1 Il y avait à Césarée un certain homme appelé Corneille, un centurion de la bande appelée la bande italienne,

 1 There was a certain man in Cæsarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,

2 Un homme dévot et craignant Dieu avec toute sa maison, qui donnait beaucoup d’aumônes au peuple, et priait Dieu sans cesse.

 2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

3 Il vit clairement dans une vision vers la neuvième heure du jour un ange de Dieu venant à lui, et lui disant: Corneille.

 3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

4 Et lorsqu’il le regarda, il eut peur, et dit: Qu’est-ce, Seigneur? Et il lui dit: Tes prières et tes aumônes sont montées comme un mémorial devant Dieu.

 4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

5 Et maintenant envoie des hommes à Jaffa, et appelle un Simon, qui est surnommé Pierre:

 5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:

6 Il loge chez un Simon, un tanneur, dont la maison est au bord de la mer: il te dira ce que tu dois faire.

 6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.

7 Et quand l’ange qui parlait à Corneille fut parti, il appela deux serviteurs de sa maison et un soldat dévot de ceux qui le servaient continuellement;

 7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;

8 Et lorsqu’il leur eut déclaré toutes ces choses, il les envoya à Jaffa.

 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.

9 ¶ Le lendemain, comme ils poursuivaient leur chemin, et approchaient de la ville, Pierre monta sur le toit de la maison pour prier vers la sixième heure:

 9 ¶ On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

10 Et il commença à avoir très faim, et voulut manger: mais tandis qu’ils lui préparaient à manger il tomba en extase,

 10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

11 Et vit le ciel ouvert, et un certain vase descendant vers lui, semblable à une grande nappe liée aux quatre coins, et qui s’abaissait vers la terre:

 11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

12 Dans lequel il y avait toute sorte de quadrupèdes de la terre, et de bêtes sauvages, et de choses rampantes, et des rapaces.

 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

13 Et une voix vint à lui: Lève-toi, Pierre; tue et mange.

 13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

14 Mais Pierre dit: Pas ainsi, Seigneur; car je n’ai jamais mangé aucune chose ordinaire ou impure.

 14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

15 La voix lui parla encore pour la seconde fois, Ce que Dieu a épuré, ne l’appelle pas ordinaire.

 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

16 Cela se fit trois fois: et le vase fut reçu de nouveau dans le ciel.

 16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

17 Or tandis que Pierre était en lui-même dans le doute sur ce que voulait dire cette vision qu’il avait vue, voici, les hommes qui avaient été envoyés par Corneille, s’étaient informés de la maison de Simon, et se tenaient devant la porte,

 17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate,

18 Et appelèrent, et demandèrent si Simon, qui était surnommé Pierre, était logé là.

 18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.

19 ¶ Tandis que Pierre pensait à la vision, l’Esprit lui dit: Voici, trois hommes qui te cherchent.

 19 ¶ While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

20 Lève-toi donc, et descends, et va avec eux, sans aucun doute: car je les ai envoyés.

 20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.

21 Alors Pierre descendit vers les hommes qui lui avaient été envoyés par Corneille; et dit: Voici, je suis celui que vous cherchez: quelle est la cause pour laquelle vous êtes venus?

 21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?

22 Et ils dirent: Corneille, le centurion, un homme juste, et qui craint Dieu, et d’une bonne réputation parmi toute la nation des Juifs, a été averti de Dieu par un saint ange, de te faire venir à sa maison, et d’entendre des paroles de ta part.

 22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

23 Alors il les fit entrer, et les logea. Et le lendemain, Pierre s’en alla avec eux, et certains frères de Jaffa l’accompagnèrent.

 23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

24 Et le lendemain ils entrèrent à Césarée. Et Corneille les attendait, et avait appelé sa parenté et ses proches amis.

 24 And the morrow after they entered into Cæsarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.

25 Et comme Pierre entrait, Corneille vint à sa rencontre, et tomba à terre à ses pieds et l’adora.

 25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

26 Mais Pierre le releva, disant: Lève-toi; je suis moi-même aussi un homme.

 26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

27 Et comme il parlait avec lui, il entra, et trouva beaucoup de personnes qui étaient assemblées.

 27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.

