1 Et on rapporta à Joab : Voici, le roi pleure et mène deuil sur Absalom.

 1 And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.

2 Et la victoire ce jour-là fut tournée en deuil pour tout le peuple, car le peuple entendit dire ce jour-là combien le roi était affligé à cause de son fils.

 2 And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.

3 Et le peuple entra furtivement ce jour-là dans la ville, comme s’en irait à la dérobée un peuple honteux d’avoir fui dans la bataille.

 3 And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

4 Mais le roi couvrit son visage, et le roi criait à haute voix : Ô mon fils Absalom, ô Absalom, mon fils, mon fils !

 4 But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

5 Et Joab entra vers le roi dans la maison, et dit : Tu as aujourd’hui rendu honteuses les faces de tous tes serviteurs, qui ont, en ce jour sauvé ta vie, et la vie de tes fils et de tes filles, et la vie de tes femmes, et la vie de tes concubines.

 5 And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;

6 De ce que tu aimes tes ennemis, et tu hais tes amis. Car tu as montré aujourd’hui que tu n’as d’égard ni pour les princes, ni pour tes serviteurs ; car en ce jour je m’aperçois que, si Absalom avait vécu, et si nous étions tous morts aujourd’hui, alors cela te serait agréable.

 6 In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.

7 Maintenant donc, lève-toi, sors et parle avec aisance à tes serviteurs ; car je te jure par le SEIGNEUR, que si tu ne sors, il ne demeurera cette nuit pas un seul homme avec toi ; et ceci sera pire pour toi que tout le mal qui t’est arrivés depuis ta jeunesse jusqu’à maintenant.

 7 Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now.

8 Alors le roi se leva et s’assit à la porte. Et on rapporta à tout le peuple, en disant : Voici, le roi est assis à la porte. Et tout le peuple vint devant le roi car Israël s’était enfui, chacun dans sa tente.

 8 Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.

9 ¶ Et tout le peuple se querellait dans toutes les tribus d’Israël, disant : Le roi nous a sauvés de la main de nos ennemis, et il nous a délivrés de la main des Philistins ; et maintenant il s’est enfui du pays à cause d’Absalom.

 9 ¶ And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.

10 Et Absalom, que nous avions oint sur nous, est mort dans la bataille. Maintenant donc, pourquoi ne dites-vous pas un mot pour ramener le roi ?

 10 And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?

11 ¶ Et le roi David envoya à Zadok (Tsadok) et Abiathar, les prêtres, disant : Parlez aux anciens de Judah, disant : Pourquoi êtes-vous les derniers à ramener le roi dans sa maison ? Vu que les propos de tout Israël étaient parvenus jusqu’au roi dans sa maison.

 11 ¶ And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.

12 Vous êtes mes frères, vous êtes mes os et ma chair ; c’est pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à ramener le roi ?

 12 Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?

13 Et dites à Amasa : N’es-tu pas mon os et ma chair ? Que Dieu me fasse ainsi, et plus encore, si tu n’es capitaine de l’armée devant moi, pour toujours, à la place de Joab.

 13 And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.

14 Ainsi il inclina le cœur de tous les hommes de Judah, comme le cœur d’un seul homme ; si bien qu’ils envoyèrent cette parole au roi Reviens, toi et tous tes serviteurs.

 14 And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants.

15 Le roi s’en retourna donc et vint jusqu’au Jourdain. Et Judah vint à Gilgal (Guilgal) pour aller à la rencontre du roi, pour faire passer au roi le Jourdain.

 15 So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.

16 ¶ Et Shimei, le fils de Gera (Guera), un Benjamite, qui était de Bahurim, se hâta de descendre avec les hommes de Judah, à la rencontre du roi David.

 16 ¶ And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

17 Et il y avait avec lui mille hommes de Benjamin, ainsi que Ziba, le serviteur de la maison de Saul (Saül), et ses quinze fils et ses vingt serviteurs avec lui ; et ils passèrent le Jourdain devant le roi.

 17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.

18 Et il y avait un bac pour transporter la maisonnée du roi, et pour faire ce qu’il lui semblait bon. Alors Shimei, le fils de Gera (Guera), tomba devant le roi, comme il passait le Jourdain ;

 18 And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over Jordan;

19 Et il dit au roi : Que mon seigneur ne m’impute pas mon iniquité, et ne se souvienne pas de ce que ton serviteur fit perfidement le jour où mon seigneur, le roi, sortit de Jérusalem, en sorte que le roi le prenne à cœur.

 19 And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

20 Car moi, ton serviteur je sais que j’ai péché ; et voici, je suis venu aujourd’hui, le premier de toute la maison de Joseph, pour descendre au-devant de mon seigneur, le roi.

 20 For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

21 Mais Abishai, le fils de Zeruiah, répondit et dit : Shimei ne sera-t-il pas mis à mort à cause de cela, puisqu’il a maudit l’oint du SEIGNEUR ?

 21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’S anointed?

