1 Et lorsqu’il fut déterminé que nous devions faire voile vers l’Italie, ils remirent Paul et certains autres prisonniers à un nommé Julius, un centurion de la bande d’Auguste.

 1 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band.

2 Et entrant dans un navire d’Adramytte, nous avons pris le large, ayant l’intention de faire voile près des côtes de l’Asie; un nommé Aristarque, un Macédonien de Thessalonique, était avec nous.

 2 And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

3 Et le jour suivant nous avons abordé à Sidon. Et Julius traita Paul courtoisement, et lui donna la liberté d’aller chez ses amis pour se revigorer.

 3 And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

4 Et lorsque de là nous eûmes pris le large, nous naviguâmes au-dessous de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires.

 4 And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

5 Et après que nous avons traversé la mer de Cilicie et de Pamphylie, nous sommes arrivés à Myra, ville de Lycie.

 5 And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

6 Et là le centurion trouva un navire d’Alexandrie, faisant voile pour l’Italie; et il nous mit dedans.

 6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.

7 Et après que nous ayons navigué lentement pendant beaucoup de jours, et à grand-peine nous sommes arrivés en face de Cnide, le vent ne nous permettant pas d’avancer, nous avons fait voile au-dessous de la Crète, en face de Salmone;

 7 And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;

8 Et la côtoyant difficilement, nous sommes arrivés dans un lieu appelé Beaux Ports; près duquel est la ville de Lasée.

 8 And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.

9 Or comme beaucoup de temps s’était écoulé, et comme la navigation était maintenant dangereuse, parce que le jeûne était déjà passé, Paul les admonesta,

 9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

10 Et leur dit: Messieurs, je perçois que ce voyage sera avec blessures et beaucoup de dommage, non seulement pour le chargement et le navire, mais aussi pour nos vies.

 10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

11 Néanmoins le centurion croyait plus le maître et le propriétaire du navire, que ces choses dont Paul avait parlé.

 11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

12 Et parce que le port n’était pas commode pour y hiverner, la plupart furent d’avis de partir aussi de là, afin que, s’il y avait moyen, ils puissent atteindre Phénix, et y hiverner; qui est un port de Crète, et situé vers le sud-ouest et le nord-ouest.

 12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

13 Et comme le vent du sud soufflait doucement, supposant qu’ils étaient venus à bout de leur but, partant de là, ils naviguèrent près de la Crète.

 13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.

14 Mais peu longtemps après, un vent impétueux, appelé Euroclydon, s’éleva contre celle-ci.

 14 But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.

15 Et quand le navire fut saisi, et ne pouvait plus résister au vent, nous l’avons laissé dériver.

 15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

16 Et filant au-dessous d’une certaine île, laquelle est appelée Clauda, nous avons eu beaucoup de peine à maîtriser le canot:

 16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:

17 Lequel lorsqu’ils l’eurent hissé, ils utilisèrent divers moyens, en ceinturant le navire; et, craignant de tomber sur des sables mouvants, ils baissèrent les voiles, et se laissèrent ainsi dériver.

 17 Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

18 Et comme nous étions extrêmement ballottés par la tempête, le jour suivant ils allégèrent le navire;

 18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

19 Et le troisième jour, nous avons jeté avec nos propres mains les agrès du navire.

 19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.

20 Et lorsque ni soleil, ni étoiles m’apparurent pendant beaucoup de jours, et qu’une tempête, pas petite, s’abattait sur nous, toute espérance que nous soyons sauvés nous fut ôté.

 20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

21 Mais après une longue abstinence, Paul se leva au milieu d’eux, et dit: Messieurs, vous auriez dû me prêter l’oreille, et ne pas lever l’ancre de Crète, et récolter ce dommage et cette perte.

 21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

22 Et maintenant je vous exhorte à avoir bon courage: car il n’y aura aucune perte de vie humaine parmi vous, sauf du navire.

 22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.

23 Car l’ange de Dieu, de qui je suis et que je sers, s’est tenu près de moi cette nuit,

 23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

24 Disant: Ne crains pas, Paul; tu dois être amené devant César: Et, voici, Dieu t’a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.

 24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Cæsar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

25 C’est pourquoi, messieurs, ayez bon courage: car je crois Dieu, qu’il en sera comme il m’a été dit.

 25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

26 Quoi qu’il en soit nous devons être jetés sur une certaine île.

 26 Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.

27 Mais quand la quatorzième nuit fut venue, comme nous étions secoués çà et là dans l’Adriatique, les matelots, vers minuit, jugèrent qu’ils approchaient de quelque pays;

 27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;

28 Et ils sondèrent et trouvèrent vingt brasses: et lorsqu’ils allèrent un peu plus loin, ils sondèrent de nouveau, et trouvèrent quinze brasses.

 28 And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.

29 Alors craignant que nous n’allions échouer sur des rochers, ils jetèrent quatre ancres de la poupe, et souhaitèrent la levée du jour.

 29 Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

30 Et comme les matelots étaient sur le point de s’échapper du navire, lorsqu’ils eurent descendu le canot à la mer, sous prétexte qu’ils voulaient jeter les ancres à l’avant du navire,

 30 And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,

31 Paul dit au centurion et aux soldats: À moins que ceux-ci ne demeurent dans le navire, vous ne pouvez être sauvés.

 31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

32 Alors les soldats coupèrent les cordes du canot, et le laissèrent tomber.

 32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

33 Et tandis que le jour venait, Paul les implora tous de prendre de la nourriture, disant: Aujourd’hui est le quatorzième jour que vous avez attendu et continué d’être à jeun, n’ayant rien pris.

 33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.

34 C’est pourquoi je vous prie de prendre quelque nourriture: car cela est pour votre santé: car il ne tombera pas un cheveu de la tête d’aucun de vous.

 34 Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.

35 Et quand il eut ainsi parlé, il prit du pain, et remercia Dieu en présence d’eux tous: et quand il l’eut rompu, il commença à manger.

 35 And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.

36 Alors ils prirent tous courage, et ils prirent aussi quelque nourriture.

 36 Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.

37 Et nous étions en tout, dans le navire, deux cent soixante-seize âmes.

 37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.

38 Et quand ils eurent mangé suffisamment, ils allégèrent le navire et jetèrent le blé à la mer.

 38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.

39 Et quand il fit jour, ils ne reconnaissaient pas le pays: mais ils découvrirent une certaine crique avec une plage, dans laquelle ils étaient enclins, si c’était possible à y pousser le navire.

 39 And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.

40 Et quand ils levèrent les ancres, ils se confièrent à la mer, et lâchèrent les attaches du gouvernail, et hissèrent la voile principale au vent, et se dirigèrent vers la plage.

 40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.

41 Et tombant sur un endroit où deux mers se rencontraient, ils laissèrent le navire s’échouer; et la proue s’enlisa vite, et resta immobilisée, mais la poupe se rompit par la violence des vagues.

 41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

42 Et l’avis des soldats fut de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelques-uns d’entre eux ne se sauvent à la nage et ne s’échappent.

 42 And the soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.

43 Mais le centurion, voulant sauver Paul, les empêcha d’exécuter leur intention; et commanda que ceux qui pouvaient nager se jettent les premiers à la mer, et gagnent la terre:

 43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:

44 Et le reste, les uns sur des planches, et d’autres sur des morceaux brisés du navire. Et ainsi il arriva qu’ils s’échappèrent tous sans dommage vers la terre.

 44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.
