1 Et il arriva que, quand Saul fut revenu de la poursuite des Philistins, on lui rapporta, disant : Voici, David est au désert d’Enguedi.

 1 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.

2 Alors Saul prit trois mille hommes d’élite de tout Israël, et alla chercher David et ses hommes, sur les rochers des bouquetins.

 2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

3 Et il arriva aux parcs à moutons, le long du chemin, et il y avait là une caverne, dans laquelle Saul entra pour se couvrir les pieds ; et David et ses hommes se tenaient au fond de la caverne.

 3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.

4 Et les hommes de David lui dirent : Voici le jour dont le SEIGNEUR t’a dit : Voici, je livrerai ton ennemi en ta main, afin que tu puisses lui faire selon qu’il te semblera bon. Et David se leva et coupa secrètement le pan de la robe de Saul.

 4 And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily.

5 Et il arriva, après cela, que le cœur de David battait fort, par ce qu’il avait coupé le pan de la robe Saul,

 5 And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

6 Et il dit à ses hommes : Que le SEIGNEUR m’empêche de faire une telle chose à mon maître, l’oint du SEIGNEUR, que d’étendre ma main sur lui, puisqu’il est l’oint du SEIGNEUR.

 6 And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

7 Et David retint ses hommes par ces paroles, et il ne leur permit pas de s’élever contre Saul. Puis Saul se leva de la caverne, et continua son chemin.

 7 So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

8 Après cela, David se leva, et sortit de la caverne, et cria après Saul, disant : Mon seigneur le roi. Et quand Saul regarda derrière lui, David pencha son visage contre terre, et s’inclina.

 8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

9 ¶ Et David dit à Saul : Pourquoi écoutes-tu les paroles des hommes qui disent : Voici, David cherche ton mal ?

 9 ¶ And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

10 Voici, tes yeux ont vu, en ce jour, comment le SEIGNEUR t’avait livré aujourd’hui en ma main, dans la caverne, et l’on m’a dit de te tuer ; mais mon œil t’a épargné, et j’ai dit : Je ne porterai pas ma main sur mon seigneur ; car il est l’oint du SEIGNEUR.

 10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S anointed.

11 De plus, mon père, regarde le pan de ta robe en ma main ; car en ce que j’ai coupé le pan de ta robe, et ne t’ai pas tué, sache et vois qu’il n’y a ni de mal ni de transgression en moi, et que je n’ai pas péché contre toi ; et cependant tu fais la chasse à mon âme pour la prendre.

 11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.

12 Le SEIGNEUR jugera entre moi et toi, et le SEIGNEUR me vengera de toi ; mais ma main ne sera pas sur toi.

 12 The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

13 Comme dit le proverbe des anciens : La malveillance vient des malveillants, mais ma main ne sera pas sur toi.

 13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

14 Après qui est sorti le roi d’Israël ? Qui poursuis-tu ? Un chien mort, une puce.

 14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

15 Le SEIGNEUR donc sera juge ; et jugera entre moi et toi, et verra, et plaidera ma cause, et me délivrera de ta main.

 15 The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.

16 ¶ Et il arriva que lorsque David eut achevé de dire ces paroles à Saul, Saul dit : Est-ce bien ta voix, mon fils David ? Et Saul éleva sa voix, et pleura.

 16 ¶ And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.

17 Et il dit à David : Tu es plus droit que moi, car tu m’as rendu le bien tandis que moi je t’ai rendu le mal.

 17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.

18 Et tu as montré aujourd’hui que tu as bien agi à mon égard ; d’autant que le SEIGNEUR m’avait livré en ta main, et tu ne m’as pas tué.

 18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.

19 Car si un homme trouve son ennemi, le laissera-t-il aller sain et sauf ? Que le SEIGNEUR donc te rende du bien pour ce que tu m’as fait aujourd’hui.

 19 For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.

20 Et maintenant, voici, je sais très bien que tu seras roi, et que le royaume d’Israël sera établi en ta main.

 20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.

21 Jure-moi donc maintenant, par le SEIGNEUR, que tu ne retrancheras pas ma semence après moi, et que tu ne détruiras pas mon nom de la maison de mon père.

 21 Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house.

22 Et David le jura à Saul. Alors Saul s’en alla dans sa maison, et David et ses hommes montèrent au lieu fort.

 22 And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.
