1 Et David s’enfuit de Naioth, en Ramah, et vint et dit devant Jonathan : Qu’ai-je fait ? Quelle est mon iniquité ? Et quel est mon péché devant ton père, qu’il cherche ma vie ?

 1 And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

2 Et il lui dit : Â Dieu ne plaise ; tu ne mourras pas. Voici, mon père ne fait aucune chose, ni grande ni petite, qu’il ne me la raconte, et pourquoi mon père me cacherait-il cette chose-là ? Il n’en est rien.

 2 And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

3 Et David jura encore, et dit : Ton père sait certainement que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et il aura dit : Que Jonathan ne sache pas cela de peur qu’il n’en soit attristé ; mais assurément, de même que le SEIGNEUR est vivant, et comme ton âme est vivante, il n’y a qu’un pas entre moi et la mort.

 3 And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

4 Alors Jonathan dit à David : Que tout ce que ton âme désire, je le ferai pour toi.

 4 Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

5 Et David dit à Jonathan : Voici, c’est demain la nouvelle lune, et je ne devrai pas manquer de m’asseoir avec le roi pour manger ; mais laisse-moi aller afin que je me cache dans les champs jusqu’au troisième soir.

5 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.

6 Si ton père s’aperçoit de mon absence, tu diras alors : David m’a demandé instamment la permission de courir à Bethlehem, sa ville, car il y a là un sacrifice annuel pour toute sa famille.

 6 If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

7 S’il dit ainsi : C’est bien ; ton serviteur aura paix ; mais s’il est irrité, alors tu peux être sûr que le mal est arrêté de sa part.

 7 If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.

8 C’est pourquoi tu agiras avec bienveillance envers ton serviteur, car tu as fait entrer ton serviteur dans une alliance du SEIGNEUR avec toi ; s’il y a iniquité en moi, tue-moi toi-même ; car pourquoi me mènerais-tu à ton père ?

 8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

9 Et Jonathan dit : Que cela soit loin de toi ; car si je savais avec certitude quel mal mon père avait arrêté de faire venir sur toi, ne te le dirais-je pas ?

 9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

10 Alors David dit à Jonathan : Qui me le dira ? Et si ton père te répond durement ?

 10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?

11 ¶Et Jonathan dit à David : Viens, et sortons aux champs. Et ils sortirent tous les deux aux champs.

 11 ¶ And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

12 Et Jonathan dit à David : Ô SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël, quand j’aurai sondé mon père demain n’importe quand, ou après-demain, et voici, si c’est bien pour David, et qu’alors je n’envoie pas vers toi et ne te le démontre pas,

 12 And Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee;

13 Que le SEIGNEUR fasse ainsi et beaucoup plus à Jonathan ; mais s’il plaît à mon père de te faire du mal, alors je te le dirai, et je te laisserai aller, afin que tu puisses aller en paix ; et que le SEIGNEUR soit avec toi comme il a été avec mon père.

 13 The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

14 Et tu me démontreras tant que je suis encore vivant la bienveillance du SEIGNEUR, afin que je ne meure pas,

 14 And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:

15 Et aussi tu ne retrancheras pas ta bienveillance de ma maison à toujours ; non pas même quand le SEIGNEUR aura retranché tous les ennemis de David de dessus la face de la terre

 15 But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

16 Ainsi Jonathan fit une alliance avec la maison de David, disant : Que le SEIGNEUR le redemande de la main des ennemis de David.

 16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David’s enemies.

17 Et Jonathan fit encore jurer David par l’amour qu’il lui portait ; car il l’aimait comme il aimait son âme.

 17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

18 Alors Jonathan dit à David : C’est demain la nouvelle lune, et on s’apercevra de ton absence, parce que ton siège sera vide ;

 18 Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

19 Et quand tu auras attendu trois jours, tu descendras alors rapidement, et tu viendras au lieu où tu t’étais caché le jour de l’affaire, et tu demeureras près de la pierre d’Ezel.

 19 And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

20 Et je tirerai trois flèches à côté de celle-ci, comme si je tirais vers une cible.

 20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.

21 Et voici, j’enverrai un jeune garçon, en lui disant : Va, trouve les flèches. Si je dis expressément au jeune garçon : Voici, les flèches sont de ce côté-ci de toi, prends-les ; alors viens, car il y a paix pour toi, et il n’y a pas de mal ; de même que le SEIGNEUR est vivant.

