1 Or lorsque Festus fut arrivé dans la province, il monta, trois jours après de Césarée à Jérusalem.

 1 Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Cæsarea to Jerusalem.

2 Alors le grand prêtre et le chef d’entre les Juifs l’informèrent contre Paul, et l’implorèrent,

 2 Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,

3 Et demandèrent une faveur contre lui, qu’il le fasse venir à Jérusalem, ayant dressé un guet-apens dans le chemin pour le tuer.

 3 And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.

4 Mais Festus répondit que Paul devait être gardé à Césarée, et que lui-même devait y aller bientôt.

 4 But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Cæsarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.

5 Donc, dit-il, que ceux parmi vous qui en sont capables, descendent avec moi, et accusent cet homme, s’il y a quelque immoralité en lui.

 5 Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.

6 Et après qu’il se fut attardé parmi eux plus de dix jours, il descendit vers Césarée; et le jour suivant, s’étant assis sur le siège de jugement, il commanda d’amener Paul.

 6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Cæsarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.

7 Et quand il fut venu, les Juifs qui étaient descendus de Jérusalem se tinrent tout autour, et portèrent contre Paul de nombreuses et affligeantes plaintes, qu’ils ne pouvaient prouver.

 7 And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.

8 Tandis qu’il répondait pour lui-même: Je n’ai offensé en rien du tout, ni contre la loi des Juifs, ni contre le temple, ni même contre César.

 8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cæsar, have I offended any thing at all.

9 Mais Festus, voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, répondit à Paul, et dit: Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem, et y être jugé sur ces choses devant moi?

 9 But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?

10 Alors Paul dit: Je me tiens devant le siège de jugement de César, où je dois être jugé: je n’ai fait aucun tort aux Juifs, comme tu le sais très bien.

 10 Then said Paul, I stand at Cæsar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.

11 Car si j’ai commis une offense ou quelque chose digne de mort, je ne refuse pas de mourir: mais s’il n’est rien des choses dont ceux-ci m’accusent, aucun homme ne peut me livrer à eux. J’en appelle à César.

 11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Cæsar.

12 Alors Festus, lorsqu’il eut conféré avec le conseil, répondit: En as-tu appelé à César? Tu iras vers César.

 12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Cæsar? unto Cæsar shalt thou go.

13 Et quelques jours après, le roi Agrippa et Bérénice vinrent à Césarée, pour saluer Festus.

 13 And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cæsarea to salute Festus.

14 Et après y être demeurés beaucoup de jours, Festus déclara au roi de la cause de Paul, disant: Il y a un certain homme laissé prisonnier par Félix:

 14 And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul’s cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:

15 Au sujet duquel, lorsque j’étais à Jérusalem, les principaux prêtres et les anciens des Juifs m’ont informé, désirant avoir un jugement contre lui.

 15 About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.

16 À qui je répondis, ce n’est pas l’usage des Romains de livrer un homme à la mort, avant que celui qui est accusé ait ses accusateurs face à face, et qu’il ait l’autorisation de répondre pour lui-même concernant le crime déposé contre lui.

 16 To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.

17 Par conséquent, lorsqu’ils sont venus ici, sans aucun délai le lendemain je me suis assis au siège de jugement, et j’ai commandé que l'homme soit amené.

 17 Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.

18 Lorsque les accusateurs se sont levés, ils n’amenèrent aucune accusation concernant les choses telles que je supposais:

 18 Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:

19 Mais ils avaient certaines questions contre lui à propos de leur propre superstition, et d’un certain Jésus qui était mort, que Paul affirmait être vivant.

 19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

20 Et parce que j’avais des doutes sur de telles sortes de questions, je lui demandai s’il voulait aller à Jérusalem, et y être jugé sur ces affaires.

 20 And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.

21 Mais lorsque Paul eut fait appel pour être réservé à l’audience d’Auguste, j’ai commandé qu’il soit gardé jusqu’à ce que je puisse l’envoyer à César.

 21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cæsar.

22 Alors Agrippa dit à Festus: Je voudrais moi-même aussi, entendre l’homme. Demain, dit-il, tu l’entendras.

 22 Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.

23 Et le lendemain, lorsque Agrippa et Bérénice furent venus en grande pompe, et furent entrés dans le lieu de l’audience, avec les capitaines en chef et les hommes importants de la ville, sur l’ordre de Festus, Paul fut amené.

 23 And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus’ commandment Paul was brought forth.

24 Et Festus dit: Roi Agrippa, et tous les hommes qui sont ici présents avec nous, vous voyez cet homme, au sujet duquel toute la multitude des Juifs a traité avec moi, tant à Jérusalem qu’ici aussi, s’écriant qu’il ne devait plus vivre.

 24 And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

25 Mais lorsque j’ai trouvé qu’il n’avait rien commis qui soit digne de mort, et que lui-même a fait appel à Auguste, j’ai décidé de l’envoyer.

 25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.

26 De qui je n’ai aucune chose certaine à écrire à mon seigneur. C’est pourquoi je l’ai amené devant vous, et particulièrement devant toi, Ô roi Agrippa, afin qu’après l’avoir examiné, je puisse avoir quelque chose à écrire.

 26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.

27 Car il me semble déraisonnable d’envoyer un prisonnier et en même temps ne pas signifier les crimes portés contre lui.

 27 For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.
