1 Et il arriva, après cela, que le roi des enfants d’Ammon mourut, et Hanun, son fils, régna à sa place.

 1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

2 Et David dit : Je montrerai de la bonté envers Hanun, le fils de Nahash, comme son père a fait preuve de bonté envers moi. Et David envoya ses serviteurs pour le consoler au sujet de son père ; et les serviteurs de David allèrent au pays des enfants d’Ammon.

 2 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

3 Et les princes des enfants d’Ammon dirent à Hanun, leur seigneur : Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t’envoie des consolateurs ? N’est-ce pas plutôt pour reconnaître la ville, et pour l’épier, et la détruire, que David t’a envoyé ses serviteurs vers toi ?

 3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

4 C’est pourquoi Hanun prit les serviteurs de David, et leur fit raser la moitié de la barbe, et couper la moitié de leurs vêtements jusqu’à leurs fesses ; puis il les renvoya.

 4 Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

5 Quand on le rapporta à David, il envoya à leur rencontre, parce que les hommes étaient dans une grande honte ; et le roi dit : Attendez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et alors vous reviendrez.

 5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

6 ¶ Et quand les enfants d’Ammon virent qu’ils étaient devenus puants devant David, les enfants d’Ammon envoyèrent louer les Syriens de Bethrehob et les Syriens de Zoba, vingt mille fantassins et mille hommes du roi de Maacah, et douze mille hommes de Ishtob.

 6 ¶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.

7 Et lorsque David l’apprit, il envoya Joab et toute l’armée d’hommes puissants.

 7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

8 Et les enfants d’Ammon sortirent, et se rangèrent en bataille à l’entrée de la porte ; et les Syriens de Zoba, et de Rehob, et ceux de Ishtob et de Maacah, étaient à part dans la campagne.

 8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

9 Quand Joab vit que le front de la bataille était contre lui devant et derrière, il choisit des hommes d’élite d’entre tout Israël, et les déploya contre les Syriens.

 9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

10 Et le reste du peuple, il livra en la main de Abishai, son frère, afin qu’il puisse les déployer contre les enfants d’Ammon.

 10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.

11 Et il dit : Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu me viendras alors en aide ; mais si les enfants d’Ammon sont plus forts que toi, j’irai alors t’aider.

 11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

12 Aie bon courage, et soyons des hommes pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu ; et que le SEIGNEUR fasse ce qui lui semble bon.

 12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.

13 Et Joab et le peuple qui était avec lui, s’approchèrent pour livrer bataille aux Syriens, et ils s’enfuirent devant lui.

 13 And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

14 Et quand les enfants d’Ammon virent que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, ils s’enfuirent aussi devant Abishai, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab s’en retourna de la poursuite des enfants d’Ammon, et vint à Jérusalem.

 14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

15 ¶ Et quand les Syriens virent qu’ils avaient été battus devant Israël ils se rassemblèrent.

 15 ¶ And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

16 Et Hadarezer envoya, et fit venir les Syriens qui étaient au-delà du fleuve, et ils vinrent à Helam ; et Shobach, le capitaine de l’armée de Hadarezer était devant eux.

 16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

17 Et quand cela fut rapporté à David, il assembla tout Israël, et passa le Jourdain, et vint à Helam. Et les Syriens se déployèrent contre David, et se battirent avec lui.

 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

18 Et les Syriens s’enfuirent devant Israël ; et David tua les hommes de sept cents chariots des Syriens et quarante mille cavaliers, et frappa Shobach le capitaine de leur armée, qui mourut là.

 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.

19 Et quand tous les rois qui étaient serviteurs d’Hadarezer virent qu’ils avaient été battus devant Israël, ils firent la paix avec Israël, et le servirent. Ainsi les Syriens craignirent d’apporter encore aide aux enfants d’Ammon.

 19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
