1 Or il arriva, pendant qu’Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul ayant traversé les côtes supérieures vint à Éphèse: et ayant trouvé certains disciples,

 1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2 Il leur dit: Avez-vous reçu l’Esprit Saint depuis que vous avez cru? Et ils lui dirent: Nous n’avons pas même entendu dire qu’il y ait un Esprit Saint.

 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3 Et il leur dit: De quel baptême avez-vous donc été baptisés? Et ils dirent: Du baptême de Jean.

 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

4 Alors Paul dit: En vérité Jean a baptisé du baptême de la repentance, disant au peuple qu’ils devaient croire à celui qui devait venir après lui, c’est-à-dire, à Christ Jésus.

 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 Quand ils entendirent cela, ils furent baptisés dans le nom du Seigneur Jésus.

 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 Et lorsque Paul leur eut posé ses mains sur eux, l’Esprit Saint vint sur eux; et ils parlèrent des langues, et prophétisèrent.

 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

7 Et les hommes étaient environ douze en tout.

 7 And all the men were about twelve.

8 Et il alla dans la synagogue, et y parla avec hardiesse pendant trois mois, discutant et persuadant sur les choses concernant le royaume de Dieu.

 8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

9 Mais après que quelques-uns s’étaient endurcis, et ne croyaient pas, mais parlaient mal de ce chemin devant la multitude, il partit de là, et sépara les disciples, discutant tous les jours dans l’école d’un nommé Tyreannus.

 9 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

10 Et cela continua pendant deux ans; de sorte que tous ceux qui demeuraient en Asie, tant Juifs que Grecs, entendirent la parole du Seigneur Jésus.

 10 And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

11 Et Dieu effectuait des miracles particuliers par les mains de Paul:

 11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

12 De sorte qu’on amenait aux malades des mouchoirs ou des tabliers, qui avaient touché son corps, et les maux les quittaient, et les esprits mauvais sortaient d’eux.

 12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

13 ¶ Alors certains des juifs vagabonds, exorcistes, entreprirent d’invoquer le nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui avaient des esprits mauvais, disant: Nous vous adjurons par Jésus, que Paul prêche.

 13 ¶ Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

14 Et il y avait sept fils de Scévas, un Juif, et un des principaux prêtres, qui faisaient ainsi.

 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

15 Et l’esprit mauvais répondit, et dit: Je connais Jésus, et je connais Paul; mais qui êtes-vous?

 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

16 Et l’homme en qui était l’esprit mauvais sauta sur eux, et les maîtrisa, et l’emporta sur eux, de sorte qu’ils s’enfuirent de cette maison nus et blessés.

 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

17 Et cela fut connu de tous les Juifs et Grecs demeurant aussi à Éphèse; et la peur tomba sur eux tous, et le nom du Seigneur Jésus était magnifié.

 17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 Et beaucoup de ceux qui croyaient venaient, et confessaient et déclaraient leurs actions.

 18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

19 Beaucoup de ceux aussi qui employaient des pratiques curieuses apportèrent leurs livres et les brûlèrent devant tous les hommes: et ils en calculèrent le prix, et le trouvèrent de cinquante mille pièces d’argent.

 19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

20 Ainsi la parole de Dieu croissait puissamment, et prévalait.

 20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

21 ¶ Après que ces choses furent terminées, Paul se proposa en l’esprit, que lorsqu’il aurait traversé la Macédoine et l’Achaïe, d’aller à Jérusalem, disant: Après que j’aurai été là, je dois aussi voir Rome.

 21 ¶ After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

22 Ainsi il envoya en Macédoine deux de ceux qui le servaient, Timothée et Éraste; mais lui-même resta quelque temps en Asie.

 22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

23 Et au même moment il s’éleva une agitation, pas petite à propos du chemin.

 23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

24 Car un certain homme nommé Démétrius, un orfèvre, lequel faisait des écrins en argent de Diane, apportait un assez grand gain aux artisans;

 24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

25 Qu’il assembla ainsi que les ouvriers de la même occupation, et dit: Messieurs, vous savez que par ce métier nous avons notre fortune.

 25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

26 De plus vous voyez et entendez dire que non seulement à Éphèse, mais presque à travers toute l’Asie, ce Paul a persuadé et détourné beaucoup de personnes, disant qu’ils ne sont pas des dieux, ceux qui sont faits par des mains:

 26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

27 De sorte que non seulement notre métier est en danger d’être réduit à rien; mais aussi que le temple de la grande déesse Diane ne soit méprisé, et sa magnificence ne soit détruite, que toute l’Asie et le monde adorent.

 27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

28 Et quand ils entendirent ces dires, ils furent remplis de courroux, et s’écrièrent, disant: Grande est la Diane des Éphésiens.

 28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

29 Et la ville entière fut remplie de confusion: et ayant attrapé Gaïus et Aristarque, hommes de Macédoine, compagnons de voyage de Paul, ils se précipitèrent d’un commun accord dans le théâtre.

 29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

30 Et quand Paul voulut s’introduire vers le peuple, les disciples ne le lui permirent pas.

 30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

31 Et certains des principaux d’Asie, qui étaient ses amis, envoyèrent vers lui, désirant de lui qu’il ne s’aventure pas dans le théâtre.

 31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

32 Quelques-uns donc criaient une chose, et d’autres une autre: car l’assemblée était confuse; et la plupart ne savaient pas pourquoi ils étaient assemblés.

 32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

33 Et ils tirèrent de la multitude Alexandre, les Juifs le mettant en avant. Et Alexandre, fit signe de la main, et voulait présenter au peuple sa défense.

 33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.

34 Mais lorsqu’ils reconnurent qu’il était Juif, tous d’une voix durant environ deux heures crièrent: Grande est la Diane des Éphésiens.

 34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

35 Et lorsque le secrétaire de la ville eut apaisé le peuple, il dit: Vous, hommes d’Éphèse, quel homme y a-t-il qui ne sache comment la ville des Éphésiens est une adoratrice de la grande déesse Diane, et de l’image qui est tombée à terre depuis Jupiter?

 35 And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

36 Voyant donc que ces choses sont incontestables, vous devez rester calmes, et ne rien faire avec précipitation.

 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

37 Car vous avez amené ici ces hommes, lesquels ne sont ni pilleurs d’églises, ni non plus blasphémateurs de votre déesse.

 37 For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

38 C’est pourquoi si Démétrius, et les artisans qui sont avec lui, ont une plainte contre un homme quelconque, la cour est ouverte, et il y a des députés: qu’ils s’assignent l’un l’autre.

 38 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

39 Mais si vous avez une quelconque requête concernant d’autres affaires, cela sera déterminé dans une assemblée légale.

 39 But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

40 Car nous sommes en danger d’être accusés pour l’émeute d’aujourd’hui, n’ayant aucun motif pour lequel nous puissions rendre compte de ce rassemblement.

 40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.

41 Et quand il eut ainsi parlé, il congédia l’assemblée.

 41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
