1 Et lorsqu’ils se furent échappés, ils surent alors que l’île s’appelait Malte.

 1 And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.

2 Et le peuple barbare ne nous déploya pas une petite gentillesse: car ils allumèrent un feu, et reçurent chacun de nous, à cause de la pluie présente, et à cause du froid.

 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

3 Et lorsque Paul eut ramassé un fagot de brindilles, et les eut mises sur le feu, une vipère sortit de la chaleur, et s’attacha à sa main.

 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

4 Et quand les barbares virent la bête venimeuse qui pendait à sa main, ils se dirent entre eux: Aucun doute, cet homme est un meurtrier, lequel, bien qu’il ait échappé à la mer, cependant la vengeance ne permet pas qu’il vive.

 4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

5 Et il secoua la bête dans le feu, et ne ressentit aucun mal.

 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

6 Quoi qu’il en soit ils regardaient pour voir quand il enflerait, ou tomberait subitement mort: mais après qu’ils eurent regardé un long moment, et virent qu’il ne lui arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent d’avis, et dirent qu’il était un dieu.

 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

7 En ce même endroit se trouvaient les possessions de l’homme important de l’île, dont le nom était Publius; qui nous reçut, et nous logea courtoisement durant trois jours.

 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.

8 Et il arriva que le père de Publius était au lit, atteint d’une fièvre et d’une dysenterie: vers lequel Paul alla, et pria, et posa ses mains sur lui, et le guérit.

 8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

9 Ainsi lorsque cela fut fait, d’autres aussi, qui dans l’île avaient des maux, vinrent, et furent guéris:

 9 So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:

10 Qui aussi nous ont honorés avec beaucoup d’honneurs; et quand nous sommes partis, ils nous fournirent toutes les choses qui nous étaient nécessaires.

 10 Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

11 Et trois mois après, nous sommes partis sur un navire d’Alexandrie, qui avait hiverné dans l’île, dont l’enseigne était Castor et Pollux.

 11 And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.

12 Et ayant abordé à Syracuse, nous nous y sommes attardés trois jours.

 12 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.

13 Et de là, nous avons viré, et sommes arrivés à Rhegium: et après une journée, le vent du sud souffla, et nous sommes arrivés le lendemain à Pouzzoles:

 13 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

14 Où nous avons trouvé des frères, et ils désirèrent que nous restions avec eux sept jours: et ainsi nous sommes allés vers Rome.

 14 Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.

15 Et de là, lorsque les frères entendirent parler de nous, ils vinrent à notre rencontre, jusqu’au Forum d’Appius et aux Trois Tavernes: lesquels, lorsque Paul les vit, il remercia Dieu, et prit courage.

 15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

16 Et quand nous sommes arrivés à Rome, le centurion livra les prisonniers au capitaine de la garde: mais Paul eut la permission de demeurer seul avec un soldat qui le gardait.

 16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

17 Et il arriva, qu’après trois jours, Paul appela les chefs des Juifs: et quand ils furent réunis, il leur dit: Hommes et frères, quoique je n’aie rien commis contre le peuple, ou contre les coutumes de nos pères, cependant j’ai été livré prisonnier depuis Jérusalem aux mains des Romains.

 17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

18 Qui, lorsqu’ils m’eurent examiné, m’auraient relâché, parce qu’il n’y avait en moi aucun motif digne de mort.

 18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

19 Mais quand les Juifs parlèrent contre cela, je fus contraint d’en appeler à César; non que j’aie de quoi accuser ma nation.

 19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.

20 C’est pour ce motif donc que je vous ai appelés, pour vous voir, et parler avec vous: parce que c’est pour l’espérance d’Israël que je suis lié par cette chaîne.

 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

21 Et ils lui dirent: Nous n’avons ni reçu de lettres de Judée te concernant, ni aucun des frères qui sont venus, n’a montré ou dit du mal de toi.

 21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judæa concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.

22 Mais nous désirons entendre de toi ce que tu penses: car quant à cette secte, nous savons que partout on parle contre elle.

 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

23 Et lorsqu’ils lui eurent déterminé un jour, beaucoup vinrent à lui dans son logement; auxquels depuis le matin jusqu’au soir il exposait et attestait le royaume de Dieu, les persuadant concernant Jésus, aussi bien dans la loi de Moïse que dans les prophètes.

 23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

24 Et quelques-uns crurent les choses qu’il disait, et d’autres ne crurent pas.

 24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

25 Et comme ils n’étaient pas d’accord entre eux, ils partirent après que Paul leur eut dit une seule parole: L’Esprit Saint a bien parlé à nos pères par Ésaïe le prophète,

 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

26 Disant, Va vers ce peuple et dis, En entendant vous entendrez, et ne comprendrez pas; et en voyant, vous verrez, et ne percevrez pas:

 26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:

27 Car le cœur de ce peuple s’est engraissé, et leurs oreilles font la sourde oreille et ils ont fermé leurs yeux; de peur qu’ils ne voient avec leurs yeux, et qu’ils n’entendent avec leurs oreilles, et qu’ils ne comprennent avec leur cœur, et qu’ils ne se convertissent, et que je ne les guérisse.

 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

28 Sachez donc que le salut de Dieu est envoyé aux Gentils, et qu’ils l’entendront.

 28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

29 Et quand il eut dit ces paroles, les Juifs partirent, et eurent une grande discussion entre eux.

 29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

30 Et Paul demeura deux années entières dans sa propre maison qu’il avait louée, et il recevait tous ceux qui venaient le voir,

 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,

31 Prêchant le royaume de Dieu, et enseignant ces choses lesquelles concernent le Seigneur Jésus Christ, avec toute confiance aucun homme ne l’en empêchant.

 31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
