1 Alors le grand prêtre dit: Ces choses sont-elles ainsi?

 1 Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

2 Et il dit: Hommes, frères et pères, prêtez l’oreille: Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, lorsqu’il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu’il ne demeure à Charran,

 2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

3 Et il lui dit, Pars de ton pays et de ta parenté, et viens dans la terre que je te montrerai.

 3 And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

4 Alors il sortit de la terre des Chaldéens, et demeura à Charran: et de là, lorsque son père fut mort, il le déplaça dans cette terre où vous demeurez maintenant.

 4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

5 Et là il ne lui donna aucun patrimoine, non, pas même où poser son pied: cependant il lui promit qu’il la lui donnerait pour une possession, et à sa semence après lui, lorsqu’il n’avait pas encore d’enfant.

 5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

6 Et Dieu parla de cette manière, Que sa semence séjournerait dans une terre étrangère; et qu’ils les amèneraient en servitude, et les traiteraient mal pendant quatre cents ans.

 6 And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

7 Et je jugerai la nation à laquelle ils auront été asservis, dit Dieu: et après cela, ils sortiront, et me serviront en ce lieu.

 7 And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

8 Et il lui donna l’alliance de la circoncision: et ainsi Abraham engendra Isaac, et le circoncit le huitième jour; et Isaac engendra Jacob; et Jacob engendra les douze patriarches.

 8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

9 Et les patriarches, poussés par l’envie, vendirent Joseph pour l’Égypte: mais Dieu était avec lui,

 9 And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

10 Et le délivra de toutes ses afflictions, et lui donna faveur et sagesse à la vue de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte; et il le fit gouverneur sur l’Égypte et sur toute sa maison.

 10 And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

11 Or il vint une disette sur tout le pays d’Égypte et de Canaan, et une grande affliction: et nos pères ne trouvèrent pas de nourriture.

 11 Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

12 Mais quand Jacob entendit qu’il y avait du maïs en Égypte, il y envoya nos pères une première fois.

 12 But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

13 Et à la seconde fois, Joseph se fit connaître à ses frères; et la parenté de Joseph fut connue du Pharaon.

 13 And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

14 Alors Joseph envoya et appela son père Jacob auprès de lui, et toute sa parenté, soixante-quinze âmes.

 14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

15 Ainsi Jacob descendit en Égypte, et mourut, lui et nos pères,

 15 So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

16 Et ils furent transportés à Sichem, et placés dans le sépulcre qu’Abraham avait acheté pour une somme d’argent aux fils d’Emmor le père de Sichem.

 16 And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

17 Mais lorsque le temps de la promesse approcha, laquelle Dieu avait jurée à Abraham, le peuple s’accrut et se multiplia en Égypte,

 17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

18 Jusqu’à ce qu’un autre roi se lèva, qui n’avait pas connu Joseph.

 18 Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

19 Celui-ci agit avec ruse envers notre parenté, et traita mal nos pères, de sorte qu’ils abandonnèrent leurs jeunes enfants, pour qu’à la fin ils ne puissent pas vivre.

 19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

20 En ce temps-là, naquit Moïse, et il était extrêmement beau, et fut nourri trois mois dans la maison de son père:

 20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months:

21 Et lorsqu’il fut abandonné, la fille de Pharaon le prit, et le nourrit comme son propre fils.

 21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

22 Et Moïse fut instruit dans toute la sagesse des Égyptiens, et était puissant en paroles et en actions.

 22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

23 Et quand il eut quarante ans révolus, il vint dans son cœur de visiter ses frères, les enfants d’Israël.

 23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

24 Et voyant un d’eux souffrir à tort, il le défendit, et vengea celui qui était opprimé, et frappa l’Égyptien:

 24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

25 Car il supposait que ses frères auraient compris comment Dieu par sa main les délivrerait: mais ils ne comprirent pas.

 25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

26 Et le jour suivant il se montra à eux pendant qu’ils se battaient, et il aurait voulu les réconcilier, disant: Messieurs, vous êtes frères; pourquoi vous faites-vous tort l’un l’autre?

 26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

27 Mais celui qui faisait tort à son voisin le repoussa, disant, Qui t’a fait dirigeant et juge sur nous?

 27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

28 Veux-tu me tuer, comme tu as fait à l’Égyptien hier?

 28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

29 Alors à ce propos Moïse s’enfuit, et fut un étranger dans le pays de Madian, où il engendra deux fils.

 29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

30 Et lorsque quarante ans furent achevés, un ange du Seigneur lui apparut dans le désert du mont Sinaï, dans une flamme de feu dans un buisson.

 30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

31 Lorsque Moïse le vit, il s’interrogea à la vue: et comme il s’approchait pour la regarder, la voix du Seigneur vint à lui,

 31 When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

32 Disant, Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d’Abraham, et le Dieu d’Isaac, et le Dieu de Jacob. Alors Moïse trembla, et n’osait pas regarder.

