1 Et de nouveau le courroux du SEIGNEUR s’embrasa contre Israël, et il incita David contre eux, à dire : Va, dénombre Israël et Judah.

 1 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

2 Et le roi dit à Joab, capitaine de l’armée, qui était avec lui : Va maintenant parcourir toutes les tribus d’Israël, depuis Dan jusqu’à Beersheba, et dénombre le peuple, afin que je puisse savoir le nombre du peuple.

 2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.

3 Et Joab dit au roi : Que le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu ajoute au peuple autant qu’ils sont, au centuple, et que les yeux de mon seigneur, le roi, puissent le voir. Mais pourquoi mon seigneur, le roi, prend-il plaisir à cela ?

 3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

4 Néanmoins la parole du roi prévalut sur Joab et sur les capitaines de l’armée. Et Joab et les capitaines de l’armée sortirent de la présence du roi pour dénombrer le peuple d’Israël.

 4 Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

5 ¶ Et ils passèrent le Jourdain, et campèrent à Aroer, du côté droit de la ville qui est au milieu de la rivière de Gad, et vers Jazer ;

 5 ¶ And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

6 Puis ils vinrent en Gilead (Guilead), et dans le pays de Tahtimhodshi, et ils vinrent à Danjaan, et aux environs de Sidon.

 6 Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Danjaan, and about to Zidon,

7 Et ils vinrent à la forteresse de Tyre (Tyr), et dans toutes les villes des Hivites et des Canaanites, et ils sortirent vers le Sud de Judah, savoir à Beersheba.

 7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba.

8 Ils parcoururent ainsi tout le pays, et revinrent à Jérusalem au bout de neuf mois et vingt jours.

 8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

9 Et Joab donna au roi le total du nombre du peuple, et il y avait en Israël huit cent mille hommes vaillants, qui tiraient l’épée, et les hommes de Judah étaient de cinq cent mille hommes.

 9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 ¶ Et le cœur de David le reprit après qu’il eut dénombré le peuple. Et David dit au SEIGNEUR : J’ai grandement péché en ce que j’ai fait ; et maintenant, je te supplie, ô SEIGNEUR, ôte l’iniquité de ton serviteur, car j’ai agi comme un insensé.

 10 ¶ And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

11 Et quand David se leva le matin, la parole du SEIGNEUR vint au prophète Gad, le voyant de David, en disant :

 11 For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,

12 Va et dis à David : Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : Je t’offre trois choses ; choisis l’une d’elles, afin que je puisse te la faire.

 12 Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

13 Gad vint donc vers David, et lui rapporta, et lui dit : Sept années de famine viendront -elles sur toi dans ton pays ? Ou fuiras-tu trois mois devant tes ennemis pendant qu’ils te poursuivent ? Ou y aura-t-il trois jours de pestilence dans ton pays ? Avise maintenant et vois quelle réponse je rapporterai à celui qui m’a envoyé.

 13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days’ pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

14 Et David dit à Gad : Je suis dans une grande détresse que nous tombions maintenant en la main du SEIGNEUR, car ses miséricordes sont grandes ; et que je ne tombe pas en la main de l’homme.

 14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

15 ¶ Ainsi le SEIGNEUR envoya la peste en Israël, depuis le matin jusqu’au temps assigné ; et il mourut dans le peuple, depuis Dan jusqu’à Beersheba, soixante-dix mille hommes.

 15 ¶ So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.

16 Et quand l’ange étendit sa main sur Jérusalem pour la détruire, le SEIGNEUR se repentit de ce mal, et dit à l’ange qui détruisait le peuple : C’est assez, retire maintenant ta main. Et l’ange du SEIGNEUR était près dans l’aire d’Araunah, le Jebusite (Jébusien).

 16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.

17 Et David, quand il vit l’ange qui frappait le peuple, parla au SEIGNEUR et dit : Voici, j’ai péché, et j’ai agi avec malveillance ; mais ces moutons qu’ont-ils fait ? Que ta main, je te prie, soit sur moi, et sur la maison de mon père.

 17 And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.

18 ¶ Et Gad vint vers David ce jour-là, et lui dit : Monte et dresse un autel au SEIGNEUR dans l’aire d’Araunah, le Jebusite (Jébusien).

 18 ¶ And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

19 Et David monta selon la parole de Gad, comme le SEIGNEUR l’avait commandé.

 19 And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded.

20 Et Araunah regarda, et vit le roi et ses serviteurs venant vers lui ; et Araunah sortit, et s’inclina devant le roi, son visage contre terre.

 20 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.

21 Et Araunah dit : Pourquoi mon seigneur, le roi, vient-il vers son serviteur ? Et David dit : Pour acheter de toi l’aire, afin de bâtir un autel au SEIGNEUR, pour que la plaie soit arrêtée parmi le peuple.

 21 And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

22 Et Araunah dit à David : Que mon seigneur, le roi, prenne et offre ce qui lui semble bon. Voici les bœufs sont pour le sacrifice consumé, et les instruments dans l’aire et autres instruments des bœufs comme bois.

 22 And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.

23 Araunah donna toutes ces choses au roi, comme un roi donne. Et Araunah dit au roi : Le SEIGNEUR, ton Dieu, veuille t’accepter.

 23 All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.

24 Et le roi dit à Araunah : Non ; mais je l’achèterai certainement de toi pour un prix, et je n’offrirai pas au SEIGNEUR, mon Dieu, des offrandes consumées qui ne me coûtent rien. Ainsi David acheta l’aire et les bœufs pour cinquante shekels d’argent.

 24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

25 Et David bâtit là un autel au SEIGNEUR, et offrit des offrandes consumées et des offrandes de paix. Ainsi le SEIGNEUR fut imploré pour le pays, et la plaie fut arrêtée en Israël.

 25 And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