22 Et David dit : Qu’ai-je à faire avec vous, fils de Zeruiah, que vous soyez aujourd’hui mes adversaires ? Y aurait-il aujourd’hui quelqu’un à mettre à mort en Israël ? Car ne sais-je pas que je suis aujourd’hui roi sur Israël ?

 22 And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

23 C’est pourquoi le roi dit à Shimei : Tu ne mourras pas. Et le roi le lui jura.

 23 Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

24 ¶ Et Mephibosheth, le fils de Saul (Saül), descendit à la rencontre du roi ; et il n’avait ni soigné ses pieds, ni fait sa barbe, ni lavé ses habits, depuis que le roi s’en était allé jusqu’au jour où il revint en paix.

 24 ¶ And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.

25 Et il arriva, quand il vint à Jérusalem à la rencontre du roi, que le roi lui dit : Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu avec moi, Mephibosheth ?

 25 And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?

26 Et il répondit : Mon seigneur, ô roi, mon serviteur m’a trompé ; car ton serviteur avait dit : Je ferai seller un âne, afin que je puisse monter dessus, et j’irai vers le roi ; parce que ton serviteur est boiteux.

 26 And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame.

27 Et il a calomnié ton serviteur auprès de mon seigneur, le roi ; mais mon seigneur, le roi, est comme un ange de Dieu ; fais donc ce qui est bon à tes yeux.

 27 And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

28 Car toute la maison de mon père n’était que des hommes morts devant mon seigneur, le roi ; cependant tu as mis ton serviteur parmi ceux qui mangeaient à ta table. Quel droit ai-je donc pour me plaindre encore au roi ?

 28 For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king?

29 Et le roi lui dit : Pourquoi me parles-tu encore de tes affaires ? Je l’ai dit : Toi et Ziba, partagez les terres.

 29 And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land.

30 Et Mephibosheth dit au roi : Oui, qu’il prenne tout, d’autant que mon seigneur, le roi, est revenu en paix dans sa propre maison.

 30 And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.

31 ¶ Et Barzillai, le Gileadite, descendit de Rogelim, et passa le Jourdain avec le roi, pour le conduire au-delà du Jourdain.

 31 ¶ And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.

32 Or Barzillai était un homme très âgé, de quatre-vingts ans ; et il avait entretenu le roi pendant qu’il était à Mahanaim ; car c’était un homme de grands moyens.

 32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

33 Et le roi dit à Barzillai : Passe avec moi, et je te nourrirai chez moi, à Jérusalem.

 33 And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.

34 Mais Barzillai dit au roi : Combien me reste-t-il à vivre, pour que je monte avec le roi à Jérusalem ?

 34 And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?

35 Je suis aujourd’hui âgé de quatre-vingts ans ; et pourrais-je discerner entre le bon et le mal ? Ton serviteur peut-il savourer ce que je mange et ce que je bois ? Puis-je encore entendre la voix des chanteurs et des chanteuses ? Pourquoi donc ton serviteur serait-il encore à charge à mon seigneur, le roi ?

 35 I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

36 Ton serviteur ira un peu au-delà du Jourdain avec le roi ; et pourquoi le roi me donnerait-il une telle récompense ?

 36 Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

37 Que ton serviteur, je te prie, s’en retourne, afin que je puisse mourir dans ma ville, et que je sois enterré près du tombeau de mon père et de ma mère. Mais voici ton serviteur Chimham, qu’il passe avec mon seigneur, le roi ; et fais pour lui ce qui te semblera bon.

 37 Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.

38 Et le roi répondit : Chimham passera avec moi, et je ferai pour lui tout ce qui te semblera bon ; et tout ce que tu demanderas de moi, je te le ferai.

 38 And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.

39 Et tout le peuple passa le Jourdain. Et quand le roi eut passé, le roi embrassa Barzillai et le bénit ; et il s’en retourna en son lieu.

 39 And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

40 De là le roi alla à Gilgal (Guilgal), et Chimham passa avec lui, et tout le peuple de Judah et aussi la moitié du peuple d’Israël conduisirent le roi.

 40 Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.

41 ¶ Et voici, tous les hommes d’Israël vinrent vers le roi, et dirent au roi : Pourquoi nos frères, les hommes de Judah, t’ont-ils enlevé, et ont-ils fait passer le Jourdain, au roi, et à sa maisonnée, et à tous les hommes de David avec lui ?

 41 ¶ And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?

42 Et tous les hommes de Judah répondirent aux hommes d’Israël : Parce que le roi nous est plus proche parent ; pourquoi donc vous mettez-vous en colère pour cela ? Avons-nous mangé aux frais du roi ? Ou nous a-t-il donné des présents ?

 42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?

43 Et les hommes d’Israël répondirent aux hommes de Judah, et dirent : Nous avons dix parts au roi, et nous avons aussi plus de droit en David que vous ; pourquoi donc nous avez-vous méprisés, en sorte que notre avis n’aurait-il pas été le premier pour ramener notre roi ? Et les paroles des hommes de Judah furent plus véhémentes que les paroles des hommes d’Israël.

 43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