28 Et il leur dit: Vous savez que c’est une chose défendue pour un homme qui est un Juif de tenir compagnie ou d’aller vers quelqu’un d’une autre nation; mais Dieu m’a montré que je ne devais appeler aucun homme ordinaire ou impur.

 28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

29 Par conséquent je suis venu vers vous sans objection, dès que vous m’avez envoyé chercher: Je demande donc dans quelle intention vous m’avez envoyé chercher?

 29 Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?

30 Et Corneille dit: Il y a quatre jours je jeûnais jusqu’à cette heure; et à la neuvième heure je priais dans ma maison, et, voici, un homme se tint devant moi dans une tenue éclatante,

 30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

31 Et dit: Corneille, ta prière est entendue, et tes aumônes sont venues en mémoire à la vue de Dieu.

 31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

32 Envoie donc à Jaffa, et appelle ici Simon, dont le surnom est Pierre; il est logé dans la maison d’un Simon, un tanneur, au bord de la mer: qui, lorsqu’il sera venu, il te parlera.

 32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.

33 J’ai donc immédiatement envoyé vers toi; et tu as bien fait de venir. Maintenant donc nous sommes tous ici présents devant Dieu, pour entendre toutes les choses que Dieu t’a commandées.

 33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

34 ¶ Alors Pierre ouvrit sa bouche, et dit: En vérité, je perçois que Dieu ne fait pas de différence entre les personnes:

 34 ¶ Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

35 Mais qu’en toute nation celui qui le craint, et qui effectue la droiture, est accepté par lui.

 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

36 La parole que Dieu a envoyée aux enfants d’Israël, prêchant la paix par Jésus Christ: (il est le Seigneur de tous):

 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)

37 Cette parole, dis-je, vous savez, laquelle a été publiée à travers toute la Judée, et commença depuis la Galilée, après le baptême que Jean a prêché;

 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judæa, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

38 Comment Dieu a oint Jésus de Nazareth de l’Esprit Saint et de pouvoir: qui allait de lieu en lieu faisant du bien, et guérissant tous ceux qui étaient opprimés par le diable; car Dieu était avec lui.

 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

39 Et nous sommes témoins de toutes les choses qu’il a faites, aussi bien dans le pays des Juifs qu’à Jérusalem; lequel ils ont tué et pendu à un arbre:

 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

40 Dieu le ressuscita le troisième jour, et l’a montré ouvertement;

 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;

41 Non pas à tout le peuple, mais aux témoins auparavant choisis de Dieu, c’est-à-dire à nous, qui avons mangé et bu avec lui après qu’il fut ressuscité d’entre les morts.

 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

42 Et il nous a commandé de prêcher au peuple, et de témoigner que c’est lui qui a été ordonné de Dieu pour être le Juge des vivants et des morts.

 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

43 De lui tous les prophètes témoignent, que par le moyen de son nom quiconque croit en lui recevra la rémission des péchés.

 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

44 ¶ Tandis que Pierre disait encore ces paroles, l’Esprit Saint tomba sur tous ceux qui entendaient la parole.

 44 ¶ While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45 Et ceux de la circoncision qui croyaient étaient étonnés, tous ceux qui étaient venus avec Pierre, parce que le don de l’Esprit Saint était aussi répandu sur les Gentils.

 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 Car ils les entendaient parler des langues, et magnifier Dieu. Alors Pierre répondit:

 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

47 Quelqu’un peut-il refuser l’eau, pour que ceux-ci ne soient pas baptisés, eux qui ont reçu l’Esprit Saint, aussi bien que nous?

 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

48 Et il commanda qu’ils soient baptisés dans le nom du Seigneur. Alors ils le prièrent de rester quelques jours.

 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