 21 And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the LORD liveth.

22 Mais si je dis au jeune homme : Voici, les flèches sont au-delà de toi ; va-t’en car le SEIGNEUR te renvoie.

 22 But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.

23 Mais quant au propos que toi et moi avons tenu, voici, le SEIGNEUR est entre toi et moi à toujours.

 23 And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever.

24 ¶ David se cacha donc dans les champs ; et la nouvelle lune étant venue, le roi s’assit pour manger.

 24 ¶ So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.

25 Et le roi s’assit sur son siège comme les autres fois, c’est-à-dire sur le siège contre le mur ; et Jonathan se leva, et Abner s’assit à côté de Saul, et la place de David était vide.

 25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty.

26 Néanmoins Saul n’en dit rien ce jour-là ; car il pensait : Il lui est arrivé quelque chose, il n’est pas net ; certainement il n’est pas net.

 26 Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

27 Et il arriva le lendemain qui était le second jour du mois, que la place de David était vide ; et Saul dit à Jonathan, son fils : Pourquoi le fils de Jesse n’est-il pas venu manger ni hier ni aujourd’hui ?

 27 And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?

28 Et Jonathan répondit à Saul : David m’a demandé instamment d’aller jusqu’à Bethlehem ;

 28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:

29 Et il a dit : Laisse-moi aller, je te prie ; car nous avons un sacrifice de famille dans la ville, et mon frère m’a recommandé de m’y trouver ; et maintenant si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, laisse-moi m’en aller, je te prie, afin de voir mes frères. C’est pourquoi il n’est pas venu à la table du roi.

 29 And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.

30 Alors la colère de Saul s’embrasa contre Jonathan, et il lui dit : Toi, fils de la perverse et rebelle femme, ne sais-je pas que tu as choisi le fils de Jesse à ta propre honte, et à la honte de la nudité de ta mère ?

 30 Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother’s nakedness?

31 Car tant que le fils de Jesse vivra sur la terre, tu ne seras pas établi, ni toi, ni ton royaume. C’est pourquoi maintenant envoie-le chercher, et amène-le-moi ; car il mourra assurément.

 31 For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

32 Et Jonathan répondit à Saul, son père et lui dit : Pourquoi serait-il tué ? Qu’a-t-il fait ?

 32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?

33 Et Saul jeta son javelot contre lui pour le frapper. Alors Jonathan sut que son père avait décidé de faire tuer David.

 33 And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

34 Aussi Jonathan se leva de la table dans une ardente colère, et ne prit pas son repas le second jour du mois, car il était affligé à cause de David, parce que son père l’avait outragé.

 34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

35 ¶ Et il arriva au matin, que Jonathan sortit aux champs, au moment assigné avec David ; et un petit garçon avec lui ;

 35 ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

36 Et il dit à ce garçon : Cours, trouve donc les flèches que je vais tirer. Et comme le garçon courait, Jonathan tira une flèche au-delà de lui.

 36 And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

37 Et quand le garçon vint jusqu’au lieu où était la flèche que Jonathan avait tirée, Jonathan cria après le garçon, et lui dit la flèche n’est-elle pas au-delà de toi ?

 37 And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?

38 Et Jonathan cria après le garçon : Vite, hâte-toi, ne t’arrête pas. Et le garçon de Jonathan ramassa les flèches, et vint vers son maître.

 38 And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan’s lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

39 Mais le garçon ne savait rien ; seuls Jonathan et David connaissaient l’affaire.

 39 But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

40 Et Jonathan donna ses armes au garçon qu’il avait, et lui dit : Va, porte les à la ville.

 40 And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

41 ¶ Et dès que le garçon partit, David se leva d’où il était, vers le Sud, et tomba son visage contre terre, et s’inclina trois fois ; et ils s’embrassèrent l’un l’autre, et pleurèrent tous deux, jusqu’à ce que David soit épuisé.

 41 ¶ And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

42 Et Jonathan dit à David : Va en paix, puisque nous avons juré tous deux, au nom du SEIGNEUR, en disant : Le SEIGNEUR sera entre moi et toi, et entre ma semence et ta semence à toujours. Et David se leva et s’en alla, et Jonathan rentra dans la ville.

 42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
