8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

9 Plaide ta cause avec ton voisin lui-même; et ne révèle pas un secret à un autre:

 9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:

10 De peur que celui qui l'entend ne te rende honteux, et que ton infamie ne s’éloigne pas.

 10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

11 Une parole dite à propos est comme des pommes d'or damasquinées d'argent:

 11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.

12 Comme une boucle d’oreille d'or et un ornement d'or fin, ainsi est un réprobateur sage pour l'oreille obéissante.

 12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

13 Comme le froid de la neige au temps de la moisson, ainsi est un messager fidèle à ceux qui l'envoient: car il délasse l'âme de ses maîtres.

 13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.

14 Quiconque se vante d’un faux don est comme des nuages et du vent sans pluie.

 14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

15 Par une longue patience un prince est persuadé, et une langue douce brise les os.

 15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

16 As-tu trouvé du miel? manges juste ce qu'il te faut, de peur que tu n'en sois rempli et ne le vomisses.

 16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

17 Retire ton pied de la maison de ton voisin; de peur qu'il ne se lasse de toi et qu'ainsi il ne te haïsse.

 17 Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour’s house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.

18 Un homme qui rend un faux témoignage contre son voisin est un maillet, et une épée, et une flèche aiguë.

 18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19 Faire confiance à un homme infidèle à un moment difficile est comme une dent cassée et un pied démis.

 19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

20 Comme celui qui ôte son vêtement par temps froid, et comme du vinaigre sur le nitre, ainsi est celui qui chante des chansons à un cœur abattu.

 20 As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.

21 Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui du pain à manger; et s'il a soif, donne-lui de l'eau à boire:

 21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

22 Car tu amasseras des charbons ardents sur sa tête, et le SEIGNEUR te récompensera.

 22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

23 Le vent du nord chasse la pluie: de même un visage en colère chasse une langue médisante.

 23 The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

24 Mieux vaut demeurer au coin d’un toit, qu’avec une femme querelleuse et dans une grande maison.

 24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

25 Comme de l'eau fraîche pour une âme altérée, ainsi sont les bonnes nouvelles venant d'un pays lointain.

 25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

26 Un homme droit tombant à terre devant l’homme immoral est comme une fontaine trouble et une source polluée.

 26 A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.

27 Il n’est pas bon de manger beaucoup de miel: de même pour les hommes de rechercher leur propre gloire n’est pas la gloire.

 27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

28 Celui qui n’a aucune autorité sur son propre esprit est comme une ville qui est démolie, et sans murailles.

 28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