 32 Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

33 Puis le Seigneur lui dit, Ôte les chaussures de tes pieds: car le lieu où tu te tiens est terre sainte.

 33 Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

34 J’ai vu, j’ai vu l’affliction de mon peuple qui est en Égypte, et j’ai entendu leur gémissement, et je suis descendu pour les délivrer. Et maintenant, viens, je t’enverrai en Égypte.

 34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

35 Ce Moïse qu’ils avaient refusé, disant, Qui t’a fait un dirigeant et un juge? celui-là même Dieu envoya pour être un dirigeant et un libérateur par la main de l’ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.

 35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

36 Il les fit sortir, après qu’il eut montré des prodiges et des signes dans le pays d’Égypte, et dans la mer Rouge, et dans le désert, durant quarante ans.

 36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

37 ¶ C’est ce Moïse qui dit aux enfants d’Israël, Le Seigneur votre Dieu vous suscitera un prophète d’entre vos frères, semblable à moi; lui, vous l’écouterez.

 37 ¶ This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

38 C’est lui qui était dans l’église dans le désert, avec l’ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï, et avec nos pères: qui reçut des oracles vivants pour nous les donner:

 38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

39 Auquel nos pères ne voulurent pas obéir, mais ils le repoussèrent et dans leur cœur retournèrent de nouveau en Égypte,

 39 To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

40 Disant à Aaron, Fais-nous des dieux qui aillent devant nous: car quant à ce Moïse, qui nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est advenu.

 40 Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

41 Et ils firent un veau en ces jours-là, et offrirent un sacrifice à l’idole, et se réjouirent des ouvrages de leurs propres mains.

 41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

42 Alors Dieu se détourna, et les abandonna à l’adoration de l’armée du ciel; comme il est écrit dans le livre des prophètes, Ô vous maison d’Israël, m’avez-vous offert des bêtes égorgées et des sacrifices durant les quarante années dans le désert?

 42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

43 Oui, vous avez porté le tabernacle de Moloch, et l’étoile de votre dieu Remphan, des figures que vous avez faites pour les adorer: et je vous transporterai au-delà de Babylone.

 43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

44 Nos pères avaient le tabernacle du témoignage dans le désert, comme il avait institué, en parlant à Moïse, qu’il le fasse selon le modèle qu’il avait vu.

 44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

45 Lequel aussi nos pères qui vinrent après l’amenèrent avec Jésus dans la possession des Gentils, que Dieu chassa de devant la face de nos pères, jusqu’aux jours de David;

 45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

46 Qui trouva faveur devant Dieu, et qui désira trouver un tabernacle pour le Dieu de Jacob.

 46 Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

47 Mais Salomon lui bâtit une maison.

 47 But Solomon built him an house.

48 Quoi qu’il en soit, le plus-Haut n’habite pas dans des temples faits avec des mains; comme dit le prophète,

 48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

49 Le ciel est mon trône, et la terre est mon marchepied: quelle maison me bâtirez-vous? dit le Seigneur: ou quel est le lieu de mon repos?

 49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

50 Ma main n’a-t-elle pas fait toutes ces choses?

 50 Hath not my hand made all these things?

51 ¶ Vous au cou raide et incirconcis de cœur et d’oreilles, vous résistez toujours à l’Esprit Saint: comme vos pères ont fait, vous faites aussi.

 51 ¶ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

52 Lequel des prophètes vos pères n’ont-ils pas persécuté? Et ils ont tué ceux qui avaient déclaré d’avance la venue du Seul Juste; duquel vous avez été maintenant les traîtres et les meurtriers:

 52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

53 Vous qui avez reçu la loi par la disposition des anges, et qui ne l’avez pas gardée.

 53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

54 ¶ Lorsqu’ils entendirent ces choses, ils furent frappés au cœur, et ils grincèrent leurs dents contre lui.

 54 ¶ When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

55 Mais lui, étant plein de l’Esprit Saint, regarda fermement au ciel, et vit la gloire de Dieu, et Jésus se tenant debout à la main droite de Dieu,

 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 Et dit: Voici, je vois les cieux ouverts, et le Fils de l’homme se tenant debout à la main droite de Dieu.

 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

57 Alors ils crièrent d’une voix retentissante, et bouchèrent leurs oreilles, et se précipitèrent sur lui d’un commun accord,

 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

58 Et le jetèrent hors de la ville, et le lapidèrent: et les témoins étendirent leurs effets aux pieds d’un jeune homme dont le nom était Saul.

 58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

59 Et ils lapidèrent Étienne, qui invoquait Dieu et disant: Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit.

 59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

60 Et il s’agenouilla, et cria d’une voix retentissante: Seigneur, ne mets pas ce péché à leur charge. Et lorsqu’il eut dit cela, il s’endormit.

 60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
