1 Or lorsqu’ils eurent traversé Amphipolis et Apollonie, ils vinrent à Thessalonique, où il y avait une synagogue des Juifs:

 1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 Et Paul, comme il en avait l’habitude, alla vers eux, et pendant trois jours de sabbat il discuta avec eux des écritures,

 2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 Révélant et prouvant que Christ devait avoir souffert, et être ressuscité d’entre les morts; et que ce Jésus, que je vous prêche, est Christ.

 3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

4 Et quelques-uns d’entre eux crurent, et se joignirent à Paul et à Silas; et une grande multitude de Grecs dévots, et des femmes importantes, non en petit nombre.

 4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 ¶ Mais les Juifs qui ne croyaient pas, poussés par l’envie, prirent avec eux certains hommes vils de la plus basse espèce, et assemblèrent un groupe et mirent toute la ville en émeute, et assaillirent la maison de Jason, et cherchèrent à les faire sortir vers le peuple.

 5 ¶ But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6 Et lorsqu’ils ne les trouvèrent pas, ils traînèrent Jason et certains frères vers les dirigeants de la ville, en criant: Ceux-ci, qui ont tourné le monde sens dessus dessous sont aussi venus ici;

 6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 Lesquels Jason a reçus: et ceux-ci agissent tous contre les décrets de César, disant qu’il y a un autre roi, un Jésus.

 7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

8 Et ils agitèrent le peuple et les dirigeants de la ville, lorsqu’ils entendirent ces choses.

 8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

9 Et lorsqu’ils eurent reçu une caution de Jason et des autres, ils les laissèrent aller.

 9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

10 ¶ Et immédiatement les frères envoyèrent Paul et Silas de nuit, à Bérée: qui y arrivant allèrent à la synagogue des Juifs.

 10 ¶ And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 Ceux-ci étaient plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique, en ce qu’ils reçurent la parole avec toute vivacité du cerveau, et cherchaient dans les écritures quotidiennement, si si ces choses étaient ainsi.

 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Par conséquent beaucoup d’entre eux crurent; ainsi que des femmes honorables lesquelles étaient grecques, et des hommes, non en petit nombre.

 12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

13 Mais quand les Juifs de Thessalonique apprirent que la parole de Dieu était prêchée par Paul à Bérée, ils y vinrent aussi, et incitèrent le peuple.

 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

14 Et alors les frères envoyèrent immédiatement partir Paul, comme en direction de la mer: mais Silas et Timothée demeurèrent encore là.

 14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

15 Et ceux qui conduisaient Paul le menèrent jusqu’à Athènes: et ayant reçu un ordre pour que Silas et Timothée viennent au plus vite vers lui, ils partirent.

 15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 ¶ Or pendant que Paul les attendait à Athènes, son esprit s’agitait en lui, quand il vit la ville entièrement donnée à l’idolâtrie.

 16 ¶ Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 Par conséquent il discutait dans la synagogue avec les Juifs, et avec les personnes dévotes, et quotidiennement au marché avec ceux qu’il rencontrait.

 17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Alors certains philosophes des Épicuriens, et des stoïciens l’abordèrent. Et quelques-uns disaient: Que veut dire ce bavard? Quelques autres: Il semble mettre en avant des dieux étrangers: parce qu’il leur prêchait Jésus, et la résurrection.

 18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 Et ils le prirent et le menèrent à l’Aréopage, disant: Pouvons-nous connaître quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine dont tu parles?

 19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 Car tu apportes certaines choses étranges à nos oreilles: nous voudrions donc savoir ce que ces choses veulent dire.

 20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (Car tous les Athéniens et les étrangers qui étaient là ne passaient leur temps à rien d’autre qu’à dire ou à écouter quelque chose de nouveau).

 21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 ¶ Alors Paul se tint debout au milieu de la colline de Mars, et dit: Vous hommes d’Athènes, je perçois qu’en toutes choses, vous êtes trop superstitieux.

 22 ¶ Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 Car comme je passais et regardais vos dévotions, j’ai trouvé un autel avec cette inscription, AU DIEU INCONNU. Celui donc que vous adorez par ignorance, c’est lui que je vous déclare.

 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 Dieu qui a fait le monde et toutes les choses qui s’y trouvent, puisqu’il est le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, ne demeure pas dans des temples faits avec des mains;

 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Il n’est pas adoré non plus par les mains des hommes, comme s’il avait besoin de quelque chose, puisqu’il donne à tous la vie, et le souffle et toutes choses;

 25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 Et a fait d’un seul sang toutes les nations des hommes, pour demeurer sur toute la surface de la terre, et a déterminé d’avance les temps indiqués et les limites de leur habitation;

 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 Afin qu’ils cherchent le Seigneur, si peut-être ils pouvaient comme le toucher et le trouver, bien qu’il ne soit pas loin de chacun de nous:

 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 Car en lui nous vivons, et nous nous mouvons et avons notre existence; comme certains aussi de vos poètes ont dit: Car nous sommes aussi sa progéniture.

 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Alors puisque nous sommes la progéniture de Dieu, nous ne devons pas penser que la Déité soit semblable à de l’or, ou à de l’argent, ou à de la pierre, taillée par l’art et l’invention de l’homme.

 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

30 Et Dieu a fermé les yeux pendant ces temps d’ignorance; mais maintenant il commande à tous les hommes , de se repentir:

 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Parce qu’il a déterminé un jour, dans lequel il jugera le monde dans la droiture par cet homme qu’il a ordonné; duquel il a donné la certitude à tous les hommes, en ce qu’il l’a ressuscité d’entre les morts.

 31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 ¶ Et quand ils entendirent parler de la résurrection des morts, quelques-uns se moquèrent: et d’autres dirent: Nous t’entendrons encore sur ce sujet.

 32 ¶ And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

33 Ainsi Paul partit du milieu d’eux.

 33 So Paul departed from among them.

34 Quoi qu’il en soit certains hommes s’attachèrent à lui, et crurent: parmi lesquels était Denys, l’Aréopagite, et une femme nommée Damaris, et d’autres avec eux.

 34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
