1 Et les Ziphites vinrent vers Saul, à Gibeah (Guibeah), disant : David ne se cache-t-il pas à la colline de Hachilah, qui est en face de Jeshimon ?

 1 And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?

2 Alors Saul se leva, et descendit au désert de Ziph, ayant avec lui trois mille hommes d’élite d’Israël, pour chercher David dans le désert de Ziph.

 2 Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

3 Et Saul campa sur la colline de Hachilah, qui est en face de Jeshimon, le long du chemin. Or David habitait dans le désert, et il vit que Saul venait à sa poursuite dans le désert.

 3 And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

4 David envoya donc des espions, et comprit avec certitude que Saul était arrivé.

 4 David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed.

5 ¶ Et David se leva, et alla au lieu où Saul était campé ; et David regarda le lieu où couchait Saul, ainsi qu’Abner, le fils de Ner, le capitaine de son armée et Saul couchait dans le retranchement du camp, et le peuple était campé autour de lui.

 5 ¶ And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.

6 Et David répondit et dit à Ahimelech, le Hittite, et à Abishai, le fils de Zeruiah, frère de Joab, disant : Qui descendra avec moi vers Saul, au camp ? Et Abishai répondit : J’y descendrai avec toi.

 6 Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee.

7 Ainsi David et Abishai vinrent de nuit vers le peuple ; et voici, Saul dormait couché dans le retranchement, et sa lance était plantée en terre à son chevet, et Abner et le peuple étaient couchés autour de lui.

 7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him.

8 Alors Abishai dit à David : Dieu a livré ce jour ton ennemi en ta main ; maintenant donc, laisse-moi le frapper, je te prie, de la lance jusqu’en terre, d’un seul coup, et je ne le frapperai pas une seconde fois.

 8 Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time.

9 Et David dit à Abishai : Ne le détruis pas ; car qui peut étendre sa main sur l’oint du SEIGNEUR et être innocent ?

 9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD’S anointed, and be guiltless?

10 Et David dit encore : De même que le SEIGNEUR est vivant, le SEIGNEUR le frappera, ou que son jour vienne et qu’il meure, ou qu’il descende dans une bataille et périsse.

 10 David said furthermore, As the LORD liveth, the LORD shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

11 Que le SEIGNEUR me garde d’étendre ma main sur l’oint du SEIGNEUR mais, prends maintenant, je te prie, la lance qui est à son chevet, ainsi que la cruche d’eau, et allons-nous-en.

 11 The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’S anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go.

12 David prit donc du chevet de Saul, la lance et la cruche d’eau, et ils s’en allèrent ; et personne ne le vit, ni ne le sut, ni ne s’éveilla ; car tous dormaient, parce que le SEIGNEUR avait fait tomber sur eux un profond sommeil.

 12 So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul’s bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.

13 ¶ Puis David passa de l’autre côté, et se tint au sommet de la colline, loin de là ; il y avait une grande distance entre eux ;

 13 ¶ Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill afar off; a great space being between them:

14 Et David cria au peuple, et à Abner, le fils de Ner, en disant : Ne réponds-tu pas, Abner ? Et Abner répondit, et dit : Qui es-tu, toi qui cries au roi ?

 14 And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king?

15 Et David dit à Abner : N’es-tu pas un vaillant homme ? Et qui est semblable à toi en Israël ? Pourquoi donc n’as-tu pas gardé le roi, ton seigneur ? Car quelqu’un du peuple est venu pour tuer le roi, ton seigneur ;

 15 And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.

16 Ce que tu as fait n’est pas bien. De même que le SEIGNEUR est vivant, vous êtes dignes de mort, parce que vous n’avez pas gardé votre seigneur, l’oint du SEIGNEUR. Et maintenant, regarde où est la lance du roi ainsi que la cruche d’eau qui était à son chevet.

 16 This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster.

17 Et Saul reconnut la voix de David, et dit : Est-ce bien ta voix, mon fils David ? Et David dit : C’est ma voix, mon seigneur, ô roi.

 17 And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.

18 Et il dit : Pourquoi mon seigneur poursuit-il son serviteur ? Qu’ai-je fait ? Et quel mal y a-t-il en ma main ?

 18 And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?

19 Maintenant donc, je te prie, que mon seigneur, le roi, entende les paroles de son serviteur. Si c’est le SEIGNEUR qui te pousse contre moi, qu’il accepte une offrande ; mais si ce sont les enfants d’hommes, qu’ils soient maudits devant le SEIGNEUR, car ils m’ont chassé aujourd’hui, afin que je ne demeure pas dans l’héritage du SEIGNEUR, disant : Va, sers d’autres dieux.

 19 Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.

20 Maintenant donc, que mon sang ne tombe pas en terre devant la face du SEIGNEUR ; car le roi d’Israël est sorti pour chercher une puce, comme on chasse une perdrix dans les montagnes.

 20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.

21 ¶ Alors Saul dit : J’ai péché ; reviens, mon fils David ; car je ne te ferai plus de mal, puisque aujourd’hui mon âme a été précieuse à tes yeux. Voici, j’ai agi follement, et j’ai fait une très grande erreur.

 21 ¶ Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

22 Et David répondit, et dit : Voici la lance du roi ! Et que l’un des jeunes hommes passe ici, et la prenne.

 22 And David answered and said, Behold the king’s spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.

23 Le SEIGNEUR rendra à chacun sa rectitude et sa fidélité ; car le SEIGNEUR t’avait livré aujourd’hui en ma main, et je n’ai pas voulu porter ma main sur l’oint du SEIGNEUR.

 23 The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’S anointed.

24 Et voici, comme ta vie aujourd’hui a bien été mise de côté à mes yeux, ainsi ma vie sera bien mise de côté aux yeux du SEIGNEUR, et qu’il me délivre de toute tribulation.

 24 And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.

25 Et Saul dit à David : Béni sois-tu, mon fils David tu feras de grandes choses et tu prévaudras. Alors David continua son chemin, et Saul retourna en son lieu.

 25 Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
