1 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Samuel : Jusqu’à quand mèneras-tu deuil sur Saul, vu que je l’ai rejeté pour qu’il ne règne plus sur Israël ? Remplis ta corne d’huile et va ; je t’enverrai vers Jesse, le Bethlehemite ; car je me suis pourvu un roi parmi ses fils.

 1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2 Et Samuel dit : Comment puis-je aller ? Si Saul l’apprend, il me tuera. Et le SEIGNEUR dit : Prends avec toi une génisse, et tu diras : Je suis venu pour sacrifier au SEIGNEUR.

 2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.

3 Et tu appelleras Jesse au sacrifice ; et je te montrerai ce que tu auras à faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te dirai.

 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

4 Et Samuel fit ce que le SEIGNEUR avait dit, et vint à Bethlehem ; et les anciens de la ville tremblèrent à sa rencontre, et dirent : Viens-tu avec paix ?

 4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

5 Et il dit : Avec paix je suis venu pour sacrifier au SEIGNEUR ; sanctifiez-vous, et venez avec moi au sacrifice. Et il sanctifia Jesse et ses fils, et les appela au sacrifice.

 5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 ¶ Et il arriva que, comme ils entraient, il vit Eliab, et dit : Certainement l’oint du SEIGNEUR est devant lui.

 6 ¶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’S anointed is before him.

7 Mais le SEIGNEUR dit à Samuel : Ne regarde pas son apparence, ni à la hauteur de sa stature ; parce que je l’ai rejeté ; car le SEIGNEUR ne regarde pas à ce que l’homme regarde ; l’homme regarde à l’apparence extérieure, mais le SEIGNEUR regarde au cœur.

 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

8 Et Jesse appela Abinadab, et le fit passer devant Samuel ; mais il dit : Le Seigneur n’a pas non plus choisi celui-ci.

 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.

9 Et Jesse fit passer Shammah ; Et il (Samuel) dit : Le Seigneur n’a pas non plus choisi celui-ci.

 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.

10 Jesse fit passer ainsi ses sept fils devant Samuel. Et Samuel dit à Jesse : Le SEIGNEUR n’a pas choisi ceux-ci.

 10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.

11 Et Samuel dit à Jesse : Sont-ce là tous tes enfants ? Et il dit : Il reste encore le plus jeune ; mais, voici, il garde les moutons. Et Samuel dit à Jesse : Envoie-le chercher ; car nous ne nous mettrons pas à table jusqu’à ce qu’il soit venu ici.

 11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

12 Et il envoya et le fit venir. Or il avait le teint vermeil, et de plus une magnifique apparence et beau de visage. Et le SEIGNEUR dit : à Samuel : Lève-toi et oins-le ; car c’est celui-là.

 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

13 Alors Samuel prit la corne d’huile, et l’oignit au milieu de ses frères, et l’Esprit du SEIGNEUR vint sur David depuis ce jour-là. Puis Samuel se leva, et s’en alla à Ramah.

 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

14 ¶ Et l’Esprit du SEIGNEUR se retira de Saul, et un esprit malin du SEIGNEUR le troublait.

 14 ¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

15 Et les serviteurs de Saul lui dirent : Voici, un esprit malin de Dieu te trouble.

 15 And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16 Que notre seigneur maintenant commande tes serviteurs qui sont devant toi, de chercher un homme qui soit un talentueux joueur de harpe ; et il arrivera que, quand l’esprit malin de Dieu sera sur toi, il jouera de sa main et tu seras bien.

 16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17 Et Saul dit à ses serviteurs : Trouvez-moi donc un homme qui sache bien jouer, et amenez-le moi.

 17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18 Et l’un de ses serviteurs répondit, et dit : Voici, j’ai vu un fils de Jesse, le Bethlehemite, qui a du talent pour jouer ; c’est un homme puissant et vaillant, un guerrier, qui agit prudemment, et une personne avenante, et le SEIGNEUR est avec lui.

 18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.

19 ¶ Alors Saul envoya des messagers à Jesse, et dirent : Envoie-moi David, ton fils, qui est avec les moutons.

 19 ¶ Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.

20 Et Jesse prit un âne chargé de pain, et une bouteille de vin, et un chevreau, et les envoya à Saul, par David, son fils.

 20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

21 Et David vint vers Saul, et se présenta devant lui ; et Saul l’aima beaucoup, et il devint son porteur d’armes.

 21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

22 Et Saul envoya vers Jesse disant : Que David, je te prie, se tienne devant moi ; car il a trouvé faveur à mes yeux.

 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.

23 Et il arrivait que, quand l’esprit malin de Dieu, était sur Saul, David prenait la harpe, et en jouait de sa main ; ainsi Saul était apaisé et se trouvait bien, et l’esprit malin se retirait de lui.

 23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
