1 Et David alla à Nob vers Ahimelech, le prêtre ; et Ahimelech avait peur de rencontrer David, et lui dit : Pourquoi es-tu seul, sans personne avec toi ?

 1 Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?

2 Alors David dit à Ahimelech, le prêtre : Le roi m’a commandé une affaire, et m’a dit : Que personne ne sache rien de l’affaire pour laquelle je t’envoie, et de ce que je t’ai commandé. Et j’ai assigné mes serviteurs à tel endroit.

 2 And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

3 Maintenant donc qu’as-tu sous ta main ? Donne-moi cinq miches de pain, ou ce qu’il y a.

 3 Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.

4 Et le prêtre répondit à David, et dit : Il n’y a pas de pain ordinaire sous la main, mais du pain sacré, si les jeunes hommes se sont gardés des femmes.

 4 And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

5 Et David répondit au prêtre, et lui dit : En vérité les femmes ont été éloignées de nous environ trois jours depuis que je suis sorti, et les vases des jeunes hommes sont saints, et le pain est en quelque sorte ordinaire, oui, bien qu’il était sanctifié aujourd’hui dans le vase.

 5 And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.

6 Le prêtre lui donna donc le pain sacré ; car il n’y avait là pas d’autre pain que le pain de présentation qui avait été ôté de devant le SEIGNEUR, pour remettre du pain chaud le jour où on enlevait l’autre.

 6 So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

7 Or un certain homme d’entre les serviteurs de Saul était là ce jour-là, retenu devant le SEIGNEUR, et son nom était Doeg, un Edomite, le plus puissant des bergers qu’avait Saul.

 7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.

8 ¶ Et David dit à Ahimelech : N’as-tu pas sous la main une lance ou une épée ? Car je n’ai pas apporté mon épée ni mes armes avec moi, parce que l’affaire du roi était pressante.

 8 ¶ And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.

9 Et le prêtre dit : Voici l’épée de Goliath, le Philistin, que tu as tué dans la vallée de Elah, elle est enveloppée dans un drap, derrière l’éphod ; si tu veux la prendre, prends-la ; car il n’y en a pas d’autre ici que celle-là. Et David dit : Il n’y en a pas de pareille ; donne-la-moi.

 9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

10 ¶ Et David se leva, et s’enfuit ce jour-là par peur de Saul, et alla vers Achish, le roi de Gath.

 10 ¶ And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

11 Et les serviteurs d’Achish lui dirent : N’est-ce pas ici ce David, le roi du pays ? N’est-ce pas celui dont on disait, en chantant dans les danses : Saul a tué ses mille, et David ses dix mille ?

 11 And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

12 Et David mit ces paroles dans son cœur, et eut une fort grande peur d’Achish, le roi de Gath.

 12 And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

13 Et il changea son comportement devant eux, et feignit l’insensé entre leurs mains ; il faisait des marques sur la porte, et laissait couler sa salive sur sa barbe.

 13 And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

14 Alors Achish dit à ses serviteurs : Voici, vous voyez que cet homme est fou ; pourquoi donc me l’avez-vous amené ?

 14 Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?

15 Ai-je besoin d’hommes fous, que vous m’ayez amené cet individu, pour faire le fou en ma présence ? Cet individu entrerait-il dans ma maison ?

 15 Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
